Wow your mom on Mother’s Day with these gift ideas By NATALIE WRIGHT nscott@vindy.com

Everyone knows the traditional Mother’s Day gifts – chocolate, flowers, card – but for those of you looking to really wow your mom or any mother figure in your life this Mother’s Day, which is May 8 for those of you that are perhaps caught off guard, consider the following options. And don’t worr y, they are WRIGHT mom-approved by some of our favorite mothers on the Neighbors team. 1. Dinner: I know what you are thinking: I don’t know how to/like/ feel like cooking. Well, that’s just fine. Several local restaurants will be offering specials just for this occasion, so call your mom’s favorite one and see what they are offering. Note: Call as early as you can as reservations may be necessary. 2. A massage: This doesn’t have to be a break the bank situation, either. Use your superior research skills and learn how to give a great foot massage. Turn it into a DIY manipedi session. Any pampering will be appreciated. 3. A spa basket: And speaking of pampering! Make your own spa basket for your favorite mom. Spa staples include: lotion, shower gel, bubble bath, face mask and a soothing-scented candle. If you re-

ally want to go over the top with this one, a new bathrobe or slippers are always appreciated. 4. Clean the house” And I don’t mean just once. Offer to clean once a week for the next month if you can fit it into your schedule. Or offer to take over a chore entirely for her. This is a great one that even younger children can participate in. 5. Free day: Ask Mom what is on her to-do list that day and give her the day off. Chances are she has been putting off that “me” time for a while, so she will love the chance to have a day just to herself. 6. A girls night out: This one is more for the fathers out there looking to do something special for their ladies. Call her friends together and give your lucky lady a night out on the town. This will also give you some wonderful bonding time with your little ones. 7. Movie night: All of Mom’s favorite movies all night long. Add a little popcorn and you are set for a great night in. 8. Membership to a book subscription service: This one might cost a little bit, but for book lovers there is nothing like opening a box full of brand new titles in their favorite genres. 9. Putt Putt/mini golf: Really, any small competitive sport, as long as your mother is interested in that kind of thing. With the weather finally behaving the way it is supposed to, invite your mom to get out and enjoy a little fresh air and some friendly competition. Happy Mother’s Day!

Students get glance into working world By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Austintown Fitch High School hosted its first Business-STEM Fair on March 29. Marie Dockery and Ken Kilpatrick, both guidance counselors at Fitch, organized a Business-STEM Fair for the students of Fitch High School to attend. There were two presentations, one during first and second period for freshmen and sophomores, and one during third and fourth period for juniors and seniors. “This is our first businessSTEM fair and I wanted to include business because business is a main career that enables every other career because all careers are rooted in business,” said Dockery. The fair was put together for students who are interested in the field of business or STEM. Dockery estimated about 350 students attended the presentations. “We decided to focus on these careers and invite profession-

als into this school to speak to our students about how our students can obtain these careers. How they can go about being educated and what these careers entail,” said Dockery. Staff members at Fitch invited their colleagues in different professions to participate in the event. There was a committee of people who reached out to family and friends to be involved. There were 20 representatives from different companies, including Huntington National Bank, Brilex Industry, Turning Technology and many more, who came to speak to the students and give them advice on pursuing a career in the business or STEM fields. Each of the representatives gave a speech to the students, followed by a question and answer session. “I’m very grateful to all of our speakers that took time out of their busy schedules and jobs to come,” said Dockery. Fellows Riverside Gardens molds friendships and vases By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a stoneware windowsill vase class on March 15, taught by Lynn Cardwell. Students who attended the class had the opportunity to create their own vases with the help of Cardwell. The vases were made out of clay and texture was Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci added by using different fabrics, One of the guests at the vase class started shaping her clay in the design she wanted her vase. leaves and other objects. The students would start with clay that they had to soften and mold into the shape they wanted. Before the clay set, the different materials available for texture, would be put in the softened clay. The textures are what made the vases original and personalized to each person. “Once the clay is dried they’re fired once to a bisque, and then I’ll glaze them. Then I would fire them a second time and it turns the glaze into like a glass coating,” said Cardwell. There were finished vases and partially finished vases for the students to look at. They could then try and mold their vases to look like the examples or mold it into their own shape. The vases were to be narrow enough to set on a windowsill, but large enough to put a plant or other object inside. Waiting for the clay to dry and then going through the entire firing and glazing process takes about four to five weeks to get the completed vase. Fitch student becomes success story Austintown Fitch Junior, Melissa Stroud, knows what it means to overcome the odds. Stroud is a student currently in the foster care system having been taken in by an Austintown family this year. Prior to being placed with a family, Stroud was in a youth group home where she was elected into office by a group of her peers to serve as the media spokesperson for the Ohio Youth Advisory Board. Stroud was chosen for this opportunity due to her leadership skills, maturity and strong sense of responsibility. The Overcoming Hurdles in Ohio Youth Advisory Board is an organization of young people who have experienced foster care. It exists to be the knowledgeable statewide voice that influences policies and practices that affect all youth who have or will experience out-of-home care. From March 13-17, Stroud participated in Three Days on the Hill, which is an annual educational trip to Washington D.C. designed to provide foster care youth and alumni with opportunities to further their leadership development. Six youth from the state were able to participate, and Stroud was placed on the short list of preapproved attendees. During the trip, Stroud participated in a full day of training along with a meeting at the Housing and Urban Development headquarters. In addition, she also attended a meeting with 15 different legislators to discuss how to end the foster care to homeless pipeline and how to effectively prepare youth in foster care to build successful adult lives. Lisa Dickson, Communications Chair at ACTION Ohio, said she took the training very seriously and excelled during both meetings. After a long week of representing the Ohio Youth Advisory board, Stroud returned to school

