“Where we really got to talking about it is out at Idora Park, we had a show out there. That’s where it really started at,” said Elmer Lydic, president of the MVOCC. The MCOCC is grateful for their members and the supporters in the community because without them, there would be no club. The club started at Southern Park Mall in 1978. Bud Gane, founding member, reserved a room at the Southern Park Mall and hosted a meeting for those who
would be interested in joining the MVOCC. At first the room was empty, but right as time was winding down dozens of people came in to show their interest in joining. “The room was packed, right around the 100 mark,” said Gane. The cost for those who wish to register their car in the car cruise is $3 and that fee benefits the Hospice of the Valley and area children’s charities. The Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club currently helps out three children a year and is hoping after this year they can sponsor one more child.
The Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club is looking to complete their $50,000 donation the Hospice of the Valley this year. Once they reach their goal, they will receive a plaque for their accomplishment. The annual “Car in Park” event will be hosted at Boardman Park on Aug. 6. This year they are having a Kids Korner area which they hope will help children get involved in the antique car hobby. More information about registering for the Car Cruise can be found by attending a cruise or by emailing dandtbay@ zoominternet.net.

Every month Austintown librarian Lindsay Platt hosts a paper craft program for people to come in and make a different craft. All of the materials needed were supplied and Platt told the guests the instructions before they began. This month, the guests made a “Dooney and Bark” bag. It was a mini paper bag that had dog bone and fire hydrant patterns. The craft was called “Dooney a nd Ba rk” when someone made a remark that it looks like a Dooney and Bourke bag for dogs. There were several guests who have gone to most, if not all, of the paper craft programs. Many of the guests attend with their friends while others come by themselves. Those who have come for several programs have formed bonds with each other. The attendees say that this program is something that allows them to show their creative side while spending time with their friends and making new ones. There was a sample of what the craft would be next months and guests who attended had the opportunity to sign up for the next program.

Boutique brings families together By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Thousands of people gathered together for the 13th biannual spring Baby Bargain Boutique at Boardman Park on May 20. More than 150 vendors set up tents and tables to sell gently used items, such as clothes and toys, to the shoppers who attended the event. There were no commercial vendors, only families who sold items to other families. Families selling to other families helps bring a sense of togetherness and bonding within the community. Severa l vendors come to both events, and have been coming for many years. There are also new vendors who have shopped at the boutique, but never sold anything. The new vendors enjoy helping out fam-
ilies like they have been helped out. “I came with my friends to help prepare for a our friend’s baby shower,” said Katie Pugh. Those who come to shop come for various reasons. They buy things for baby showers, their children, their family or friends’ children and as gifts for a birthday or holiday. The vendors and shoppers are the ones who continue to make the Baby Bargain Boutique a success because of their commit ment to t he event. Those who continuously come to one or both events year after year help bring the community together while having fun shopping. The fall Baby Bargain Boutique will take place again at Boardman Park in September.

Dandelion knowledge blows into Sprout Club at Fellows By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Ch i ld ren at t he mont h ly Sprout Club program met on May 18 at Fellows Riverside Gardens to learn about dandelions. Lynn Zocolo, horticulture educator, teaches the children each month about a different part of the environment. This month the children got handson with dandelions and the different parts. The progra m sta rted out with a coloring sheet for children to color until everyone came and the lesson could be g i n . Z oc olo t aug ht t he children about the different parts of a dandelion and then passed those parts out for the children to look at and feel. The children had the opportunity to examine the stem, the leaves, the flower and the seeds. Zocolo also informed the children that parts of the dandelions are safe to eat, but only after asking an adult.
M a n y p e op l e a s s o c i a t e blowing the dandelion seeds with making a wish, so the children made their own wish necklaces. They were given ribbon, a container on the ribber, dandelion seeds and an acorn top as the lid. There was a tag on the necklace t hat sa id “Some see a weed, I see a wish.” The children were supposed to make a wish as they put the seeds into the container. After making the necklaces, the children tried blowing bubbles with the hollow stem. There was an experiment to see if bubbles or water mixed w ith soap created the best bubbles. In the end, the soap mixture produced the most and biggest bubbles. Sprout Club educations children in a hands-on way that gives them the opportunity to have fun while doing it.
