CHC hosts annual Career Day By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School attended the school’s annual Career Day, which offered them an opportunity to learn about a variety of careers on May 12. The event, organized by Diane Dankovich, guidance counselor at C.H. Campbell Elementary and Hilltop Elementary, presented a large selection of careers provided by parent volunteers, community volunteers and Mahoning County Career and Technical Center students. A SWAT vehicle and Canfield Police Department’s new police dog, Rocky, and his handler, CPD Officer Chad DeBarr, also visited the school. “I really appreciate all the professionals who have taken time out of their schedules for our kids today. I am also very excited that the MCCTC students were interested in participating here today. They brought several interactive tools, which are holding the children’s attention, which is great,” Dankovich said. Local chapter celebrates Patriot’s Day The Mahoning Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution gathered at Davidson’s restaurant in Cornersburg on April 22 to celebrate Patriot’s Day. Patriot’s Day marks the 242nd anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord, which took place on April 19, 1775. Highlights of the program included an address by Ron Smith and Patricia Sexton co-founders of the traveling “Wall,” which comprises 100 feet of panels, designed and commissioned to honor the men and women of all wars from the Revolution to the War on Terror. They summed up their effort by saying ”the Spirit of America’s Story wants to kindle America’s sense of patriotism, ignite our respect for those who wear uniforms and bring us all together as a country.”

Ohio State Treasurer and Northeastern Chapter President Steve Hinson visited with the Mahoning Valley chapter and presented Fort Lauren coins to Smith and Sexton for their patriotic effort on behalf of veterans. President Phil Bracy introduced Dan Matheke, Secretary for Northeastern Chapter, who administered the oath welcoming Russ and Christopher Wentz as new members of the Mahoning Valley Chapter. Matheke was sponsor for the Wentz’s. Bracy also announced that plans had been made to recruit in May and June in Trumbull County, chaired by Scott Davis. At the same time, John Opre will serve as chair for a recruitment effort in Columbiana County. Bracy went on to thank both Troy Bailey and Dan Matheke for all their efforts helping orga-

nize the Chapter last year. The Sons of the American Revolution is a historical, educational and patriotic organization. The purposes of the society are to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, respect for National symbols, appreciation for true patriotism, the values of American citizenship, the unifying force of e pluribus unum that was created from the people of many nations, one nation and one people. Its members are male descendants of people who can document ancestry to those who served in the Revolutionary War, or who contributed to establishing the Independence of the United States. If you would like information on the chapter contact Craig, Chapter Registrar, at cbcamp5@ zoominternet.net or Phil at pjbracy@outlook.com.

CHS students learn how to make Easter favorite By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Canfield High School students in Terri Dance’s Nutrition and Wellness class welcomed a special visitor April 11-12. Margaret Stanko visited the class to demonstrate how to make an Easter favorite, nut kolache. Stanko, a retired family and consumer science teacher, spent 37 years teaching in the Youngstown Schools. On the first day of her visit, Stanko showed the students

how to ma ke t he kolache dough. She shared with them her recipe, which would yield 12 kolache rolls. “Each recipe is different. Thank you for inviting me to show you my recipe,” Stanko told the students. The students helped Stanko measure the ingredients for the dough, chop the walnuts and crack eggs. W hen the dough was finished, Stanko told the students it had to sit overnight in the

refrigerator. When she returned the next morning, the students helped her roll out the dough and make the nut filling for the kolache. Of course, the students were

then given the opportunity to sample the nut kolache they had helped make. Dance gave each student a copy of the nut kolache recipe for them to try out at home.

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center’s school Board approved the “MCCTC School Farm” at a recent board meeting, and staff and students aren’t wasting anytime getting started. Anthony Cycyk and Anina Karlovic, teachers at MCCTC, and School Farm student advisory members, already have a plan in place and are excited to get it started. “It all started when we were studying the American food culture and the students could not believe how unhealthy Americans eat,” Karlovic said. “ They came up with ideas on what they could do to help, and starting a school farm was an overwhelming response.” The students then came up with a plan and presented it to the school Board for their approval. The plan has three phases and is set to be completed by 2019. Phase one is focused on planting a half acre of a variety of crops to research the success and failures. They will also develop a system of summer volunteers to help work in the farm. In phase two they will concentrate on extending the growing season and focusing growing efforts on what can be used in the cafeteria. Grant writing and sustainability will also be a priority in this phase. In phase three there is a plan to incorporate community gardening plots so that community members can have a place to garden (zoning restrictions in developments do not often allow gardens). The “MCCTC School Farm” will also include many programs from the school. They will be able to use the following programs: culinary program for fresh food as well as using the waste for compost, biotechnology for soil and plant research, Valley STEM for environmental science and clean energy classes, National Technical Honor Society for volunteer opportunities, digital print for marketing and floral design and landscaping opportunities. “This will be such a positive hands-on learning environment for our teachers and students.” Cycyk said. “We are not only increasing the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, but we are also enhancing our platform for teaching core subjects.”

C.H. Campbell celebrates Earth Day CALL TODAY TO WIN By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

In celebration of Earth Day, fourth-grade students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School participated in a tree planting ceremony to help Canfield keep its designation as Tree City U.S.A. on April 28. Mayor Bernie Kosar, Sr. made a dedication proclamation during the planting and Enid Moldonado of the Canfield Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Board attended the ceremony. The students and their guests gathered in front of the school where a Dawn Redwood tree

had been planted and dedicated to the fourth-grade class. The students opened the ceremony by reading a poem, class by class, honoring trees. “That was beautiful. The tree which has been planted here is a Dawn Redwood. If you come back in 83 years, it will have grown 150 feet in the air, its diameter will be six feet and its circumference will be 19 feet around,” Mayor Kosar told the students. Mayor Kosar then presented a proclamation to the students and their school. “I am presenting this procla-

mation to memorialize what we are doing here today. This proclamation honors the fourthgrade class and C.H. Campbell Elementary School for helping the City of Canfield achieve its 36th year as a Tree City U.S.A and designates April 28 as Tree City Arbor Day. As a Tree City, Canfield pledges to protect, improve and beautify the environment,” Mayor Kosar said. The fourth-grade students have been studying the importance of trees and their ability to create oxygen, prevent erosion, make food and create habitats for animals.
