Canfield Dairy Queen hosts egg hunt on the green By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Hundreds of children, and their families, took advantage of the warm, sunny day to attend the Canfield Dairy Queen’s annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 15. With several thousand of plastic eggs and thousands of pieces of candy hidden in straw strewn around the green, the children, up to age 10, anxiously waited to pick up as much as they could to fill their Easter baskets, buckets and bags. The plastic eggs were filled with candy, coupons for Dairy Queen treats or raffle tickets, which qualified the lucky child for a chance to win one of the grand prize buckets filled with assorted toys and games and a coupon for a Dairy Queen item. Dairy Queen staffers also handed out raffle tickets to the adults in the crowd, to possibly win one of three prizes. To make it fair and to break up the large crowd, a section was set aside for children ages 4 and under. The other section was for children ages 5 and up. Pastor Jill Barton of Rush Church emceed the event, including welcoming everyone to the event, pumping the children up by doing egg hunt ‘calisthenics,’ starting the countdown and calling the winning numbers of

the raffle tickets. “We are gonna have a lot of fun today. Are you ready to egg hunt? Thank you, Canfield Dairy Queen, for sponsoring the egg hunt and thank you, Rush Church, for helping out today,” Barton said. Dairy Queen staffers and volunteers from Rush Church worked together to put on the annual event.
“We have 800 raffle tickets, 800 Dairy Queen coupons, several thousand eggs, tons of candy and 10 golden spoons the children can find to turn in for special prize. Rush Church, as always, has been a huge help. We thank them very much. This could not be done without them,” said Pamela Simmons, Canfield Dairy Queen staff member in charge of marketing.
After all the eggs and candy were picked up, everyone crowded around with their raffle tickets in hand to learn if they had won a Dairy Queen prize. Prior to the egg hunt, attendees could have some fun playing games and activities provided by Rush Church. The Cardinal Joint Fire District also sent two trucks for the kids to check out before the egg hunt.

Canfield City to have town hall meeting on May 4 Canfield City Town Hall will host a town hall meeting on May 4 at 6:30-8 p.m. at the MCCTC Joyce Brooks Center, located at 7300 N. Palmyra Road in Canfield. Canfield city families and friends are encouraged to come to the meeting to celebrate Canfield and discuss the future of the city. There will be recognition and awards of accomplishments, as well as concerns and plans for the future. A question and answer with City Council and city staff will
also be offered. “As you may know, Canfield is one of the safest cities in the Mahoning Valley, in Ohio and in the U.S. Recent cuts in state funding and other revenue reductions placed us in jeopardy,” Mayor Bernie Kosar wrote in a recent email regarding the meeting to Canfield Neighbors staff. “Citizens approved a police levy in 2016 to close the financial Revenue gap caused by the reductions. Levy revenue will not be available until 2018; 2017 will be a lean year for our
city. We are dedicated to keeping Canfield safe for all, especially our most vulnerable: our children and seniors.” Kosar expressed the importance of all city residents attending the May meeting who can attend. “Please attend our May Town Hall,” he wrote. “It is a critically important meeting. Our city is financially challenged and must look for ways to increase revenue without increasing taxes. The decisions we make now will affect us for years to come.”

Balloon launch kicks-off March for Meals By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County teamed with several Youngstown State University student-athletes to participate in the second annual balloon launch on March 20 at the WATTS Center. More than 20 student-athletes volunteered their time to celebrate the March for Meals program with the volunteers from Meals on Wheels. This is the second year that YSU student-athletes have collaborated with Meals on Wheels and the number of students who showed up this year compared to last year has doubled. Linda Jenk ins, Mea ls on Wheels Director, said how it was amazing seeing how supportive everyone at the launch was of the program. This is the 15th annual March for Meals which is a month-long, nationwide celebration of Meals on Wheels. “If it’s one or 100 it’s just awesome to think someone was so kind to give up their time,” said Jenkins. Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County gets credit for the amount of people who attend their events and show off the Meals on Wheels March for Meals logo and get funding for the participation. This year, the balloons Meals on Wheels provided were biodegradable so when they were released into t he air, t hey wouldn’t harm the environment when they came back to the ground. The volunteers and student-athletes held the balloons and March for Meals signs for a picture inside the WATTS Center, then went outside to release the balloons. “I didn’t expect this many students, but the more the merrier. And it’s for a worthy cause,” said Jenkins. Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County is self-sufficient and runs off grants and donations, not federal funding. The volunteers will continue to deliver meals to the customers and prices will remain the same. For more information on how to contribute to March for Meals, visit www.MarchForMeals.com.

