Poland librarian Annette Ahrens presented on African American chef George Crum on Feb. 19 as a part of the PLYMC’s programming for Black History Month. Her presentation included details on Crum’s life and how he created the potato chip, a brief history of how the potato chip became a national product and the current process in mass producing potato chips.

The Poland library’s “Bet You Can’t Eat Just One!” program featured a blind taste test as well as a presentation. The taste test included five different types of potato chips. The attendees tasted the chips and ranked them.

Attendees learn about historical chef at library By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Poland library had a presentation in the library’s meeting room on Feb. 19 on chef George Crum, the inventor of the potato chip, as a part of the PLYMC’s programming for Black History Month. Poland librarian Annette Ahrens organized and presented the “Bet You Can’t Eat Just One!“ event. She spoke about how the potato chip became to be and gave the attendees a blind taste test. Ahrens said she was interested in doing the program because she found it interesting that Crum, an African-American man, had been a renowned chef with his own restaurant in the mid-1800s in New York state. According to Ahrens research, Crum worked at a restaurant in the 1850s in Saratoga Lake, New York. A customer ordered french fries and asked them to be brought back to Crum to be cut thinner. Eventually, Crum’s patience ran thin and he cut the potato as thin as he could, then cooked and salted them. Instead of disgust, the customer loved it. He continued to make the chips at the restaurant until

he eventually opened his own business, Crumb’s. Each table at his restaurant received a free basket of chips. At the time, the chips were called Saratoga chips, based on where they were created. Ahrens then explained the history of the chips that followed, such as a Clevelander’s business that first sold chips in stores and the Lay’s company that first sold chips nationally. She then played a clip from the Discovery Channel’s program “How It’s Made“ showing the process factories use to mass produce chips. Those in attendance then went to the back of the meeting room to partake in a taste test. Each person ate five different chips and ranked them. Ahrens provided five plain chips to get a fair test. The five chips were Lay’s brand, a generic brand of potato chip, Lay’s kettle cooked chips, Ruffles brand and Lay’s Wavy chips. The room voted that they enjoyed the crispy kettle cooked chips the best. After the testing, the attendees stayed in the room for several minutes and talked about the results and ate more potato chips. Some tried to guess the brands of the test before they were revealed.

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center hosted more than 50 high school robotics teams from 18 different schools during the VEX regional robotics competition on Feb. 3. Highs schools competing in the competition included Pickerington High School Central, Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, Perry High School, Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Firestone Engineering Club, Bio-Med Science Academy STEM School, NIHF STEM High School, Sout h Range Local Schools, Lowellville School, Shaker Heights High School, Valley Stem+me2 Academy, Austintown Fitch High School, Revere Local Schools, Choffin Career and Tech n ic a l Center, L au rel School, Litchfield CLC- Akron Public Schools, Trumbull Career and Technical Center and Poland Seminary High School Robotics. The competition robots were designed, built, programmed and operated solely by the students. Teams were randomly

paired and competed two-ontwo to stack cones and move mobile goals into one of several scoring zones. At the end of the qualification matches, the top eight teams chose two partners to go into the elimination round to compete, round robin style, in a best out of three competition. The teams then advanced to the semi-finals and eventually into the final round. The top two alliances as well as the excellence, design and skills winners all advanced to the state competition in March. Two tea ms f rom Pola nd Seminary High School Robotics participated in the competition. “In the VEX competitions, there is a new game, or task, every year. The students use the same parts to build a robot to be able to complete the different tasks each year. The students start building their robot as early as the beginning of the new school year. We receive the task at the end of the previous school year, so the teams end up working on their robot months in advance. Our team qualified to go to state last year. This year, for the first time, we

have two teams competing. We have more students involved in the program this year, which is great,” said team advisor Beth Queen. Queen also said her students participate in many competitions throughout the year to prepare for this state qualifier. “We go to many competitions t hroughout t he year, which gives the students the opportunity to test out their robots and they can make adjustments and change their design to make it better,” Queen said. The VEX competition is the biggest loca l qua lif ier and Queen likes the VEX style of competition. “I really like the VEX style of competition. Each team is paired with an alliance team when they get here. We do not know in advance who our alliance team will be. There are four matches and we get a new partner for each match. This promotes collaboration between teams and maximizes each of their strengths. It is also very much how engineering and robotics work in a professional setting, which is nice for the students to experience,” Queen said.

St. Christine School placed their classroom materials from the displaced classes in the gymnasium. The Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline students moved the materials into other rooms to get classes ready for school.

Rivals come together to help St. Christine By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

St. Christine School reopened on Jan. 25 with the help of students from Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline high schools. The kindergarten through eighth-grade school closed shortly after the new year due to a roofing issues, which led to a water leak and an asbestos problem. The school brought in Daniel A. Terreri and Sons to remove the asbestos, Boak and Sons to repair the roof and Valley Acoustics to make repairs on the school. The school passed an air quality test that allowed them to reopen. “We couldn’t take a chance on asbestos falling,“ said Walter Carpenter, principal of the school, “You have to think of the safety of the children, staff and parents.“ However, the leak and asbestos removal led to the displacement of classrooms. Many of the school’s resources and materials were placed in the gym during the cleanup. Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline high schools sent students to the school on Jan. 24 to help get the school ready for classes the next day. “It’s nice that we have two schools that are fierce competitors and are helping out,“ Carpenter said. He continued to say that seeing the two schools come together to help them is special. The problem caused four classrooms to be displaced and closed off a hallway. The stu-

St. Christine School had to shut down shortly after the start of 2018. The school hired companies to help repair the school and get it to working order. They passed an air quiality exam and quickly got the classrooms ready for school again. Former St. Christine students from Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline high schools helped the school get back in running order.

dents helped rearrange rooms to help become classrooms. For example, they changed a meeting room into a room for classes. The only class that remains without a classroom after the rearrangement is music education, which will be meeting in the gym until the repairs are finished. The students from Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney had gone to St. Christine’s in the past. Mark Vollmer, principal of Cardinal Mooney, said that he called down senior students that had previously gone to St. Christine to ask if they wanted to help out. “We wanted to help out in any way we could,“ said Vollmer, who helped alongside his students. He offered to place some

classrooms at Cardinal Mooney if the school could not reopen this year. He said he appreciates the school because many of the future Mooney students spend their early years at St. Christine. He also said Mooney is service oriented and often looks for ways to give back, such as helping a fellow school. The school opened as planned on the 25th with some adjustments made to classrooms. Carpenter received help from staff and parents as well as the Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline students. He thanked everyone involved for helping the school get through a difficult situation in such a timely manner.
