The Austintown library hosted a Build a Birdhouse event on April 17. Librarian Amelia Dale organized the event, which she hosted both at the Austintown library and the Michael Kusalaba library.

“We like to do a make your own event for each season,” Dale said. “This is my way to celebrate spring.” Dale used three different types of birdhouse kits for community members to construct their bird houses. All supplies were provided by the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

To kick off the event Dale showed community members how to use sandpaper to smooth the edges of the birdhouse pieces. After smoothing them down community members connected the pieces, using quick dry glue to put them together. Children and their families were then able to paint and decorate the bird houses.

“These are not necessarily for outdoor use,” Dale said. “They are more decorative.” Dale did say that if community members wanted to use them outdoors they would have to be covered in a clear coating of Modge Podge or something similar. For more upcoming library events, go to www.libraryvisit. org.

Austintown Elementary celebrates Autism Awareness Day

SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2019

OUR TOWN

briefs

By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Staff and students at Austintown Elementary School sported blue on April 2 for Autism Awareness Day. AES lighthouse teacher Holly Fay organized a lesson plan and informational video for teachers to celebrate the day. “We really aren’t that different we just learn in a different way and they see the world in a different way,” Fay said. “But if you can understand the way they see the world than you can see it’s not that different after all.” The lighthouse unit at AES is responsible for teaching students with autism at the school. Fay works with three paraprofessionals and can maintain six students in the unit at a time. To celebrate Autism Awareness Day, Fay created a book for teachers to reference that contained a mini lesson plan they could incorporate into their day. “The book describes the lighthouse unit and also students with autism, just to let them know what the lighthouse is as well as describing what they can expect from the student that they see everyday,” Fay said. She encouraged teachers to show the video to students and to teach them about autism, and what being autistic actually means.

Holly Fay, the teacher of the Lighthouse Unit at Austintown Elementary School, and her team of paraprofessionals posed on April 2 for Austism Awareness Day.

Fay also sent the information to board members and Superintendent Vince Colaluca. Additionally, she provided pamphlets with more information on autism to teachers in each “nest” at the school, so they can have more background information before they teach the lesson. Teachers were asked to donate $2 to wear jeans that day, with all the proceeds benefiting the lighthouse unit. Fay also created 130 blue puzzle piece pins that were distrib-

uted to all the staff members at the school. “They are very supportive,” Fay said. “Our message was just to bring the school together.” Fay said this is the first year the lighthouse unit has made a big push for Autism Awareness Day, but that it wouldn’t be the last. “I could already feel it when I walked in this morning because everyone has their pins on, and they are wearing blue,” Fay said. “It’s been great, it’s been a lot of fun.”

Check Out Hunger benefits Second Harvest Food Bank Customers can help provide food to those in need by tearing off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon at the cash register at select Giant Eagle locations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties through April 27. The donation will be added to their grocery bill. Non-perishable food items may also be placed in designated bins at the front of the stores. “In 2018, Giant Eagle stores in our community raised more than $114,000 through Check Out Hunger coupons. Giant Eagle’s efforts enabled the food bank to provide more than 684,000 meals last year. We simply could not do

what we do without the support of great friends like Giant Eagle,” said Michael Iberis, executive director, Second Harvest Food Bank. Harvest for Hunger is one of the largest annual, communitywide food and funds drives in the nation, and takes place in 21 counties in northeast Ohio during March and April. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, AkronCanton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds

raised and food collected in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will remain in local communities to feed friends and neighbors. Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, a member of Feeding America, provides food to those in need in the tricounty area through 160 programs provided by hunger-relief organizations, which include church pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs. Meditation class offered at library By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Librarian Hannah Matulek ran the event, saying that the best day to focus on relaxation is the beginning of the week. “Monday’s are the day’s you need it the most,” Matulek said. “It’s when the weight of the whole week is on you.” The class is called Stress Reduction Exercises and Meditation, and is offered once a month. Matulek said that the idea for the event was started when she

Community members attended the event, bringing pillows or mats to sit with on the floor. Matulek led participants in a guided meditation with light exercises designed to relax and rejuvenate the participants. “We all need to do something for ourselves and this is one way to do that,” Matulek said. Austintown Community Baseball hosts athletic shoe drive Austintown Community Baseball is hosting an athletic shoe drive fundraiser during the spring, summer and fall seasons to raise money for players’ families through a new campaign, the Bullpen Relief Fund. The baseball organization is creating this fund to benefit families in need and to give back to the community in other ways like donating to local charities. ACB will earn funds based on the total quantity of pairs of gently worn, used and new sneakers collected. GotSneakers, a social enterprise, will issue funds in compensation for the collected sneakers. Those funds will benefit all players and spectators at the ACB facilities. Anyone can help by simply donating gently worn, used and new sneakers and cleats at Libbee Field, located at 324 North Kimberly Road in Austintown, or the Stryffeler Indoor Batting Barn and the Clubhouse at Champ Park, located at 600 North Raccoon Road in Austintown during evening games. Michael Kusalaba library hosts Stamping with Cindy By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

The Michael Kusalaba library hosted the Stamping with Cindy monthly event on March 26. Cindy Mawhinney, a librarian and stamping expert, hosted the event. Mawhinney organized Easter themed crafts for participants to create during the event. “It’s easy and fun and I wanted to do this craft for Easter,” Mawhinney said. Participants created an Easter basket

out of paper, with stamp decorations, as well as an Easter card. Community members at the event were split into two groups, each working on one craft before switching back. Because of the popularity of the event community members have to sign up in advance. Mawhinney hosts Stamping with Cindy events at the Austintown and Michael Kusalaba libraries.
