Austintown Middle School student battles cancer, students and staff raise support The Austintown Intermediate fifth-grade boys basketball team will take on the Intermediate staff in a game to raise money for fellow 10-year-old student Emily Orlaski, whose cancer has returned after a long battle. The event will be hosted in the Austintown Middle School gym on March 10 at 6 p.m. Orlaski’s journey began on Sept. 15 of last year when she stepped off her school bus complaining of a soreness in her hip. Her pain was the result of an unknown mass on one of her kidneys that was diagnosed as a stage four tumor. The tumor eventually travelled to her lungs.

Four days after stepping off the school bus, Orlaski was at The Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, where her left kidney was removed. Immediately following her surgery Orlaski began her eight month (to date) regimen of radiation and chemotherapy. Orlaski’s initial radiation treatments ended in December of last year, but her chemotherapy treatments continued. Orlaski kept up with her schoolwork at home by tutoring through Falcon Online. Last year, an event in her honor raised $12,000. Superintendent Vince Colaluca, Principal Jeff Swavel and Counselor Lisa Fitzgerald all shaved their

heads in an effort to raise money for Orlaski’s fight. Orlaski completed the fourth-grade despite an overwhelming year and returned this school year cancer free. Unfortunately, in November Orlaski’s family learned that her cancer had returned. She is currently undergoing radiation and will not be able to return to school for three months due to a weakened immune system. Austintown staff and students hope for another great turn out to support Orlaski’s fight. In addition to the game, a Chinese auction, half court contest and various performances from school groups will take place.

Un-Valentine’s event offers participants new way to celebrate By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown library hosted an Un-Valentine’s Day event on Feb. 10 for those who wanted a change from the usual Valentine’s Day activities. Austintown librarian, Lindsay Platt, worked on putting the event together for the tweens and teens who attended. She set up such asctivities as unfor-

tunate cookies, broken heart cookies, break the heart cornhole, match the celebrities to their exes—there was a bonus for whoever guessed all of Taylor Swift’s exes—and guess the unromantic book titles. There was also pizza, cookies and juice boxes to snack on while watching the movie “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.”

One of t he act iv it ies t he children seemed to like was the message board and photoboot h. T here were l it t le message bubbles in which participants could write their own message on with chalk a nd hold up in t he photobooth. They could also write a message on the photobooth frame. “We have a ‘Tell Me How You

Really Feel’ photobooth. They can write on there if they hate Valentine’s Day and how much they hate it,” said Platt. A ll of t he activ ities were meant for the children to have fun with, all while celebrating Valentine’s Day in a much different way. The Un-Valentine Day event was a clever way for teens to rebel against the spirit of Valentine’s Day.

Children who attended the LegoMy Library event at the Austintown library on Feb. 3 got to choose from buckets of Legos to make different creations.

Legos build fun times between children The Austintown library hosted its Lego My Library event on Feb. 3 for children to come and build whatever they wanted with Legos provided by the library. Twice a month children have the chance to spend time making Lego creations with their friends and family. The library has a Lego event on a Saturday and then again during a weekday. Austintown library sets out boxes filled with different kinds of Legos for the children to choose from. Librarian, Nik ki Puhalla, sat with the children and was available for any questions they may have had. “Children seem to really enjoy it here. Even if they have Legos at home, they still come here,” said Puhalla. The Lego My Library event is one of the more popular events the library hosts for the children in their tweens and teens. Books about Legos and different Lego creations were available for the guests to look at for ideas and also to check out to take home. The children have pictures taken of the Lego creations and then put them up all around the library for people to enjoy.

Peyton sat down at the table to work on making different Lego objects on Feb. 3. Lego My Library happens twice a month at the Austintown library.

Austintown’s after school program is what helped form the idea to make the Lego my Library event. Playing with Legos has been one of the more popular things the students like to do when they go to after school at the library. Having a separate

event for Legos allows children to come with their family that might not have the opportunity to come after school. “It’s something to do with your family. We have families that come here on Saturdays too, big families,” said Puhalla.

Recognition rally finishes Catholic School Week on high note By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The students and faculty at St. Christine School finished celebrating Catholic School Week by having a recognition rally on Feb. 5. Rallies at St. Christine usually consist of recognizing athletics, but this rally also recognized the academic groups and achievements as well. The rally started off with a performance by the fifth- and sixth-grade squad, followed by the seventh- and eighth-grade squad. After the cheerleaders were introduced and put on their performances, the academic groups were the first to be introduced. There were several academic groups that were recognized. Some of the groups were Honor Roll, student council, the spelling and geography bee winners, the National Junior Beta Club and many more. The athletic groups recognized were the football and flag football team, the volleyball team, cross country and track and the soccer team. A f ter w a rd, member s of the girls and boys basketball teams played a game of KnockOut. Players from the fifth- and

sixth-grade teams and seventh- and eighth-grade teams competed against each other until there was a winner from the four teams. Those winners went on to compete against each other for a final round and each winner received a small prize. Catholic School Week at St. Christine School consisted of various activities. There was an all school mass to kick off Catholic Schools Week. “A kid in each grade explained what they liked about coming to a Catholic school, especially our school, to put an emphasis Catholic Schools Week,” said Dana Vlock, a teacher at St. Christine. Other activities consisted of a Valentine’s Day for Vets, in which students made Valentines for Veterans, a movie and popcorn day for the students, a math career day consisting of a pilot, a pharmacist and a member of Easy Street Productions, a teacher appreciation lunch, a student appreciation day and a talent show, all leading up to the rally. “It gives the kids a break, and us a little bit of a break. We get to have fun with them so that’s nice,” said Vlock.

Feb. 21 Arrest: Police at the Mahoning County jail arrested 26-year-old Joseph Derrico of Youngstown. He was wanted on a Girard warrant. HUBBARD Feb. 18 Arrest: Authorities at the Mahoning County jail arrested Esteban E. Diaz of Hamilton Street, Youngstown. Magazzine of Pulaski, Pa., on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, underage consumption of alcohol and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, along with 19-year-old Mackenzie L. Brightshue of

We not only lost almost 40 lbs. in 40 days, better health has returned. My husband, age 67, was off his diabetes medicine in 10 days. My daughter & I are off our blood pressure medication and blood pressure is Normal. It was so exciting to get up every morning and see who lost the most weight and start off a brand new day with more energy, fat loss, and better health. Absolutely too good to be true. Many aches & pains are gone. We are anxious to start on our 2nd round of the program to reach our goal weight!! Thanks again. Rudy, Kathryn, Miriam, Kathy D.
