Kristin Scott-Biggs trimmed the wick on one of her candles she makes herself and sells from her shop, Gifts From a Virgo, in Boardman.

Business owner turns hobby into full-time job By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

In March 2012, Kristin Biggs’ started making candles as a way to earn extra money. Little did she know that her side-job would turn into a full-time business. Gifts From a Virgo is Biggs’ candle business where she creates and sells candles and soy melts. Biggs started making candles in her home while she was living in Columbus. Being a Youngstown-native, Biggs would come back on the weekends and post on her social media sites different candles and gift baskets she was making. She got so many orders and received so much support from her hometown, she decided to move back and open up her office in Boardman in 2015. “I always try to volunteer and donate to the city kids care because my city always supported me,” said Biggs. “I always stay rooted to my city because they always show so much love and support.” Biggs said she went through a lot of trial and error when she began making her candles. She was never a candle person and has wanted to give up so many

times, but continued to push through. She receives her inspiration from her customers who give her the motivation to continue. “My personality is naturally like this, I’m a friendly person,” said Biggs. Many people enjoy working with Biggs because of her personality and humbleness. She takes pride in being herself and running her business as a normal person who can relate to her customers all around the world. Biggs’ office at 6913 Market St. is where she makes her candles and melts, that double as skin moisturizers. Her office is filled with melting pots, wicks, jars and everything else she needs to make the 20 different scented creations. Biggs ships most of her products from orders she receives on her website, but invites people to come to her office and shop there. The top selling scent is the “Cake, Cake, Cake” which can fill an area with the smell of a baking cake. “I want people to know don’t get discouraged,” said Biggs. “Focus on you.” Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci To check out Biggs’ products or to learn more about her, visit Kristin Scott-Biggs is the owner of Gifts From a Virgo in Boardman and creates her own candles and soy melts. www.giftsfromavirgo.com.

Mooney senior collects coloring supplies for those in need

While some high school seniors take it easy on the way to graduation, Cardinal Mooney High School senior Nick Blasko has channeled his energies into making a positive impact on the lives of those around him. This January, Blasko independently developed Operation Color as a way to gather donations for local organizations. Inspired by his travels with his CMHS Service Class and the school’s tradition of community improvement, Blasko has collected nearly $3,000 in coloring supplies for donation to Akron Children’s Hospital and the Purple Cat workshop for adults with special needs. To accomplish this, he set up donation sites at several local businesses and neighborhoods collecting enough art supplies to keep the residents and patients he seeks to serve busy for many hours. Blasko developed Operation Color for five reasons: coloring promotes coordination, it’s a creative outlet, it helps you relax, it boosts self esteem and it’s all around fun. In addition to his work here, Blasko is a two time letter winner in swimming and soccer, he is president of the exclusive CMHS Hospitality Team, he emcees Mooney spirit rallies

and this year won the prestigious Victor Milonas Award for boys soccer. This award goes annually to the player that has demonstrated all of the qualities that Mooney Soccer stands for on and off the field. Blasko is also currently lobbying the Guinness World Record Organization for approval to gather the extended Mooney

family in an effort to break the record for most shirts folded by the most people in one minute (the current record stands at 1,000). Blasko then hopes to donate the shirts to local charity organizations such as the Beatitude House. Blasko hopes to continue his studies and service at the Ohio State University this fall.

One of the children went up to the rabbit, Olaf, during the Tales for Tots program at Mill Creek MetroParks on Feb. 10.

Children make a furry friend By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Children hopped their way to Bears Den Cabin on Feb. 10 to learn about Eastern Cottontails and meet a special guest. The program was open to children ages 2-3 years-old. Marilyn Williams, a naturalist at Ford Nature Center, helped lead the program and teach the children about Eastern Cottontail rabbits. As the children and their caregivers were coming in, they were given a name tag

shaped like a rabbit and a color page to color while they waited to start. When everyone got there, the children listened to a couple books about Eastern Cottontails before going outside. The snowy day allowed the children to go outside and look for rabbit tracks as they tried to look for rabbits hidden around the open yard. The children made their own tracks in the snow by hopping around like a rabbit. After the children found some of the hidden rabbits, they went back inside to

make their own rabbit craft to take home. They decorated a rabbit cut out of construction paper with paint, tissue paper and cotton balls to make the snow. At the end of the program, Olaf, a lionhead rabbit was brought out for the children to look at and pet. The children lined up ready to pet Olaf and feel how soft and fluffy he was. Many of the parents enjoy bringing their children to learn about different things in nature while being able to spend time with them.

call it ‘green pizza’,” said Nicolli. “Everyone loves it in my family. It’s really, really good.” Although Nicolli doesn’t cook or bake as much as she used to, she enjoys cooking and baking at Greenbriar when she gets the opportunity. Recently she made honey cookies for the staff and residents. When WFMJ arrived, Nicolli went step by step with Case and Lamendola to show them how she bakes her vanilla biscottis with walnuts. After mixing, baking and cutting the biscotti everyone had an opportunity to taste Nicolli’s biscotti. As an ad-

ditional surprise, Nicolli was invited to tour the WFMJ studio. She was also given a WFMJ mug and a WFMJ apron she can wear any time she cooks or bakes to remember this special moment. “I’ve been baking many years, since I was young,” said Nicolli. Nicolli grew up in Youngstown and would host family dinners, especially for the holidays. She learned how to cook from her family while she was growing up and hopes that her children and grandchildren will learn something for her to continue the tradition. Recipes from Nicolli have been passed down to her children and grandchildren so they will be able to continue the create the amazing meals and baked goods she provides for them.
