Mill Creek clean-up to be April 22 With more than 40 locations in the Mill Creek MetroParks system needing attention, more groups are needed more than ever to lend a hand and participate in this year’s Earth Day Cleanup. Although more than 300 scouts and volunteers are expected to scour Mill Creek MetroParks in recognition of Earth Day to remove winter buildup of litter and debris, more help is needed. The cleanup is co-sponsored by the Whispering Pines District of the Great Trail Council, B.S.A. and Mill Creek MetroParks. The cleanup takes place on April 22 throughout Mill Creek MetroParks. Coordinators will stop by the Ford Nature Education Center (840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown, OH 44511) to pick up supplies before 9 a.m. and then meet with their groups at various locations and work until 12 p.m. This cleanup takes place rain or shine. In 34 years, more than 11,350 participants have volunteered more than 35,000 hours to clean various areas of the MetroParks. Just in the past 15 years, more than 2,200 bags of trash and 1,000 bags of recyclables along with numerous loose items such as tires, toys, furniture, pipes, wood crates, electronic items and even the proverbial kitchen sink, have been removed. Last year, there were fewer bags of trash but more bags of recyclables. As in years past, sponsorship of this event is in cooperation with the

Recycling Division of the Mahoning County Green Team. They will be providing these hardworking volunteers with garbage and recycling bags, gloves and grab-its, as well as pencils, certificates and car litter bags for each participant. This event is also in conjunction with the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup, the country’s largest community improvement program that kicks off in more than 20,000 communities each spring. This national program engages more than 5 million volunteers and participants who take action in their communities every year to create positive change and lasting impact. Details can be found out at https://www.kab.org/ our-partners. The MetroParks hosts the event by facilitating the organization and registration of groups, sites and supplies. Rural Metro Ambulance will be on-site in case of an emergency. Areas within this cleanup include Mill Creek Park and Mill Creek MetroParks Regional Facilities Yellow Creek Park and the MetroParks Farm. For more information about this year’s cleanup or to have your group, organization, church, school, family or individuals come out and lend a hand, call the Ford Nature Education Center at 330740-7107 or Mike Kupec, Mill Creek MetroParks Earth Day Cleanup Chairman for the Boy Scouts, at 330-519-3988.

CHC third-graders operate own business By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Third-grade students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School opened a Hot Chocolate Shoppe for a day Feb. 2. The Hot Chocolate Shoppe provided the students with real world hands-on experience as mini entrepreneurs. The students were responsible for inventorying supplies, applying for jobs, creating a product assembly line and sales. The students were assigned to a station on the assembly line which was set up in the classroom. Students performed their jobs at the stations, such as measuring powdered milk, sugar, creamer, cocoa, stirring the mixture, measuring the mixture and putting it in bags and making sure the bag was closed, stapling directions on the bag, checking the order forms and filling the orders and stapling the bag closed and decorating the bags. C.H. Campbell third-grade teacher K r ist in Ha r tshor n served as CEO of her classroom’s operation. “I am the CEO today and you are my human resources. Only

people who work hard and use their time wisely get paid. We want to see efficient workers, not lazy workers,” Hartshorn told the students. The Hot Chocolate Shoppe is part of a cross curricular unit on literacy, social studies and economics. “This gives our students an understanding of what a business looks like, and feels like in a tangible way to understand the curriculum,” said Hartshorn. Hartshorn told the students to save all the packaging from their supplies so they could figure out how much money they made at the Hot Chocolate Shoppe at the end of the day. “We are a profit sharing shop, not a salaried shop, so we need to know how much we made today,” Hartshorn told the students. Parent volunteers assisted by donating the supplies, working as supervisors on the assembly line and acting as customers. The students took orders from their families and then delivered the hot chocolate to their customers at home. Neighbors | Abby Slanker “The students sold the product, using paper money,” said A C.H. “Dracula” production scheduled for March 24-26 Canfield Players will present “Dracula” on March 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and March 26 at 2 p.m. in the Canfield High School auditorium, located at 100 Cardinal Drive in Canfield. General admission tickets are $9 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens, and can be purchased at the door. The box office will open at 6:30 p.m. each evening. For further information call 330-702-7128. “Dracula” is an adaptation, by Steven Dietz, from the novel by Bram Stoker. It retains all the suspense and seduction of Bram Stoker’s classic novel and is based on the classic legend of the Transylvanian vampire, Dracula. The lead characters work to piece together Dracula’s identity as they make a valiant attempt to stop him from taking new victims. Rich with both humor and horror, this play paints a wickedly theatrical picture of Stoker’s famous vampire. The tale begins with Jonathan Harker (Michael Stefanick), who is an English solicitor, visiting Count Dracula (Gregory Halley) to provide legal support for a real estate transaction. Harker soon realizes that he is Dracula’s prisoner. Soon Dracula is shown to be stalking Lucy Westenra (Emily Hofsess). As time passes she begins to suffer from episodes of sleepwalking, as witnessed by her friend Mina

