HONEY
Bit came into the West Side Cats shelter without much background on her. She is a cute female gray cat, roughly around 4 1/2 years-old. She loves to be petted and gets along with the other cats at the shelter. She would most likely get along with school-age children and adults, but they are not sure about little ones. The shelter does not know how she would feel about dogs. All in all, Bit is a very nice, friendly little girl. Stop by West Side Cats to see her.
Honey is a sweet-tempered 3-year-old mix breed that currently weighs about 30 pounds. She is housebroken and very well behaved, as well as loving, although she needs a cat free home. If you have a resident dog, you will need to bring it with you when you come to meet Honey. Please PM Pawz 2 Adopt on their Facebook page for more information.

STEM students showcase projects By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Austintown Middle School hosted its fourth annual STEM Showcase on May 3. There are 50 students in the STEM program at AMS, 25 seventh-graders and 25 eighthgraders. Students who wish to be in the STEM program in seventh- and eighth-grade must apply because the program only allows 25 students from each grade. The students integrate STEM work into all of their core curriculums. They work on science, technology, engineering and math hands-on projects throughout the day. “This is what’s called a selfcontained STEM program, meaning they’re doing STEM work all day. It’s not like an extra special class or after-school project, it’s a program in itself” said Danielle Chine, the STEM Coach. Students teach and learn about different modules like design and modeling, computer design and programs, automation products and flight and space. The eighth-graders launch bottle rockets and go over the elements and basics of flight. The seventh- and eighthgrade students in STEM help teach a junior STEM program for the sixth-grade students at AMS. The sixth-grade students have STEM meetings once a month to prepare them if they wish to apply for the program in seventh- and eighth-grade. The stage was filled with trophies, stock cars and super stock cars, information and displays all about the Soap Box Derby the STEM students competed it. Students in STEM travel to Soap Box Derby competitions to race in with the cars they built themselves while in STEM. “Your top speed is 35 miles per hour and it’s just really fun. It’s a lot different than you would expect it to be,” said Julia Marscio, one of the super stock car drivers. “You have to be flexible and willing to drive.” Super stock cars are bigger and provide more room and opportunities for taller people

to drive, while stock cars are smaller and require smaller drivers. Three drivers, Marscio, Isabella Butchko and Sydney Spencer, explained how the driver has to be flexible and be able to get low to become more aerodynamic. “I was one of the shortest so I was like ‘Okay, sure. Why not? It sounds fun.’” said Butchko, a
stock car driver. The showcase was designed to display the projects the students worked on as a team to create throughout the year. Each project had representatives standing by to explain what they were. The STEM program at AMS gets the students ready as they transition into the high school STEM program.

Daughters become models at Mother’s Day tea By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Mothers and daughters gathered at the Lariccia Family Community Center at Boardman Park on May 1 for an afternoon of tea, crafts and fashion at the 12th annual Mommy and Me for Tea event. There were two tea times, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Both were sold out with around 45 couples making for 90 people at each tea. The event started off with a light lunch and tea. Following the lunch was craft time, where there were several tables full of different crafts for the guests to make. A professional photographer was there to take pictures of the mother and daughter couples. These pictures could then be put in the frames that the daughters made during craft time. The daughters had the chance to participate in a runway fashion show to bring the tea to an end. The daughters walked down a carpet runway to music and posed at different spots as a description is read aloud to the mothers and other guests. “They get to be a model and mom gets to write all about them and brag about her daughter,” said Karen McCallum, Boardman Park Recreation Director.

Pawstown hosts first Star Paws Mutt Mingle By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Pawstown in Boardman Park hosted its first Star Paws Mutt Mingle on May 4. May the Fourth be w ith you was the inspiration for this first ever Star Paws Mutt Mingle. Families could bring their dogs to the park for free to run around, participate in a dog costume contest and learn about becoming a member of Pawstown in Boardman Park. Boardman Park partnered with Animal Charity to make the Star Wars themed event a fun time for the dogs and their owners. Animal Charity provided information about pet adoptions and answered any other questions the guests may have had. The Mutt Mingle had plenty of vendors at the event selling clothing and food for the dogs. There was a 50-50 raffle where the proceeds benefited the Animal Charity and Pawstown of Boardman Park. Although the Mutt Mingle was free and open to the public, a dog park membership is needed if someone wishes to bring their dog to the park any other time. The event gave information to those who may have been interested in becoming a member after attending the event.
