Daryl

Snickers

Daryl was being fed outside by a wonderful person who then brought him in when the weather turned colder. He likes people and other cats. It would take a very special person(s) to work with Daryl. Daryl is considered a Special Needs cat. You must have patience and time. Daryl turned two on Nov. 6. He is nervous and timid. He interacts with the volunteers and the other cats and has made great progress! I would not recommend having a dog with him though. Daryl would like a quiet home so he can learn to trust again.

Its has been one year since Snickers was a part of a real family and has had an actual home. Found as a stray in Trumbull County in April Snickers was never claimed by his owner. He hung around for a while at TCDP, then we brought him to our shelter. He’s come a long way in that year. He has been through surgery. Snickers met a lot of people that had thought he would be a good fit but he has been disappointed many times. We are offering training for him with his adoption, which will be covered by our volunteers.

Fitch drama puts on family-fun performance By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown Fitch Drama Department put on a presentation of the play “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” on April 15, 16 and 17 at Fitch High School. There was a “soft opening” for several nursing homes in the Austintown community on April 14. This performance gave the students an opportunity to prepare for their opening public performance on April 14. Around 70 students are part of the drama club at Fitch, whether they are performing on stage or working backstage. The students have been working since November to prepare for the show. There were students from Austintown Middle and Intermediate schools that also took part in the play. The students on stage ranged from 11-18 years-old. “It’s a show that this stage hasn’t seen before, it’s a big deal this year. I’m stoked be-

tra consisted of Fitch students, as well as professional musicians. Many of the costumes were made by Klein’s assistant, Mia Pizzullo, out of bed sheets brought in by the students. Highway Taberncale in Austin-

Three students in the Austintown School District received a special ride home from school. Superintendent Vincent Colaluca took matters into his own hands by driving the children home in Austintown’s eight passenger van. The three Austintown elementary students could not get home by bus, because of the road closure on route 46. That’s where Colaluca’s van training and certification came in handy. The school van is often used for field trips, but in this case, it helped solve an unexpected problem. Colaluca says he drove the children home because there was no other driver available, even Transportation Director Colleen Murphy-Penk was on a route to ensure other children were home on time. Camron Lynn is pictured here getting dropped off by Superintendent Colaluca.

Growth foundation discusses 911 merger Sheriff Jerry Greene from the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department was the guest of the Austintown Growth Foundation at its April 12 meeting. He spoke about the 911 merger between Austintown, Boardman and Mahoning County 911 Dispatch. He has begun talking to both Austintown and Boardman about updating their systems, but in the meantime the tax cuts made by the state

with no tax dollars available has made it difficult. He finally was able to merge both Austintown and Boardman with the county and by getting a $2.7 million loan to purchase new equipment with 10 years to pay it off at $270,000 per year. The county saves enough money from this merger to make it feasible to repay the loan. They added two more channels and two towers bringing the

total to four towers. No one lost their jobs. The two unions absorbed county dispatchers and all three communities were on board with the merger. It makes for a much better system. In the future, it is the hope that the outlying districts may choose to merge with the system. Commissioner, David Ditzler complimented the Sheriff on the great job he is doing.

Schools serve senior citizens supper By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Austintown Fitch High School students, staff and board members hosted their semi-annual Senior Citizens dinner on April 12. Barb Kliner, the grant coordinator for Austintown School District, has been the organizer of this event for 22 years, with this year being her last due to her retirement. Senior citizens, ages 65 and older, of Austintown are welcomed to the high school to enjoy food, music and company. The dinners usually bring in 250-300 seniors. Fitch students, sta f f a nd

board members volunteer to help serve meals during the dinner. There are always students actively volunteering and different groups always get the opportunity to volunteer. There were students from Key Club, Interact, cheerleaders, athletes and several others. Fitch’s band and choir students also attend the dinner to provide music for the guests to listen to as they ate. “This is a wonderful district. We have a lot to be proud of, we have a lot to brag about. This is our chance to brag a little bit,” said Kliner. Having the dinner twice a

year allows Austintown community members to come into the schools and see the things the students have done. The dinner also allows the students to be interactive with each other, as well as faculty from Austintown and the Austintown seniors. The dinner has been a success occurring for many years and the Austintown administration is looking to keep it going. The senior citizens are grateful for the chance to get a meal and entertainment for only $2. “It’s our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the senior citizens of Austintown,” said Kliner.

Lunch Seminar

Austintown native and NFL player Mike McGlynn visited Austintown Middle School on April 22 to speak to the eighthgrade student-athletes. McGlynn is a current free agent in the NFL who grew up in Austintown and attended Austintown schools. He came to AMS to speak to the students

about the importance of focusing on their school work even if they are involved in a sport. McGlynn talked about his time in the Austintown school district and how he focused more on his athletics rather than his academics. He told the students that looking back he wished he paid more attention to his academics. With the students going into their fresh-

man years, McGlynn told them this is the time for them to push harder and pay attention to their schoolwork as much as they do their athletics. The biggest idea that McGlynn focused on was the aspect of not why, but how. “The only thing I ask you is don’t ask ‘why,’ but say ‘how’,” See MCGLYNN, Page 8

McGlynn told the students. McGlynn told the students to ask things like “how am I going to reach my goals” and “how can I achieve what I want to achieve.” Excuses come from asking why, and once one excuse is made it’s easier for others to believe other ex-

cuses after that. The students were told they have to overcome any adversity they may run into if they want to keep going for their goal. McGlynn said that as a student, he never thought he would be in the NFL for eight years, but the only way he thought he had out was through football. He worked toward his dreams and overcame difficulties to make his
