Host families needed for Northern Ireland teens The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program that brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States. Founded in 1975, the program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. The group is searching for host families for two boys from Northern Ireland. Teens will arrive on June 27 and will depart on July 27. The host family should have a male teen between the ages of 14 and 17. This life-changing experience includes six service projects (Purple Cat, Potential Development, Mill Creek Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Jubilee Gardens and Zion Lutheran Food Bank) as well as many fun events, such as a Scrappers Game, a road rally and a trip to Cedar Point to name a few. If you are interested in hosting a teen, contact Greg at 330-770-1440. For more information, visit ulsterprojectmv.com.

Fitch art students participate in Pat Catan’s Iron Crafters competition Pat Catan’s hosted the 12th annual Iron Crafters event on April 16. The event is a competition between schools to create a project that is unknown to them until the morning of competition. The event is a way for students and schools to compete while having fun creating art. In a race against the clock, the teams must plan their project, organize their crafting supplies and create a craft masterpiece that not only incorporates the secret craft ingredient (which was clothespins this year) but also keeps to the year’s Iron Crafter theme. This year’s theme was “Kinetic Structure” with the require-
ment being to show mobility in the creation. Each team had an identical box of craft supplies to work with, but the creations had to be completely unique. The team with the best finished project at each store was named that store’s Iron Crafter champions. This year, the blue team, consisting of Fitch juniors Wendy Liu, Katie O’Brien, Morgan Crawford and Jasmine Loyen, came away with the win. Team members earned $25 each, a trophy and $100 for the school. Also participating were students on the red team, including freshman Samantha Learn and sophomores Brandon Marroquin and Kacie Roth.

Counselors from schools all over the Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Portage counties attended the Digital Danger presentation on April 19 at Mahoning County Career and Techincal Center.
Presentation helps prevent Internet danger By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Mahoning County Career and Technial Center hosted a Digital Danger presentation on April 19. Digital Danger is an Ohio program that provides digital safety training to parents, children and students all around the Ohio area. Presenters travel around Ohio to teach people about the prevention of Internet related crimes. Kelley Mills, an Austintown guidance counselor, helped
set up the event. Mills started the event by giving a brief introduction of what is going to be discussed, then proceeded to tell the guests to use the clickers they received to answer a few questions. Some of the questions that were asked prior to the presentation were asked again after to see what the guests learned. Mandy Scrocco, a Boardman elementary school counselor, was next to speak. She talked about how elementary counselors help students with various
issues and challenges they may be dealing with. Judge Theresa Dellick took the stage after Scrocco and spoke a little about what she sees in juvenile court dealing with Internet danger. “The counselor’s goal, when you get to the heart of it, is to be an advocate for our children and to help create a learning environment that is safe, caring and supportive,” Scrocco told the audience. Tree planted in honor of former student By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Au st i ntow n E lement a r y School hosted a Tree Dedication Ceremony on April 29 for former student, Chloe Cox, who passed away in 2014. Cox was a lifelong resident of Austintown and attended Lloyd Elementary School, Frank Ohl Intermediate and Austintown Middle School. Family members, staff and second-grade students from Austintown Elementary gathered together to participate in the tree dedication. Secondgrade principal, Tom Lenton, began the ceremony with a speech about Cox and introduc-
tions for the teachers and other members of Austintown who have been impacted by Cox. “The joy that she brought to my life and in the classrooms and in the teachers lives will never, ever, ever be forgotten,” said Danielle Bendel, an Educational Assistant, and one of Cox’s first aides, at Austintown. Cox’s teachers and family stepped to the podium to talk about all of the memories and the impact Cox had left. The guests and even the secondgrade students who attended the ceremony were brought to tears at the heartwarming stories they heard about Cox. “When Chloe passed, I had never seen so much love for
a tiny, little girl. I didn’t even realize how many lives she touched,” said Jeannie Cox, Chloe’s mother. The guests went outside to watch the tree planting in honor of Cox. The tree was representative of the life that Cox had in her and the life that she wanted to share with others. “My hope is that boys and girls as they continue to come to Austintown Elementary School, for some reason they’ll see this tree and they’ll want to be better people and they’ll want to bring out the best in people. That’s the spirit of Chloe and that’s what I hope this tree inspires in everybody,” said Lenton.

Children grow a ‘lichen’ to moss pets By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Garden hosted its monthly Sprout Club event on April 21. Mandy Smith led the class and taught the children all about moss, algae and lichen. After a brief introduction, the children went outside into the garden to find different kinds of moss, algae and lichen. There
were stones and cement ground covered with moss, trees covered with lichen and wet stones from the fountain covered with algae. The children learned how each type of plant is beneficial to the environment and how they are created. The children were eager to have the chance to go outside and be able to look and touch the different plants
they were learning about. “Marimo moss come from lakes in Japan and what happens is water moves back and forth and it takes the algae and starts to shape it round. People in Japan have had Marimo moss pets for hundreds of years and they can live for hundreds of years,” said Smith. At the end of the class, each of the children got to make a
little home for their own Marimo moss ball. The children put in beads, shells, pearls, rocks and many others items in a jar to make the Marimo moss ball a nice home. Everyone was allowed to take home their Marimo moss ball and have their own little moss pet. The Marimo balls the children were given were small, but can grow to be the size of a soccer ball.

First Night Youngstown announces annual button design competition

SAFETY
Continued from Page 4
Officer Don Stanko and Dr. Tim Conrad, t wo presenters with the Digital Danger program, spent the rest of the evening helping parents and school counselors learn how to keep children out of danger on the Internet. “Doors open and doors close simply by the use of social media. That’s my message today, simply by what we post can we open doors for ourselves, can we help our kids open doors based on what we post and can we make sure that those doors
do not close based on what they post,” Conrad told the audience. Stanko and Conrad gave tips and tricks to help parents keep their children out of Internet danger. The two presenters told guests about anonymous apps and apps that are created to look like something they are not. At the end of the night, the parents, counselors and students walked away with more knowledge about Internet danger and ways to prevent it and stay out of it. The night consisted of several stories, experiences and advice that would help benefit those who listened.
First Night Youngstown is calling for local and regional artists to participate in the annual design competition of its New Year’s Eve events admission button. The winning artist will be promoted at all press events. The artist will also be a celebrity guest in the Downtown Christmas holiday parade and tree-lighting event. The button series is traditionally intended to celebrate downtown Youngstown’s unique historic buildings and architecture. Buttons may be designed using any medium and then digitally saved as a .jpeg. Artists should depict Youngstown in a manner that highlights New Year’s Eve, no champagne glasses or images of drinking alcohol; First Night events
are family-friendly. The design must include the phrase “First Night Youngstown 2017.” Interested artists should call 330-744-9966 or email firstnightyoungstown@gamil.com. Submission deadline is Aug. 31. Each year, admission buttons provide entry to all First Night events on New Year’s Eve in downtown Youngstown, sold at $5 and $10 each. Proceeds from the sale help compensate performers.

On April 27, senior Kaelyn Puhalla announced her decision to attend Westminster College next year to play soccer. She said the decision came after touring the campus and getting input from others who currently attend the college. Puhalla was a four year starter and letter winner for the Austintown Fitch girls soccer team. She earned numerous recognitions throughout her four year playing career at Fitch including three-time district player, AAC player, MVP of the Senior All Star game and voted best forward by her teammates. She was on top percentile of the team’s stats including breaking two school records, one for most assists in a season at 13 and the second for career assists at 36. Pahulla was a captain for the team and was a leader on and off the field. Pictured are, from left, mother Christine Puhalla, Kaelyn Puhalla, father David Puhalla and girls soccer coach Tex Martin.
