Austintown students received recognition for their art creations at the Reflections art program ceremony on March 8 at Austintown Middle School. More than 60 students from Austintown Intermediate, Elementary and Middle schools participated in the PTA Reflections program by creating different artistic projects. The ceremony was to recognize the participants as well as the win-
ners. The theme this year for the National PTA Reflections program was “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Students could use any medium they wished to create an entry for the program and had about two months to do it. “The students are judged in their individual school, then they move onto the state competition. We have two winners this year at state competition,” said Mandy Maloney, organizer of the Reflections ceremony.
The categories the students could enter were visual arts, photography, film production and dance choreography. The judges for the program were Bob Connolly, Michelle Davis, Stephanie White, Audra Agler and Jennifer Houston - who is an art teacher for Austintown Local Schools. The fourth-grade principal from Austintown Intermediate School, Michael Zoccali, got on stage and spoke about the students and their work.
This year the ceremony took place at Austintown Elementary School in the evening, so all of the students could participate in the same ceremony and have their parents and families watch them. There were snacks and other baked goods available after the ceremony. Students’ projects were also put on display for the family and friends to see. The projects are kept on display at the Austintown schools throughout the school year.

Families enjoy egg-celent Easter Eggstravaganza By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Austintown Bounce hosted its second annual Easter Eggstravaganza party on March 19. Austintown Bounce partnered w ith First A merican Loans to put on an Easter party for the children and families of Austintown. The Easter Eggstravaganza consisted of 5,000 Easter eggs, several prizes to be raffled off and a visit from the Easter Bunny. “Every child that came in got two tickets each and we had a bunch of prizes. Everything from gift certificates to tickets, to pizza to stuffed animals,”
said Bruce Shepas, co-owner of Austintown Bounce. People starting lining up at 8 a.m. and waited until the doors opened at 9 a.m. to come in and enjoy the party. Children participated in an Easter egg hunt when the party started and then had the chance to play other games and jump on the inflatables after. Between 150 and 200 people attended the event. “We did this last year as well. This year we did 5,000 eggs, had over 60 prizes and all of them were either donations or our store bought them,” said Jessica Summers, the assistant manager at First American Loans. The eggs were filled with dif-
ferent small candies for the children to enjoy. First American Loans put together bags for the guests to take when they entered the building. Each bag was filled with flyers, balloons, candy and other small prizes. “The kids have a blast and our company, we love kids. I love having the little ones around,” said Summers. First American Loans and Austintown Bounce wish to continue their partnership for the Easter Eggstravaganza for the years to come. “I think it was pretty organized, it went pretty well,” said Shepas.

Au st i ntow n Fitch H ig h School juniors Wendy Liu and Morgan Craw ford recently had artwork selected from Region 11 to compete in the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Ex hibition. A lthough their work was not selected as one of the final 300, their art was selected in the first round to be sent to Columbus for State judging, which took place on March 12. The process of selecting artwork for the state exhibition begins on a regional level. The state is divided into 15 regional locations, with high school students in each region invited to enter work in that regional judging. The state judging
takes place in Columbus; the judges for this level of competition are chosen from all over the country and are generally professional artists, college level instructors, or both. From the 11,500 regional entries from the 15 regions, approximately 2,500 are selected to enter the state judging. State jurors then select 300 for the actual exhibition, with 25 of the 300 chosen to receive the Governor’s Award of Excellence. Scholarships are offered to seniors by more than 30 universities and colleges of art. The selection of students to be offered scholarships is left strictly up to those institutions who offer them.

Students compete to raise money for charities By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Austintown Middle School hosted its first Kiwanis Club Essay Contest assembly on March 16. Si x t h-g r ade st udent s at Austintown Middle School were asked the question, “If you had $50 to give to the local charity of your choice, which one would you choose to donate to and why?” The students wrote an essay in response to that question about a charity that they wanted to donate money to.
There were 218 essays submitted, which is more than half of the students in the sixth grade, who wanted to earn $50 for their local charity. The contest was sponsored by the Ausintown Kiwanis Club, the Associated School Employees Credit Union (ASECU) and Home Savings and Loan. Six students were selected as winners by a panel of several judges, including members of the Fitch Key Club and the Kiwanis committee. The six students were honored during the
assembly and they all had the opportunity to read their essays to several guests who attended the assembly. “Out of the 218 essays, 37 different organizations are included,” said Mariel Sallee, the Austintown Kiwanis President. Members from each of the charities represented in the winning essays attended the assembly. After each student read their winning essay, the charity representative met the student at the podium and were awarded a $50 check for their
charity. The charities included in the winning essays were Wounded Warriors, Joanie Abdu Breast Center, Open Arms Community Outreach, Relay for Life, American Diabetes Associations and the Alzheimer’s Association. After the winning essays and charities were acknowledged, there was a random drawing of 30 students who entered the essay contest. The 30 students chosen won a $5 gift card. “We hope to make it an annual event,” said Sallee.
