CHC students learn to ‘Start With Hello’ By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Canfield Local Schools students joined hundreds of other students across the United States during the week of Feb. 6, as they participated in Start With Hello Week. As part of Canfield Schools’ commitment to participate in The Sandy Hook Promise, C.H. Campbell Elementary School hosted a speaker, Brigid Ratcliffe, for Start With Hello week on Feb. 9. Start With Hello Week raises awareness and educates students and the community about the growing epidemic of social isolation in our schools and communities, and empowers young people to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness. Start With Hello teaches students the skills they need to reach out to and include those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation to help let every child know that they are part of the school community. C.H. Ca mpbel l Gu idance Counselor Diane Dankovich welcomed kindergarten through second-grade students

to the Stat with Hello assembly and welcomed Ratcliffe. “Today we are going to talk about how to be better friends with each other and how to stay good friends and how to stay safe. So now I am going to turn it over to Ms. Ratcliffe,” Dankovich said. “Good morning everyone. The Sandy Hook Promise is based on the belief that the youth of this country are able to prevent violence and mistreatment moving forward. Today we will learn how to create a closer, more connected and inclusive classroom, school and community,” Ratcliffe said. Ratcliffe listed the three steps the students can follow to create more connectedness. “The three steps you can follow are first, see someone alone; second, reach out and help and third, start with hello,” Ratcliffe said. Ratcliffe went on to explain to the students the signs and signals of isolation, including someone prefers to be alone, someone keeps to themselves, someone is anxious or uncomfortable around others, some-

one who is purposely left out by others both digitally and indirectly and the person seems removed. “Social isolation can be found in the classroom, on social media, on the bus, in the lunchroom, at events and on a sports team,” Ratcliffe told the students. Ratcliffe then moved to the second step, reach out and help, and explained that it can be hard to do that because it could make some students uncomfortable. She gave them several ideas on how to reach out and help someone. “To reach out and help someone, you could sit with someone who may feel alone, you could reach out on social media, you could invite someone to join you, you can give a simple gesture to someone and you could even leave a handwritten note,” Ratcliffe said. Ratcliffe also gave suggestions as to what the school could to make students feel included, such as ‘No One Eats Alone Day,’ ‘Get to Know Me Day’ and mixed grade socials. Ratcliffe moved onto step

three, Start With Hello, and gave the students some conversation starters to try out at their school. She encouraged them to ask questions and use ice breakers and to ask why and validate the person. “We need to push ourselves and even though we may feel nervous, we can reach out and help someone and also create happiness for ourselves,” Ratcliffe said. Ratcliffe suggested the students use such ice breakers as the Five W’s, which include asking who, what, when, where and why. She also suggested asking If You…, such as If you could do anything what would you do and why. She also said a good ice breaker is asking someone’s favorites, such as color, animal, holiday, food, musician, book, video game, class, sport, movie and TV show. Ratcliffe also gave the students the idea of sharing stories of where the students’ shoes have gone, such as vacations, parts of a city or country, different cities, states and countries or a beach, mountain or desert. Brigid Ratcliffe, of The Sandy Hook Promise, engaged C.H. Campbell Elementary School students in a conversation about Start With Hello Week during a visit to the school on Feb. 9.

HELLO

Continued from Page 3

Ratcliffe then asked for volunteers to test out the ice breakers, asking the students their favorite thing to do and would you rather be a dragon or unicorn. She then had the volunteers ask each other questions, such as would you rather be a cat or dog. Ratcliffe closed her presenta-

tion with a review of why the students should Start With Hello. “You should start with hello to create a more connected and inclusive school and community. You will also inspire others and create lifelong friendships. You will make a difference in someone’s life and help them feel accepted, included and valued. You can help stop someone from possibly hurting themselves or others,” Ratcliffe said. Ratcliffe encouraged the stu-

dents to get started today by creating posters, announcements, videos and other reminders to post around the school, by setting up inclusion and connectedness tables at events and lunch and start a connected club and foster Start With Hello. “Thank you so much for having me here today. You are so wonderful and I appreciate you. I hope you do Start with Hello,” Ratcliffe said.

Former student performs for current students By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Katy Collins received a warm welcome f rom her for mer school, St. Christine’s, on Jan. 31 when she came back to perform for the students and staff. Collins has always been into music and performing and was in choir during her time at school. She started performing with Easy Street Productions and participated in the productions that were put on at St. Christine’s. Collins worked on teaching herself guitar while she was in middle school and then began writing her own music when

she got to high school. While in college, Collins thought more about pursuing a career in music and once she graduated she moved to Nashville to work on making that happen. She went to conventions and began networking as she wrote her own music and trying to find her place. “I’m very lucky that I was able to create a career out of it,” said Collins. Coming back to St. Christine’s brought back good memories for Collins. She said how it was one of the most amazing audiences she has ever had and she was surprised at how enthusiastic the students were when she

performed. The students sang, clapped and danced along with Collins as she performed covers of popular songs and one of her original songs she wrote. Toward the end when the students got more into the performance, they started getting closer to the stage and eagerly danced to the music. “It feels awesome to be back at St. Christine’s. It will always have a place in my heart,” said Collins. Collins is currently living in Nashville, but enjoys coming home to see and spend time with her friends and family members.

