The weather balloon was launched into the air by eight eight-grade Austintown Middle School STEM students on May 12.

Students knowledge inflates with balloon launch By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Austintown Middle School STEM students launched their weather balloon on May 12 at the Greenwood Chevorlet Austintown Falcon Stadium. This year was the third year the seventh- and eighth-grade students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program at Austintown Middle School launched their weather balloon. The balloon is 1200 grams and is filled with 80 cubic feet of helium. There is a GPS tracking device, two GoPro cameras and a flight computer tracks temperature, pressure and humidity on the balloon,

which allows the students to gather information. “It really ties in with all our education, we do a flight and space unit. We talk about all our data in class and it’s a really good experiment to test how high it can go, where our atmosphere is,” said Alexis Poschner, an eighth-grade STEM student. The students worked on preparing the balloon for about three weeks before the launch. The morning of the launch, there is a team of eight eighthgrade students who set up and inflate the balloon, which takes between 45 minutes and an hour. After the balloon is ready, the students release it into the

sky. “My favorite part would definitely be going on the chase to go find the balloon,” said Poschner. The eight students go on a trip with James Penk, AMS principal, and Jason Fruedenberg, STEM instructor, to chase the balloon and see where it lands. The students use the SPOT GPS app to track the balloon so they can find it when it lands, usually in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The students leave Austintown after the balloon is launched and spend most of the day tracking it. The STEM students use the footage from the GoPro cam-

eras on the balloon to create a video to upload to their YouTube account. The weather balloon launch is a project the seventh- and eighth-grade students look forward to every year.

T he Cor nersbu rg Da i r y Queen hosted a Sip and Paint event for Mother’s Day on May 7. Dairy Queen gave children the opportunity to decorate an ice cream cake for their mother for Mother’s Day. The Cornersburg Dairy Queen has been putting on this event for about 10 years and does it twice a year, once for Mother’s Day and once Father’s Day. Ray Smith, the owner of the Cornersburg Dairy Queen, said there is normally a good turn-

out with between 50-70 people showing up. When Dairy Queen started this event, people had to sign up to participate. Now there is the option to sign up prior to the event or walk in, which is what most people chose to do. The guests were able to pick out which size cake they wanted and if they wanted a regular Dairy Queen cake or a Blizzard cake. “Kids really love interactive things, that’s why they’re decorating cakes,” said Smith. Dairy Queen employees help each child decorate their cake, whether it be with airbrushing

colors onto the cake or writing a special message on top. The employees are always happy to help and really enjoy working with the children, it’s something they have fun with. “We just try to make their day,” said Smith. T he C or ner sbu r g Da i r y Queen puts on several events throughout the year. They host an Easter event, Miracle Treat Day, customer appreciation day, pumpkin hunts and a Christmas event. The events are to bring children and their families in to enjoy interactive activities and make their own treats.

Rich Center receives large donation from MCCTC students By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Rich Center for Autism received a generous donation on May 12 from students who attend Mahoning Country Career and Technical Center. Kayla Windsor, Rachel Perkins and Ty Cook, students from MCCTC, decided to have a book drive for their Honors English class project. The students were divided into groups and had to come up with a community service project that involved donating their time, volunteering and

receiving items for donations. “We chose to do a book drive because I like kids and everyone was mutual on what we wanted to do,” said Windsor. The students decorated boxes and spread them out around the Poland, Struthers, Boardman, Lowelville and West Branch areas. The boxes were out from April 11-30, in honor of National Autism Awareness Month. “They have been piling up in my living room, almost to the ceiling,” said Windsor about the boxes full of books. Windsor, Perkins and Cook

contacted the Rich Center and asked if they would be willing to partner with the students for the fundraiser. The Rich Center received over $2,700 worth of toys, 558 books and $50 worth of monetary donations. After bringing in all of the donations, the MCCTC students had the opportunity to visit the students, read to them and play with them and their new toys. “Thank you to everyone who donated books and a huge thank you to Maui Toys. They’re the ones who donated all the toys.” said Windsor.

Austintown residents support fellow community member By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown community came together to organize a benefit dinner for Carmela Lipiello Jones on May 22 at the Austintown Senior Center. Jones was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 2004. The benefit dinner was created to raise money to help Jones with her medical and everyday living costs. All of the

proceeds earned will be given to her to use for whatever she needs. Patricia Cranes, the coordinator of the dinner and Jones’ best friend, said when she got the word out many of her friends and classmates were more than willing to help with what needed done. Planning for the benefit dinner began at the end of March. “Carmela has been my best

friend since we were 12-yearsold,” said Cranes. Jones is the sole income of her family and with her diagnoses she is unable to bring in enough money for medical bills and other living expenses. The money raised at the dinner will benefit Jones and her son in a tremendous way. The guests could take part in a Chinese auction, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. All

of the prizes were donated by friends, family and other guests and the food was provided by an anonymous donor. Guests had the option of staying in to eat or choosing carry-out. In addition to the benefit dinner, a GoFundMe account has been set up for Jones and The Carmela Jones Fund has been set up at First National Bank for people to make donations.

Students are pictured observing birds through their binoculars as part of the Bluebird Project. The project came about as part of a grant received by Biology/Zoology teacher Stacey Pavlik.

Fitch Falcons learn about bird breeding habits By AMANDA TONOLI atonoli@vindy.com

Fitch High School students found some feathered first signs of spring. “The red-winged blackbirds are the first to come back from migration. They are really the first signs of spring,” said senior Scotty Duffy. Biology and zoology teacher Stacey Pavlik asked her class to focus on the impact nonnative birds have on the breeding success of native birds. She was able to allow her students to embrace their independence in the construction of 18 nest boxes and later placement throughout the Falcon Campus. It is her hope that through years of calculating nesting success, the Falcons to Bluebirds project will establish breeding populations of native birds around the school campus. Students researched and strategically placed the boxes, paid for by a $1,500 grant from the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, around campus with a minimum of 50 yards between

them. All Pavlik asked was that they explain things as they went through the process. “The distance is for territorial boundaries,” said Bryce Warmouth, a junior. “They have bubbles and can’t pop other birds’ bubbles. They’ll fight with each other.” Students ran from box to box, taking notes on new, old and inprogress nests. Supplies for the nest boxes wasn’t all the grant money provided – Pavlik also purchased binoculars for students to observe birds from afar. Sam Skowron, a senior, said she enjoyed the binoculars more than she thought she would. “It allows us to see birds’ colors from far away and the small details,” she said. Pavlik said she was overjoyed students had knowledge they clearly took away from the experience – even if it just turned into a hobby for them. “I just love it,” Pavlik said. “This is what I’ve always dreamed – showing anyone about nature.”

On April 24, the Austintown Historical Society had its annual Spring Tea fundraiser at the Strock Stone House. AHS members and volunteers provided the refreshments, which consisted of a variety of tea sandwiches and desserts, along with a choice of teas and instant coffee. After each meal, a free tour of the newly renovated Strock Stone house was conducted by an AHS member. There was a raffle for a basket containing a variety of items, including an AHS afghan, Austintown High School Cat’s Meow, AHS mug, tea cup with saucer, teas, food items and toys. The tea was a great success having the largest attendance thus far in its history. The Austintown Historical Society wants to thank all the volunteers who helped out. The society also wants to thank the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District, who actually own the Strock Stone House building and property, for all the hard work they’ve put in this past year doing a beautiful renovation inside and out of the historic Strock Stone House.
