100th day Neighbors | Submitted
Neighbors serves the towns of Boardman, Austintown, Canfield and Poland and is published every Saturday in The Vindicator. It also is distributed free to nonsubscribers in those towns.
On Feb. 3, Austintown Elementary celebrated their 100th day of school. Teachers prepared various learning activities for students, incorporating the number 100 into their lesson. Students also got creative in their dress for the 100th day school. Many children dressed as if they were 100-years-old, suddenly needing canes or reading glasses, while others dressed up to integrate the number 100. The 100th day of school was celebrated to showcase how much the students have learned since the first day of school. In addition to the festivities, students were able to show off their costumes in a 100th day of school fashion show. Pictured are second-graders Saniyah Harris and Chase Moore dressed up for the 100th day of school.

History comes to life at fashion show By NATALIE WRIGHT nscott@vindy.com
American Girl has officially been a part of our lives for 30 years this year. Pleasant T. Rowland, former teacher and publisher of educational items, formed the company (then called the Pleasant Company) in 1986 and it distributed its first catalogue that same year. Since then, American Girl has been a part of many young girls’ lives. I grew up with American Girl. My sister and I loved to pore over the magazines and catalogues that would come WRIGHT to our house or school librar y once a month. We never owned one of those incredible dolls, but our mother made sure that we had access to all of the books we wanted and the tales of the American Girl characters would fill us with adventure, mystery, hijacks and a good dose of history. Our favorite at the time was Molly, who has since been discontinued, with Samantha coming in a close second. Now that I’m older, I have to confess that I have a soft spot for Kit, who wants to be a journalist when she grows up – I bet you can imagine why.
For the past three years, I have been lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to share my love for this incredible company with other young ladies and their American Girl dolls by being a hostess at the American Girl Fashion Show, this year taking place March 5 and 6. The Vindicator and WFMJ have been sponsors of this wonderful fundraising event in the Mahoning Valley for nearly a decade, which allowed them to help the Angels of Easter Seals in the past and more recently Akron Children’s Hospital. The event offers excited local young ladies the opportunity to walk the catwalk in fashions throughout the years while helping out a worthy cause. Other girls in the community have the chance to win an American Girl doll through an essay contest or by calling in to enter a drawing. Tickets will be on sale through March 2 at the cost of $30 each and can be purchased online at www.akronchildrens.org/ americangirlfashionshow. Ticket prices include a luncheon and admittance to the fashion show. For those of you planning to attend, look for me – and all of our other amazing hostesses – at the fashion show. Say “hi” to us and share some of your favorite American Girl stories with us. We can’t wait to see you there!

Austintown students learn ABC’s of bully prevention By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Julian “Zeus” McClurkin of the Harlem Globetrotters left the basketball court to make his way to Austintown Fitch High School on Jan. 25 to speak to the students of Austintown Intermediate School about the ABC’s of Bullying Prevention. “My teammates gave me the name Zeus because of my dunking ability. They say every time that I dunk the ball it sounds like thunder,” said McClurkin as he introduced himself to the students of AIS. McClurkin, a Columbus native, told the students about his life growing up and the story of how he became the person he is today. He explained to the students that bullying affected his life and the steps he took to overcome it. The ABC’s of Bullying Prevention stand for action, bravery and compassion. For each of the different letters, McClurkin would pick a student volunteer from the audience to join him on stage. When the student
joined McClurkin, they would tell him what action they would take against bullying, how they would be brave in a bullying situation and how they would show compassion for someone being bullied. The students were very eager and more than willing to participate in McClurkin’s lesson. One of the major issues that schools are currently dealing with is cyber bullying. McClurkin told the students about his “keep scrolling” method. “The way you really want to be brave is to keep scrolling. Don’t even acknowledge that when somebody is talking about someone else,” said McClurkin. At the end of McClurkin’s speech, he showed the students some of his basketball tricks, just he promised in the beginning of the assembly. The students watched in awe as McClurkin demonstrated his tricks. He also taught a few students and teachers some tricks that the Harlem Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci Globetrotters perform. helped teach one of the students a new basketball trick after “You never want to underesti- McClurkin his speech on Jan. 25. The students at Austintown Elementary School had the opportunity to experience the creative work of Richard Hight when he visited on Feb. 5 to present his “Art of Inspiration” program. Hight is a nationally recognized inspirational keynote speaker who uses the fine arts to creatively communicate positive, life changing messages. He says his mission is to help others use their gifts and talents. Hight’s presentation began with the creation of an illustration on an 8-foot canvas. The creation provided a foundation for his interactive presentation and discussion with the students and staff. AES was able to keep the creations to display to act as a reminder of the positive, empowering messages the students learned.

Last month, students at Austintown Fitch High School had the opportunity to sample new, low-sodium spices. A taste test was conducted during lunch periods for students to try the seasonings that would soon be available at the new flavor station. Students sampled cajun, sriracha, veggie and garden and herb blend seasonings on homemade whole grain pizza crust to see what they liked best. The seasonings are now available daily at the flavor station for no extra charge. Now students will able to spice up their meals whenever they wish. The flavor station is a precursor to the “Extreme Frito ‘Top and Go’ Throw Down,” which will utilize the spices in a challenge to create new menu items. All four high school principals will participate, funded by the Buckeye Healthy Schools Challenge grant, in a healthy cooking throw down to see who can create the best low-fat, whole grain frito pie recipe.

“Frozen” Valentine’s party warms hearts By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Austintown library hosted a “Frozen” themed Valentine’s Day party on Feb. 6. Librarian Ashley Potopovich worked on putting the event together with help from fellow librarian Lyndsay Cramer. Crafts were set up on several tables, along with various Valentine’s Day activities, that stayed in the “Frozen” movie theme. Music from the “Frozen” soundtrack also played in the background. The music was part of the musical hearts game that the children played by mainly dancing around the hearts. Another game was set up for children to throw a ball in a basket. There was also a station for the children to play and build with sand. Books and props about the movie, like a castle and an Olaf doll, were set up for the guests to check out and to take pictures next to. One of the things the children enjoyed was the chocolate fountain. Pretzels, marshmallows and strawberries were available for the guests to dip in the fountain to eat. Lenton set up two tunnels for the children to crawl through like groundhogs would do in their tunnels they dig. Several of the children returned to the tunnels to play in after the program was over. “The children were crawling through the tunnels,” said Lenton. “The groundhogs dig their holes in the ground, they dig tunnels and move about 700 pounds of dirt and rocks in a day.”

“This is my hat and everywhere I go, a school or a library, the little ones, they laugh when I wear it,” said Diomande as he put on his hat. Diomande said he wears his hat at every performance when he plays music and likes to get the audience involved. He asked the children what the
hat reminds them of and has received several answers, one being a cow while one boy told him a turkey. To get the audience more involved in the music, Diomande passed out shakers to different participants and they shook them while Diomande played his own instrument. There were also extra drums Diomande brought for t he guests who attended to play. He brought up two groups of sev-
eral people so they could learn to play on the drum while he played with them. Toward the end of the visit, Diomande taught those who wanted to learn how to dance a few African dance moves. After he taught the moves, he played the drum and had the guests dance to the music. The Austintown library was grateful to have such a special guest bring a different culture to their own library.