Wednesday, March 15 11am-3pm 4475 Mahoning Ave. Austintown, OH Katy Collins and her family enjoyed the performance at St. Christine School on Jan. 31.

Ma r y Nicolli has cooked her way into the hearts of her friends and family and showed off her baking skills at the Commons at Greenbriar on Feb. 7. Nicolli was surprised by WFMJ’s Mike Case and Christa Lamendola on Feb. 6 as they entered the Commons and asked her if she would be interested in doing a special with them and baking her biscotti. Nicolli has been on TV before and was showcased making pizza. “I made pizza with escarole, we call it ‘green pizza’,” said Nicolli. “Everyone loves it in my

family. It’s really, really good.” Although Nicolli doesn’t cook or bake as much as she used to, she enjoys cooking and baking at Greenbriar when she gets the opportunity. Recently she made honey cookies for the staff and residents. When WFMJ arrived, Nicolli went step by step with Case and Lamendola to show them how she bakes her vanilla biscottis with walnuts. After mixing, baking and cutting the biscotti everyone had an opportunity to taste Nicolli’s biscotti. As an additional surprise, Nicolli was invited to tour the WFMJ studio. She was also given a WFMJ mug and a WFMJ apron she

can wear any time she cooks or bakes to remember this special moment. “I’ve been baking many years, since I was young,” said Nicolli. Nicolli grew up in Youngstown and would host family dinners, especially for the holidays. She learned how to cook from her family while she was growing up and hopes that her children and grandchildren will learn something for her to continue the tradition. Recipes from Nicolli have been passed down to her children and grandchildren so they will be able to continue the create the amazing meals and baked goods she provides Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci for them. Cummings signs with YSU By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Canfield High School senior football player Jake Cummings formally announced his intention to continue his athletic career at Youngstown State University at a letter of intent signing ceremony at the high school on Feb. 1. Cummings is a multi-sport athlete at Canfield, earning two varsity letters in basketball and three in football. Cummings was named to the All-AAC first team, gaining All-Northeast Ohio Special Mention. In addition, he was selected for the Northeast Ohio Big 22 team, rushing for more than 1,000 yards and scoring 21 touchdowns during his senior year. A 3.25 GPA student, Cummings plans on majoring in Chemical Engineering at Youngstown State. He is the son of Michael

and Barbara Cummings. Canfield High School Athletic Director Greg Cooper welcomed Mancini’s friends, classmates, teammates and family members to the signing. “It is an honor and a thrill for us to recognize Jake today. There was a time when we thought maybe he wouldn’t play anymore after a severe knee injury. But he worked hard and rehabbed like crazy to come back. Not all with that severe of an injury come back, but he did. He has been an integral part of our program. Thank you for your contributions as an athlete and as a student. Congratulations and we wish you well at YSU,” Cooper said. Cooper then introduced Canfield High School varsity football coach Mike Pavlansky. “This is a proud moment for the Canfield High School foot-

ball family. It takes a lot to get to this point, especially as a student. Jake took his studies seriously and his time in the classroom seriously. His dedication will help him succeed at YSU as an athlete. His leadership skills and his dedication are the type of characteristics you want in a football player,” Pavlansky said. Cummings then spoke to the large crowd. “First, I would like to thank my mom, dad and sister for their support. I would not be where I am today without them. I would also like to thank the entire coaching staff. They made me a better player and better person. Thanks also to my friends and teammates. I have had a blast hanging out with you. I will do my best to represent Canfield the right way at the next level,” Cummings said.

St. Charles students work together with alumni from Cardinal Mooney High School on a community service activity during Catholic Schools Week.

Catholic Schools Week celebrated with community service National Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. The week’s theme – “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service” – highlights the schools’ focus on faith development, academic excellence and dedication to community service. “Celebrating Our Community” was the daily theme as students at St. Charles elementary school spent the day working on a service project with alumni who now attend Cardinal

Mooney High School. Kindergarten and first-grade students were assisted by the students from Mooney while creating care notes to be distributed to several area nursing homes. A core aspect of Catholic education is learning the importance of serving others. Students taking part in service activities act upon the values and faith they acquire through their Catholic education. The students learn how to make the world a better place and they gain an appreciation for how they can continue to serve others throughout their lives.
