Families travel to Oz at library celebration By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Boardman library hosted a program called “Wizard of Oz’s Valentine’s Celebration” on Feb. 8. PLYMC librarians Jennifer Kuczek and Ashley Young organized the event. They created a number of stations relating to the story and played music from the film’s soundtrack. The librarians created the “Wizard of Oz“ event for Valentine’s Day since the Tin Man in the story wished he had a heart. They organized a couple of Valentine’s Day stations with the Tin Man as the focus. One station had the children make Valentine’s Day cards for the Tin Man. They also had a game where children pinned the heart on the Tin Man, similar to pin the tail on the donkey. They had two other crafts at the event as well. Children colored and folded different sides of three cubes. When folded a nd stacked correct ly, t he cubes showed four characters from the story, Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man.

The other craft, “Melt the Wicked Witch,“ had the attendees pour water on clumps of baking soda that had been died green. The librarians also set up two other games. They created an area called “the Twister Zone,“ where t he children played twister, but the name references the tornado that sends Dorothy to Oz. The children played a ring toss game as well. They tossed rings onto a witch’s hat. The event also had a table of sweets, called the “Lollipop Guild,“ referencing the guild in the movie. The table had a number of sweets with names based on the Wizard of Oz, such Neighbors | Zack Shively as “lions, tiger and bears“ for animal crackers and Glinda’s Some of the stations at the Boardman library’s Wizard of Oz’s Valentine Celebration had crafts for the children to complete. Mooney gets new scoreboard By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Cardinal Mooney High School debuted the new Reese Family Scoreboards technology in their gymnasium at an open house on Jan. 9 and 10 as well as at the boys’ basketball game against Warren JFK on Jan. 9. ScoreVision provided the two jumbotrons, which have been installed on both sides of the court. The new scoreboards will allow their students to learn to work with new digital technologies and will give local businesses and donors a platform to advertise. “On behalf of all of Cardinal Mooney, I would like to saw that we are thankful for all the businesses and donors who have made this upgrade possible,“ said Mark Oles, president of the school. Oles said the scoreboards will not only provide advertisement for businesses and name recognition for donors, but they will also use the jumbotrons for any events in the gymnasium including basketball, volleyball, assemblies and guest speakers. The board have the dimensions of 14 by 9 feet and has an all LED surface, which makes the screen more durable. If something hits the screen, it may take out only a panel, as opposed to the full screen. The screens use Apple technology to broadcast and has a Cloud based storage system. Any content from the internet can be broadcasted onto the screen. Amelia McCumbers of ScoreVision said that the students could play movies on the screens for a movie night or a live broadcast. Anything that they can access on their connected iPad can be played on the jumbtrons using AirPlay technology.

ScoreVision installed the Reese Family Scorebards in Cardinal Mooney High School’s gymnasium.

Students in the Advanced Computer Applications and Creative Entrepreneurship classes will design content to be played during games on the Reese Family Scoreboards. They will create hype videos to play during pregame and pep rallies to get their students excited for the games. The boards also give the students a chance to make advertisements and commercials to play before games, half time and during time outs. ScoreVision has operated for two and half years and has brought video scoreboards to schools throughout the country. Their main focus is on high schools, but they have provided jumbotrons for colleges such as Oakland University. Their new boards at Cardinal Mooney marks the third school they have worked with in Ohio. If donors or businesses are interested in promoting on the scoreboards, they can contact the school at 330-788-5113 or visit their support webpage at http://www.support.cardinalmooney.com.

Across its network of 20 locations in northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania, Ankle & Foot collected new and nearly new shoes donated by employees, podiatrists, patients and friends from late November through early January. James and Audrey made a craft relating to a story Karen Saunders read earlier in the program called, “The Napping House.” The craft worked the children’s creative and motor skills as they had to color and cut out the pieces of paper.

Bedtime based lesson at library by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Boardman library offered a Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s event that included a story time, songs and craft on Jan. 3. The event used a bedtime theme for the activities done throughout the event. Boardman librarian Karen Saunders led the event. Saunders read three books to the children. The first story, “The Napping House“ by Audrey Wood, repeated many descriptive words for the children to learn. Saunders gave the children a baby doll for “Here is the Baby“ by Polly Kanevsky and Taeeun Yoo. Every time she said ‘baby,’ they passed the baby doll, working on their word identification skills. The final story, Ian Whybrow’s “The Noisy Way to Bed,“ included many animals. The children held up a picture of the animals when Saunders read the animal names. The children received other literacy lessons through songs. They sang “Brother John“ and another song called “Are You Sleepy?“ in the tune of the first song. They also sang “Rock-aBye Baby“ while holding either the baby doll or a stuffed animal. The event ended with a craft that worked the children’s creative and motor skills. The children had a worksheet relating to Wood’s “The Napping House“ where they placed the characters from the book in order. They col-

Neighbors wants spring sports news Rain, sun and warmer days are on the way. Spring athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.

The Boardman library’s Teen Advisory Board, or TAB, met in the library’s meeting room on Jan. 3. The group of teenagers plan teen related events at the library. They recently created a beginner’s Dungeons and Dragons group that met for the first time on Jan. 17.

Teens help library programming at TAB meeting by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Boardman library hosted its monthly Teen Advisory Board (TAB) meeting on Jan. 3. The board organizes different events for the Boardman librar y and helps t he library connect with teenagers. Boardman librarian Amy Burkard led the meeting. Fourteen teens came to the library for the event. The meeting began with the teenagers grabbing pizza and drinks. Burkhard talked to them about some of the happenings at the library, included a “Bookopoly” program where readers get a chance to win prizes for filling out a Monopoly board with the books they read from January until April. She also reminded the group about their new program while they ate. The program, titled “Apprentice’s Inn,“ is a new beginner’s Dungeons and Dragons club for teenagers in grades seven through twelve. The TAB created the event with the li-

brary. After they finished eating, they went around the room and all talked about the book they were reading at the time. Some said they read books for school, such as Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mocking Bird“ or F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.“ Others read what they wanted, such as “The Lightning Thief“ by Rick Riordan and “Reality Boy“ by A.S. King. They then wrote book letters, a summary of the book and whether or not they recommend it. Burkard uses these suggestions for the library’s featured young adult book section. She also asked the group to write down themes for next month’s section. After their book letters, they finished the meeting with a game. Every month, they play a different game. This month’s game was “Werewolf,” where they led a village that had a werewolf problem. The villagers had to find the wolves before the wolves knocked the villagers out of the game.
