The Fourth-Grade Foresters program was created to provide a simple way to give the students a tree of their own to plant and care for. It helps the improve the environment that the students are growing up in. At the end of the presentation, all of the students were given a tree, courtesy of the Boardman Lions Club, to take home and plant. Planting the trees is a simple, easy and inexpensive way to help improve the

community. Boardman Lions Club members Joni Blase and Kristen Dailey talked to the students about how to care for their trees. They told them how the trees need to be planted, watered and taken care of to grow into a big, healthy tree. The Boardman Lions Club annual event is in it’s seventh year and continues to be a growing success.

champion in the shot put with a throw of 51 feet 6.75 inches and finished fourth in disc with a throw of 156 feet 2 inches, Lewis placed fourth in the vault at career best 12 feet. “George had a great meet,” said Phillips. “Our district has excellent throwers and we have not had a district champion in a throwing event in some time.” The Spartans capped off the meet by placing fourth in the 4x400 with the team of AduPoku, junior Justice Jama and sophomores Josh Rodriguez and Eri Ojewale in season best time of 3:32. The Spartans scored in a variety of events, including the high jump where Jama was seventh and senior Richard Fisher was eighth. Junior Steven Amstutz placed fifth in the shot put with a career-best throw of 49 feet 2.5 inches. A Commons at Greenbriar resident was able to explore the Eiffel Tower using virtual reality on April 18.

Residents explore the world with virtual reality goggles By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Residents at the Commons at Greenbriar took a virtual tour of places around the world using virtual reality goggles on April 18. Activities director Meghan Miller set up a virtual reality demonstration for the residents to take part in. They could ride a roller coaster at Cedar Point, look at the Eiffel Tower and explore the Milky Way Galaxy. Before they started the demonstration, Miller asked each of the residents where they wanted to visit. There were answers

ranging from Paris to the moon. None of the residents had used virtual reality goggles and were excited to try something new. Paul was the first resident to volunteer to go and he decided to ride a roller coaster at Cedar Point. The virtual reality glasses showed a 360-degree view of the different scenarios depending on which way the person moved their head. On ly t hose wea r i ng t he glasses could see the environment, but the sounds were loud enough for the others in the room to hear.

Several residents described the experience as “wonderful” and “fun.” Some of the ones who decided to experience the roller coaster used their hands to reenact like they were actually on a roller coaster and made comments of what they were able to see all around them as they rode the coaster. While one resident was using the goggles, the others would have them describe what they were feeling and what all they could see. The demonstration made for a fun afternoon for the residents as they were able to try something new together.

Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program.
