Dobbins Elementary students make abstract art By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Dobbins Elementary School invited representatives from the Butler Institute of American Art to the school on Feb. 23 to teach an art class. The Butler has a Good Neighbors program where they travel to schools each month to explain different forms of art. This month’s lesson focused on abstract paintings. The Good Neighbors prog ra m a l low s elementa r y students to learn about art
through an in depth series of lessons. The students take a pre-test on what they already know at the start of the program. Then, they take a field trip to the Butler, receive several lessons and take another field trip. At the end of the program, the students take a posttest to gage what they learned in the program. The abstract lesson was the sixth project that the students worked on with the Butler. They previously covered a portrait, still life, seascape, landscape and genre art.
The representatives from the Butler went over the elements of an abstract work of art. Then, the students searched a packet that the Butler gave them at the start of the program. They looked for a picture that matched the elements that the Butler representatives explained. They then pasted the picture on a page and wrote the definition of abstract works. The students proceeded to draw their own abstract art, which looks like a real object, but either simplifies or exaggerates the qualities of the ob-
ject. The students made a portrait of a person, but they used shapes to alter the way the face looked. The students explained how their works were abstract in their packet. After the lesson, the students packed away their art projects and prepared for dismissal. The students will be heading to the Butler Institute of American Art soon for their second field trip to the museum. The Good Neighbors program has worked with Dobbins Elementary for many years.

Short-term host family opportunities available Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull County families will have the opportunity to welcome a young person from Japan into their home for one month this year as part of an international exchange program being offered by the County OSU Extension, 4-H. Last year, six youth and one chaperone were hosted in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Statewide, host families are needed for 100 Japanese youngsters (aged 12-18) and their adult chaperones, who will visit Ohio from July 23 through Aug. 17. Host families provide the exchangees with room and board and a chance to experience daily life in America. Families are urged not to alter their daily routines or lifestyles during their visitor’s stay. Exchangees provide their own spending money and the sponsoring organization furnishes comprehensive medical insurance. The young Japanese visitors belong to the Labo Foundation, an organization which promotes the study of English culture and language in Japan. The other youth belong to organizations similar to 4-H in their country. Ohio 4-H has been conducting international exchange programs with these groups since 1949. Students will arrive on July 23 and leave on Aug. 18, delivered locally by OSU buses. The program allows children to live with an American family as a way to expand their English skills and learn from each other
with similar age children. Chaperones also live with adult families as a way to be available to the visitors and help with homesickness, health issues and language barriers. Each family chooses the activities and experiences they want for their new family guest, so each youth could have a unique adventure compared to his or her peers. All types of families are welcome to apply to become hosts, including urban, rural, singleparent, childless and non-4-H families. The only requirement is that for the Japanese month-
long exchange, hosts must have a family member of the same gender and approximate age of the exchangee, three meals a day and a separate bed for the visitor. Those interested should contact Gary Reel at 330-533-7712 (Mahoning Trumbull and Columbiana County) for an application form and more information about this and other 4-H international exchange programs. They may also obtain information and an application at the website www.ohio4h.org/ youth/international.

Teachers at Poland Union Elementary School notice a significant raise in awareness because of the Bridges math program. The program expanded the time dedicated to math to an hour each day, including a 20 minute lesson at the start of each day and another 40 minute math period during the day. “If we had continued to do what we have done in the past, we still would have been successful because of the quality of our community,“ said principal Michael Masucci. He continued to praise the children and teachers that come to Poland schools. He sa id t hat t he school
switched to Bridges because of the condensing of Poland schools to Union and Dobbins Elementary schools. The teachers came to Union Elementary with different styles of teaching and they and Masucci believed it would be beneficial to have all the teachers working together and doing similar things within the classroom. Starting this school year, the teachers all have a standards based instruction from the Bridges program. The teachers all teach math at the same time and try to stay on the same lesson. Second-grade teacher Suzanne James said that if one class falls behind, they will go slower to help the class catch up. Masucci said that the teachers can still let their style of teaching and personality shine through with the program, despite the

detailed plans Bridges supplies. The teachers all meet with each other to discuss their lessons and the program. They have also met with teachers from Canfield, Austintown and Struthers who also use Bridges. The teachers also visited Struthers schools during the school year to view the program after they had began implementing it in their classrooms. The school also works with math consultant Mike Klacik, an elementary supervisor with the Mahoning County Educational Service Center. The teachers have sat done with him and planned out future instruction and have had professional conversations. Masucci said the Bridges math differs from their traditional instruction in that the program uses learning groups and a lot of hands-on activities with manipulatives, physical objects used in instruction such as blocks or dice, The children make use of the manipulatives for instruction and to show their understanding of the material beyond pencil and paper. The children also break into learning groups where they learn on their own. James said her students work together to problem solve on a high level of thinking. The students learn from each other as opposed to a teacher instructing them for an hour. “[The students] are definitely more excited about math now,“ James said. The group workplaces have fun activities for the students, sometimes including games that the students enjoy playing. The combination of the number corner and the instruction has added to a deeper, more
in-depth understanding of mathematics while also delivering more information than the students previously received. James said the topics often “spiral” because they might have something come up during the number corner that will be more emphasized in a later lesson or vice versa. The new style of instruction has led to the school assessing progress differently as well. As opposed to giving a letter grade to a student, they give a detailed report of where students succeed and struggle. This allows parents, students and teachers to know where a child needs to improve. With change often comes apprehension. Masucci has commended his teachers for working closely with parents to ease those worries. He said he is proud of the dialogue that has opened between the families, teachers, students and staff. He also had an open house where he explained the Bridges program to parents in each grade level. James said that she also had some worries coming into the program. She initially had nervousness with letting secondgrade students work so much in groups and independently. However, she said the level thinking is evident. The students have a higher understanding of math concepts and can explain them well. She said the program is great because it has instruction for all learners. Masucci plans to get the families of the students involved in Bridges as well with math nights in the future. These math nights will show the families of the students how the Bridges instruction works and what the students do in class.

Seventh-grade Holy Family student, Daniella Patrone, won Best of Show in this year’s science fair. Charlotte Eskay, middle school science teacher, hosts the science fair for students in grades seven and eight each winter. Eskay has hosted this event every year for 20 years. A number of people from the community volunteered their time to come in and serve as judges. Some of the judges this year were business people, a Youngstown State University professor, engineers and people who just love science. Patrone’s project was titled, “Does color affect taste?” The purpose of her experiment was to determine if the color of a given food changes the way it tastes to a person. On winning the Best of Show, the project was judged with the highest number of points. Pictured above is Eskay with Patrone. Patrone is holding her Superior Award plaque and Best of Show plaque.
