Paczki sale Although they look like jelly doughnuts, paczki are made from especially rich dough containing eggs, fats, sugar and sometimes milk. Traditionally, a small amount of spirits or grain alcohol is added to the dough before cooking; as it evaporates, it prevents the absorption of oil deep into the dough. Once again this year, PolishYoungstown will be bringing these delicious seasonal treats to town for your enjoyment. They will be ready for pick-up on Feb. 28 starting at 8 a.m. at the Kravitz Delis in Liberty and in the Poland library, and at 10 a.m. at Mill Creek Park’s Davis Center. Prices are $2 per paczki, $10 for six or $16 for a dozen.

Students at Poland Middle School received a lesson in learning about the dangers on the internet on Feb. 2. Three professionals came in to give a presentation to the seventh- and eighth-grade students. Mahoning County Prosecutor Anissa Modarelli, Mahoning County Juvenile Court Program Coordinator James DeLucia and Juvenile Probation Officer Sharon Fischer stopped in to cover a variety of topics including sexting, cyberbullying and the legal and emotional consequences. Parents were invited to attend the program along with their children. The school felt this was an important topic and wanted to make sure the students learned how to stay safe and the parents would learn how to help their children. “We wanted them to be informed for their safety. nitely a hot topic right now and we wanted to educate or students and keep them safe,” said Mary Jo Lukach, seventh- and eighth-grade counselor. The presenters showed the students real life examples of what happened to people who took part in the activities the students were learning about. All three presenters explained the consequences and how participating in an online activity, legal or not, can change some-
one’s life. “The cyber world the students are in, as adults we aren’t as familiar with that as they are, and it’s appropriate to have professionals to come and talk to our young people,” said Principal Mark Covell. With students having easy access to smart phones and other technology at an early age, Poland wanted to teach them how to use them appropriately. The presentation was also given to the students at Poland Seminary High School. At the end of the presentation, DeLucia answered aloud
some of the questions the students sent in prior to the assembly. Many of the questions were about cyber bullying and what happened to some of the people that were talked about in the presentation. “The cyber world and the social media world is growing daily. We can’t keep track of all the websites that pop up on a daily basis. So with the education and the kids talking to us, we can hopefully monitor and make sure our kids stay safe and they learn and protect themselves,” said school resource officer Steve Kent.

Children at the Geology Rocks program at Ford Nature Center on Feb. 4 looked at and grouped different kinds of rocks.
Children become young geologists By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children studied up on how rocks helped shape the Mahoning Valley during a Geology Rocks program at Ford Nature Center on Feb. 4. Geology Rocks: Engineering Our Earth was a program that gave children the opportunity to learn about various types of rocks, play games and make a craft to take home. The program started out by children picking out two rocks that were on display. The children sat at two ta-
bles and were then asked to use the rocks they picked out and put them into similar groups. The children then brought up a few rocks to a projector so everyone was able to see the details of the rocks on a larger screen. The children were told what kind of rocks they were looking at and where they could be found. After the children learned about the different kinds of rocks, they played a game. They stood in a circle and would have to do a special move to show a certain type of rock is formed
when the rock name was called aloud. This activity allowed the children to have fun while learning. To finish off class, the children made sand art. They could pick from a mini mason jar or a shaped container and a bracelet and fill it with different colored sand to create their own art. Ford Nature Center hosts a nature program like this once a month to educate children while allowing them to participate in fun and engaging activities.
Poland Rotary named Todd M. Bury, Rotarian of the Year on Jan. 27 at their Annual Night at the Races Fundraiser. Since he joined in 1997, Bury has served as Past President, was five-year chairman of the Chili Open, attended several mission trips, and opened his home to a foreign exchange student. Bury started Bury Financial Group, over 24 years ago, as a sophomore at Ohio University. He has successfully transitioned from being a one-man shop to a full-service financial planning firm. Chocolate factory creates sweet fun for everyone at Poland library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children entered the sweet world of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory on Feb. 11 at the Poland library. Jen Kuczek, youth librarian, turned a normal room into a wonderland full of chocolate and Willy Wonka themed activities. There was a chocolate fountain with marshmallows, pretzels and graham crackers
to dip in. Some of the games were a Mike Teevee Chocolate Puzzle, a chocolate factory with Play Doh and molds, Violet’s Blueberry Toss and many more games. There was a background and props to use for the guests to take a picture with. More than 100 guests showed up to the program eager to indulge in everything it had to offer. This is the first time the Poland library has hosted a Willy
Wonka event like this and Kuczek is happy with the turnout. Many of the children ran around trying to play all of the games that were open. The program wasn’t just fun for the younger children, but also for the older children and the adults who accompanied them. After a full morning and plenty of sweets, the children received a goody bag on the way out to bring the Chocolate Factory home with them.

Mooney senior collects coloring supplies OUR TOWN While some high school seniors take it easy on the way to graduation, Cardinal Mooney High School senior Nick Blasko has channeled his energies into making a positive impact on the lives of those around him. This January, Blasko independently developed Operation Color as a way to gather donations for local organizations. Inspired by his travels with his CMHS Service Class and the school’s tradition of community improvement, Blasko has collected nearly $3,000 in coloring supplies for donation to Akron Children’s Hospital and the Purple Cat workshop for adults with special needs. To accomplish this, he set up donation sites at several local businesses and neighborhoods collecting enough art supplies to keep the residents and patients he seeks to serve busy for many hours. Blasko developed Operation Color for five reasons: coloring promotes coordination, it’s a creative outlet, it helps you relax, it boosts self esteem and it’s all around fun. In addition to his work here,