First-grade students at Hilltop Elementary School celebrated the school’s annual Grandparents Day by inviting their grandparents to join them for a special musical performance and a visit to their classrooms on March 16. As the students entered the multi-purpose room to perform the musical portion of the day, they were greeted by their proud, excited and waving grandparents, armed with cameras, phones and video cameras to preserve memories of this special day. The students were under the direction of Stephanie Summers, Hilltop Elementary School music teacher, who was accompanied on the piano by Courtney Larson. “Good morning, everyone. I have the pleasure of working with your children and grandchildren every day. They have prepared a great performance for you and they have been working very hard. Thank you to the first-grade teachers for all their hard work, too. And thank you especially to Ms. Summers, our music teacher, and Courtney Larson, our accompanist. They have put in a lot of hard work putting this program together. I hope you enjoy our program
today,” said Joe Maroni, Hilltop Elementary School principal, as he welcomed the grandparents. Maroni then turned the program over to Summers. “Welcome everyone. We are going to start our program with a patriotic song ‘You’re a Grand Old Flag.’ It is the first song from a musical that sold a million copies. We hope you enjoy the show,” Summers said. Summers started the program with the Pledge of Allegiance and was followed by the students singing “You’re A Grand Old Flag.” The students then sang their school song, “Hilltop Elementary,” written by firstgrade teacher Charn Creed. Next in the performance was “Little Red Wagon,” followed by “My County ‘Tis of Thee.” The students then sang “Cluck, Cluck Red Hen,” which was a twist, with new lyrics, on “Ba, Ba Black Sheep.” In introducing the program’s finale, Summers thanked the grandparents for coming to the show. “Before we perform our finale, I would like to thank you so much for coming to our show today. And thank you for coming out on such a snowy morning! Our final song will be ‘The More We Get Together,’ which I thought was pretty appropriate for today, as you are getting
together with your grandchildren here at Grandparents Day,” Summers said The students performed “The More We Get Together” with special choreography included. When they finished, firstgrade teacher Charn Creed invited the grandparents to join their grandchildren with a little audience participation. “Once again our first-graders have pulled off a fabulous show. They loved singing “The More We Get Together.” They love bringing together friends and grandparents. They love it so much, they would like to sing it with you with a little audience participation,” Creed said. After a brief lesson in the choreography, the grandparents joined their grandchildren in singing a verse of “The More We Get Together,” with many laughs and cheers from both audience and performers. After the program, the students and their grandparents took turns visiting the art room with art teacher Diane Leonard, the gym with physical education teacher Linda Magyar and their classroom to visit with their teacher. The students and their grandparents also visited the library with Patti Hockensmith to peruse and shop at the school’s annual book fair.

Students say ‘yes’ to healthy lifestyle at Yes Fest By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Students f rom Ca rdina l Mooney High School learned to say “no” to drugs and “yes” to healthy choices during Mooney’s fourth annual YES Fest on March 22. Cardinal Mooney hosts YES Fest to bring awareness to students about drugs and alcohol and how there are plenty of alternatives to having a good time. The students listened to guest speaker Eric Ungaro and then visited with 50 different organizations in the gymnasium. “Students have the opportunity to say ‘no’ to drugs and ‘yes’ to healthy living,” said Ruth Mastriana, YES Fest coordinator and guidance department employee. Ungaro, a Youngstown native and Howland High School teacher and coach, spoke to the students about his brother’s struggle with drugs. The students were able to listen to a great speaker share his story about living with someone
who struggles with drugs and how it affects families and the community, as well as the individual who is struggling. “I liked him a lot, he was very good. I liked the points that he made,” said student Gina Ricciardi about Ungaro. The whole school, more than 500 students, attended the event. YES Fest was also open to the public which brought in parents and other members in the community. The students and guests had the opportunity to sign up and volunteer with the charities and organizations that were at the event. “I learned a lot today. I didn’t realize there were these many local organizations around here that we can get involved in,” said Ricciardi. Ricciardi said she had signed up to volunteer with a few charities including Habitat for Humanity and Animal Charities. She also took packets of information from other organizations she was interested in. “There are so many other things to do with yourself to keep healthy,” said Mastriana.