Murray (Lauren Johnson), the fiancée of Harker. Lucy receives three marriage proposals, one from Dr. John Seward (Ben Lawson), who is treating an insane man, Renfield (Alex Kluchar), who wishes to consume insects, spiders, birds and rats to absorb their “life force”, and who is able to detect Dracula’s presence, thus supplying clues. When Lucy begins to waste away suspiciously, Seward consults his old teacher, Abraham Van Helsing (Mitchell Halley), who immediately determines the true cause of Lucy’s condition. After Dracula learns of the

plot against him, he attacks Mina and feeds Mina his own blood to control her. This curses Mina with vampirism. The protagonists pursue Dracula and kill him. Rounding out the cast are Vincent Prologo, Joey Bruno, Allyson Cooper, Taryn Rothbauer, Stephanie Scheckelhoff, Kaitlyn Burrows and Alanna Holden. Stage Managers are Grace Schuler, Rachel Daloise and Giannah Marasovich. Dracula is staged under the direction of Regina Olszewski Reynolds, assisted by Marlene Menaldi Strollo.

Guests create edible bouquets for Valentine’s Day By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Guests at the Fellows Riverside Gardens on Feb. 11 created a sweet treat to take home for Valentine’s Day. Cindy Velt led a class on cookie decorating and creating a bouquet out of those cookies. Velt picked up the hobby of baking and decorating cookies when she retired four years ago. “I started doing this as a hobby just for fun and I fell in love with it,” said Velt. She taught herself from watching YouTube videos and soon got requests from her friends and family to make some for them. Velt decorated more than 9,000

cookies in 2016. Velt has been teaching classes for a couple years and enjoys teaching and watching others learn and be creative. At Fellows, the guests decorated six Valentine’s Day shaped cookies with pink, red and white royal icing. When the cookies were done being decorated, there was a mason jar, tissue paper and other decorations to turn the jar into a holder. Once the holder was created, the cookies were put inside and they resembled a bouquet. “It’s very inexpensive to do and you just get better the more you do it,” said Velt. Cookie decorating is something people of all ages can en-

joy. A group of ladies who have been friends for 35 years said they loved the program and it was fun to try something different while doing it together. There were also mother-daughter and grandmother-grandaughter partners who used to program as a way to spend time together while making a delicious bouquet. “It’s something you can really enjoy. It takes a small amount of space at home, a little bit of equipment and a lot of time. It’s relaxing,” said Velt. Velt loves seeing the creativity people come up with when they decorate. If someone doesn’t like something they made, they’re going to eat it anyway.

Special guests get own night to shine By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Highway Tabernacle served as one of 380 churches who were selected to host Night to Shine sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation on Feb. 10. Guests with special needs ages 14 and up were invited to dress up and have a special night of their own to celebrate. People showed up in dresses, tuxedos, suits and several other outfits that made them feel nice and ready for the night. Night to Shine is a worldwide event that provides an

unforgettable prom night experience. Those who attended could get their hair done, make up done, nails done and their shoes shined to get them prepared for the dance. After getting pampered, guests enjoyed a dinner and got their picture taken. “We are so thrilled that we got to do this,” said Pastor Gary Gray. Before the dance started, the guests got to ride in a limo around the building. Once they were dropped off at the door of the gymnasium, the guests

walked on a red carpet as they entered the dance and got there picture taken as they were on the red carpet. “It’s a night where we can honor special needs guests and let them have a night where they can shine,” said Duane Corll. There were 112 special needs guests who attended the event and close to 100 volunteers who came to help out with whatever was needed. There were volunteers who came from other churches to help out and support the good cause. Busi nesses f rom a rou nd

the community donated their time, money or any other goods that would benefit the Night to Shine. “We’re speechless at this moment. It’s just an incredible moment to watch all these faces walk in with the smiles and the excitement,” said Tracie Corll. Once a church is chosen to host the Night to Shine, they are eligible to continue to host the event in the future. Highway Tabernacle hopes to continue the event and bring people from the community together to host a special moment.

The Sandwich Factory Girls Golf League is for 5-18 year-olds (if still in high school) who have an interest in participating in a league with their peers or on their own. The league takes place on Saturday mornings at the Mill Creek Par 3 Course. There is a $55 league fee, which must be made payable to the Sandwich Factory Girls Golf League and is due with the application. The green fee is $4 per week (pricing subject to change). All rounds are nine holes with a maximum eight shots per hole, maximum five shots to the green allowed and maximum three putts. Opening Day will be April 29 and June 17 is picture day, with

a golf scramble and picnic. June 24 is “Night Golf.” July 15 is closing day, with a scramble and closing ceremony banquet. All girls must arrive by 9:30 a.m. Pairings will be determined by age groups and/or abilities. All girls will tee off at the same time (shot-gun start), after the boys league concludes. It is imperative to arrive on time. No groups will tee off without adult supervision. Adults are permitted and highly encouraged to walk. Make-up days are allowed. Girls can pre-golf prior to the Saturday missed. An adult must keep score and sign the score card and then turn it in to the Club House. Spring athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@ vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.
