Stitch a table topper workshop Karen Miles, a member of TQGIBT – That Quilt Guild I Belong To – is leading a workshop on the Calliope table runner at the March meeting. Included will be instructions on a specialty ruler called the Squedge. For interested stitchers who can join them early, the workshop will begin at 1 p.m. with instructions on cutting with the Squedge. There will be a break for dinner from 5-6 p.m. A brief business meeting will commence at 6:30 p.m., followed by more Calliope cutting and sewing. Karen says Batiks work well – four different half yard cuts and 3⁄4 yard of one focal print. Anyone wanting to participate should bring their rotary cutter, mat and ruler – and your sewing machine in case you have enough time to start sewing. The cost for the template and pattern is $26. Send an email to clare_neff@mac. com if you would like to join. If you have been thinking about joining a local guild, now is a great time to take that first step. TQGIBT welcomes quilters of all skill levels, members are more than willing to share their knowledge and stitching tips. TQGIBT meets at Fair Park in Canfield on the third Tuesday of each month, with some exceptions. TQGIBT is open to all quilters

in the Mahoning Valley, at all skill levels. For information on membership, contact president Helen Lewis at HMLrutgers@icloud.com or by calling 330-286-3966.

Local volunteers shave their heads to support childhood cancer research A local team of volunteers will host a fundraising event for The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research. The head-shaving event will take place at the Austintown location of O’Donald’s Irish Pub and Grill on March 12, where more than two dozen men, women and children are expected to shave their heads in solidarity and raise money to Conquer Childhood Cancers. Worldwide, a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research

funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle. Anyone interested in supporting the event by having their head shaved, serving as a head shaver or volunteering can register at http://www.stbaldricks. org/events/odonoldspub2016. Those wishing to support one of the head shavers can also visit this site to make monetary donations to the cause. The event organizers will be collecting donations for an auction to take place throughout the day. Any person or business interested in donating a basket or item to the auction

can contact Eric Broz at 330245-4719. The day-long event starts at noon with the 19th Annual St. Paddy’s 5k Fun Run/1K Walk, along with local and regional bands performing inside and in the parking lot of the Austintown O’Donald’s in a large, heated tent. Head-shaving will begin around 1 p.m. and go until 6 p.m. Music includes hometown rockers Hoss & The Juggernauts, The Super Babes, Jay Byrd, Leanne Binder and a dozen more artists gracing the stages. Last yea r’s event ra ised $12,151 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, bringing the fouryear total to $38,531 raised for pediatric cancer research.

CVMS Players sing about science By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The fifth- and sixth-grade Canfield Village Middle School Players presented “Eureka ! Let’s Hea r it for K ids w it h Brains!” in the Village Theatre for their fellow students on Feb. 8. The Players first presented the play for family and friends Feb. 5-6. CVMS Theatre Arts teacher and Drama Club advisor Kandace Cleland wrote the book and lyrics for the play and was also the artistic director, with Jodine Pilmer writing the music and serving as musical director for the production, which focused on science with an emphasis on young inventors, past and present. With 36 fifth- and sixth-graders cast in the production, several played various characters in the science classroom, as well as child inventors. “Sometimes it’s easier for kids than for adults to look at a problem from multiple angles because they have not yet learned about what will not

work. Their minds are still open to possibilities. They don’t care that ‘it’s never been done that way before.’ And when a kid has interests in academics, athletics and the fine arts, he or she may be able to draw on knowledge from all those interests to find a new solution to an old problem. Many thanks to the original 2010 cast of this show who helped me research the inventors highlighted in this musical, and to all the kids who believe science is worth singing about,” Cleland said. The production began with Scene 1: Kids in the Science Lab, with the entire cast on stage singing “Eureka! I’ll Find It.” The second song in the scene, “The Not-So-Famous Gang,” featured various cast members and the sixth-grade cast discussing inventors who invented important items, but are not well recognized. The scene ended with “Period 3 with Mr. Flannigan,” featuring several cast members thinking See THEATRE, Page 4

Canfield Local Schools ranked 16th in Ohio By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Canfield Local School District ranked 16th in Ohio after the State Report Card data was released on Feb. 25. The district earned a B based on the Performance Index, which is the main measurement for how much a student knows. According to the Ohio Department of Education Report Card, performance indicators “Answer the question - How many students passed the state test?” Canfield was able to earn a B in this measure with a score 104.555. Only six districts, less than 1 percent, in Ohio received an A in this area. Canfield Local School Superintendent Alex Geordan stressed

that the district obtained the high ranking, despite being one of the lowest-spending districts. “Ca n f ield L oca l Schools spends $8,000 per pupil to educate our students. There is only one district in the top 16 which spent less than us. I’d say our schools are getting a pretty good bang for their buck. Many school districts get lots of federal, state and local funding. Some spend in the $15,000-$17,000 range per pupil. Our local taxation is what is funding our schools. Because of that we are much more conservative and frugal with our spending. If not for our local tax dollars and the support of our community, we would not be able to do it,” said Geordan. Geordan is proud of the ranking and said it would not be

possible without the parents, students, school staff and the support of the Canfield community. “I am very proud of our high performance. We were able to accomplish this because our parents, community and school staff are behind our kids. They all want our kids to be well educated. We have a community and a dedicated student body who value education because the idea of valuing their education is coming from home. We, of course, have well-trained teachers here and we appreciate them, but we could not have accomplished being ranked 16th in the state without the community‘s support and the commitment of our student body,” Geordan said.

Canfield Players present ‘Drop Dead’ Canfield High School student s w i l l pre s ent “D rop Dead” by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore on March 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Regina Renyolds, Director, recently said, “This is one of the funniest, if not the funniest, play I have ever read or seen.” In the play, a cast of hasbeen actors pla n to rev ive their careers in ‘Drop Dead’

- a potboiler murder mystery directed by “Wonder Child of the Broadway Stage” Victor Le Pewe (a psychotic eye twitching megalomaniac). However, at the dress rehearsal the set falls, props break and the producer and an actor are murdered. During the opening night performance the murders continue. The remaining thespians must save the show and their careers, solve the mystery and stay alive for cur-

tain calls. Ca n f ield’s c a st i ncludes Zachery Bernat, Michael Stefanic, Emily Hofsess, Rosie Bresson, Zach Gierlach, Monica Bone, Mitchel l Ha l ley, Gregory Halley, Taegen Catlin and Alex Kluchar. Tickets can be purchased by calling the ticket line at 330702-7128 or they can be purchased at the door. Adult tickets are $8 and students and senior citizens are $5.