Collin and Norah Chasko played the Bar-ba-loot Toss game at the Earth Day party on April 9 at the Austintown library.

Earth Day extravaganza is clean fun By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Austintown library hosted an Earth Day celebration on April 9. Lyndsay Cramer, an Austintown librarian, put together a Lorax themed party to celebrate Earth Day. The party started out with the book “How to Help the Earth-by the Lorax,” by Tish Rabe. “Earth Day is coming up on April 22 and I’m a big fan of the Lorax. I thought we would tie in Lorax activities into Earth Day,” said Cramer. After the children and their families listened to the book, there were several activities for the children to enjoy. They could play a magnetic fishing game with the Humming Fish, make Earth Day slime from corn starch and water, a cupstacking contest, a Bar-ba-loot toss game and several others. There was old construction paper the children could use to make cards and crafts from. Using the old construction paper was a way to show the children about using old things to create new things. One of the favorite crafts of the party was the supplies to plant a flower. There were seeds, an old yogurt cup the library collected for this event, dirt and water. The children could bury a seed in the dirt in the yogurt cup. After they watered the cup, there was a plastic bag for the cup to go in for the children to take home.

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. Go to the Austintown library on May 12 and May 19 at 10 a.m. for this event.

Families who participated in the Strengthening Families program at Austintown Middle School on April 3 worked on an activity given to them by the instructors of the program.

Program promotes family bonding By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Austintown Middle School is hosting a seven session after school program ca lled Strengthening Families April 4-25. Ma honing Count y Fa mily and Children First Council (MCFCFC) works with the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund (OCTF) to bring this program to places around the community. The sessions are used to help bring families together and strengthen communication between everyone. The program is designed for children ages 10-14 and their parents or guardians. The different activities for the sessions are designed to enhancing the relationship between the parent and their children. Aside from strengthening family bonding, the sessions provide an opportunity to work on drug and alcohol prevention and peer pressure. “They’ll do some family activities together. It may be looking at a family shield, what does our family agree on. Another cool activity they do is they draw a family tree. It’s not about who’s in it, it’s about the roots, what grounds you, the strength is the trunk and the

leaves are the individuals and their talents,” said Rachilla Basista, Administrator at Mahoning County Family and Children First Council. Each meeting will start with a meal for the children and their parents to share. After the meal, the parents and children are divided into two different rooms to have their own class discussion. The parents and children then come back together to work on an activity that focuses on strengthening and what they learned in their class session. The program is available t hroughout t he count y for schools and organizations who would like to host it. The only thing required from the host is three open rooms in the facility to use. MCFCFC uses t he f u nding they receive from the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund to work with individuals trained in the curriculum to facilitate the sessions. MCFCFC also uses the funds to contract with those who work in childcare to provide supervision for younger children and with vendors to provide the meals. There is no cost to families who wish to be part of the program, everything is provided.
