Austintown superintendent Vince Colaluca and President of the Austintown Board of Education Kathy Mock spoke at the grand opening of the new tennis courts on April 6.

Tennis court project helps build relationships By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Austintown Township Park celebrated the grand opening of its two new tennis courts on April 6. The six tennis courts at Austintown Township Park will now serve as the location for the Austintown Fitch High School tennis teams to practice and host tournament play. The district partnered with the trustees and the park to come to an agreement on the use of the tennis courts for the tennis teams. The two new tennis courts costs $160,000, which came

from the Austintown school district’s budget, to build. The Austintown school district is thankful for the partnership and collaboration they formed with the community, park officials and trustees to make the project come to life. Having the school practice and play at the Austintown Township Park allows for the community to come together in Austintown, rather than when the school had to play at Mill Creek Park’s Volney Park. “It’s all one system, it can’t be two separate entities,” said Austintown superintendent,

Vince Colaluca. The tennis courts will be open for the public, not just the school tennis team. Providing a new public facility will help bring in more traffic and more dollars in the community. “Collaboration is the action of working together to create a project for a common goal or objective. That’s why we’re here today, to celebrate a community collaboration with the Austintown School District and our friends at the Austintown Township Park,” said Kathy Mock, President of the Austintown Board of Education.

Mill Creek MetroParks Farm hosted its 24th annual Baby Animal Shower on April 10 to show off the new baby animals who arrived just in time for Spring.

Small animals bring in large crowd By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Mill Creek MetroParks Farm hosted its 24th annual Farm Animal Baby Shower on April 10. The farm was open to the public for people to come visit the three barns containing the baby farm animals. Several people attended and had the opportunity to interact with the animals. There were rabbits, horses, goats, pigs, chickens and more, some of them still awaiting the bird of their babies. Some of the animals at the farm are part of the Barnyard Buddies program. Barnyard Buddies is a program in which a

MetroParks staff member visits different schools and brings animals for the students to learn about and pet. Volunteers and other staff members of the MetroParks Farm were available for any questions people may have had. They watched over the animals and allowed people to hold or pet them if they wished. After visiting with the animals, cake and punch were available for the guests to enjoy. The baby shower celebration represents the opening of the farms. It is an event to let people know they are open for the season and are always welcoming visitors.

Congressman helps implement new lunch option for students By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Austintown Fitch High School re-introduced its salad bar on April 6 as a “going green” option for students during lunch. Fitch is providing an alternative option for students to choose for lunch and special guest, Congressman Tim Ryan, was there in support. Ryan sponsors the “Salad Bars in Schools Expansion Act,” which is a bill Ryan introduced in June 2015 to direct the United States Department of Agriculture to create a plan that would promote salad bars, along with a five year grant program and more training to schools. Tascin Brooks, the Austintown Food Service Director, worked with Youngstown State University nutrition interns to bring the salad bar back and finding ways for it be more cost effective and offer all of the vegetables to meet the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act. Students w ill be able to choose from three different types of lettuce, various toppings and meat or meat alternative options. The salad bar was designed to try and provide several different options for students to choose from to create their own salad. Ryan spoke to the students after they got their lunches about the importance of eating healthy and staying active. “You will be a direct result of what you put into your body. Your mind with either function at a very high level or when you eat a lot of crappy foods, it will function at a very low level,” Ryan told the students. Austintown Food Services is looking forward to see the success of the salad bar grow. They are always eager to provide new lunch options for the students. “You want to have high energy, a high level of focus, you want to have a high level of concentration, whether you’re talking about your school work or you’re talking about athletics,” said Ryan.
