Austintow n Intermediate School recognized the students in fifth grade at the Fifth-Grade Farewell ceremony on May 20 at Austintown Fitch High School. This ceremony is the first time the PTA has put on the event for the students in the fifth grade. The current students who transition from second- to third-grade receive a small dedication ceremony in honor of them moving from the elementary school to the intermediate school. Before the new schools were created, the current fifth-grade students didn’t get a dedication ceremo-

ny so the PTA thought it would be a good idea to give them one as they moved onto the middle school. “We’re super excited because this is our first group that went from third, fourth and fifth in our new building,” said Crystal Lordi, part of the PTA committee who organized the event. “When they moved to the new building, some of the students never received the third grade dedication. Because they never received that event, we are coordinating our own for them in fifth grade,” said Maria Tirado, a PTA committee member who helped organized the event.

Families of the students entered the Fitch auditorium and watched as a photo slideshow played. There were pictures of all the students throughout the school year. Speakers Kathy Mock, the School Board President, and Jeremy Batchelor, assistant Superintendent, talked about the students after the slideshow ended. “The teachers picked out awards that coordinate with candy. All the kids are going to get an award that is a candy bar and get a candy with that,” said Lordi. Jennifer Ciccarelli, the 201516 AIS PTA President, called the names of the students as they

walked on stage and received their candy award. Some of the candies presented were the 100 Grand group - students who work well with numbers, the Crunch children - students who come through during crunch time, the Hershey’s students who are kind to everyone and several others. One student Emily Oleski received a special candy award of Sour Punch candy to “punch” the cancer out of it and Hershey’s kisses. After the ceremony was over, students and their families made their way to the cafeteria to enjoy snacks, refreshments, music from a DJ and a photobooth.

Local celebrities serve for a cause By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown Buffalo Wild Wings hosted the second annual Celebrity Sever Fundraiser on May 25 put on by the Austintown Night Out committee. The Night Out event is a national event that occurs on the first Tuesday of August every year. It is put on by the police departments and community block watches. The event is to let the community members know that people are looking out for their neighborhoods and taking care of them to try and make them safe for everybody. “It’s a way to bring the community together to meet the safety forces in a fun and enjoyable way, rather than meeting them in a bad way,” said Shawne Wilfong, part of the Austintown Night Out committee. This is the second year in a row the Austintown Night Out committee has hosted a Celebrity Server Fundraiser to raise money for the Night Out event. The two celebrity servers this year were former Austintown Township Trustee Lisa Oles and current Trustee Jim Davis. The celebrities would help wait tables with fellow Buffalo Wild Wing servers and have a competition to see what celebrity

would earn the most tops. Last year the fundraiser was at Pizza Hut and the celebrities were Davis and the Deanna Hosey, owner of Something Unique Florist. Guests participating in the fundraiser would print out a coupon found on the Austintown Night Out Facebook page or by emailing the Night Out committee for a coupon. Those who brought in the coupon would have 15 percent of their bill donated to the Austintown Night Out fund. Around $300 was raised in the fundraiser last year and Wilfong is hoping to raise more money this year. The more money raised will allow the Night Out event to supply

more games and activities. “This year we are going to have ‘Frozen’ characters come out and also Captain Jack Sparrow. The kids can have their pictures taken with them and maybe have a Captain Jack looka-like contest,” said Wilfong. T he fou r t h Au s t i ntow n Night Out will be on Aug. 2 at the Austintown Township Park from 5-9 p.m. and is open and free to the public. There will be games and crafts for the children to take part in. Fire trucks, police cars, ambulances and other safety force vehicles will be available for people to explore and representatives for them to talk to and learn about.

MCCTC students get down and dirty By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center hosted its fifth annual McMudder race on May 20. This end-of-the-year event features teams and individuals who run an obstacle course that is just shy of one mile and includes everything from an arctic plunge to a car push. Competitors also ran through the woods and had to maneuver

an over and under element before running through a muddy lake and then a swamp. At one point, the students who were competing as teams had to carry one team member to the next station. To end the race, the competitors had to slide through a slip and slide and then flip a truck tire to the finish line. MCCTC students have been preparing for this event for weeks. The Public Safety students were in charge of the

course and made sure everything stayed in order; MultiMedia and Visual Design students made all the signage and T-shirts; Construction students built the arctic plunge pool for the course and Auto Technology students donated a car to use in the car push. “We try to get as many MCCTC programs and students involved in the McMudder as we can. The race has doubled in size and now includes both students and teachers,” said Jes-

sica Cene, MCCTC community engagement specialist. Prizes were given for first through third place for both teams and individuals. Prizes were also given for the top four costumes, which students could vote for on social media. Matt Putzier served as McMudder coordinator. In addition to the McMudder, the school offered an end-ofthe-year picnic for all students and staff, with the help of the Culinary Program students.

Children learn about choosing a career path By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Austintown Middle School’s annual Career Day was hosted on May 20 for the students in eighth grade. The PTA at Austintown Middle School helped put Career Day together and brought in 29 presenters with different job occupations for the students to visit. The event happens every Spring to help the students prepare for their transition into high school. The Career Day is incorporated into school’s curriculum. Each of the presenters are giv-

en a classroom to set up everything they need to present to the students. The students spend a certain amount of time with each presenter before they went to another presenter’s room. Some of the presenters the PTA brought in were a surgeon, a physical therapist, an airline pilot, a dog groomer and several more. Many of the presenters prepared a PowerPoint or brought in objects pertaining to their jobs. The PTA members invite people they know who may be interested in presenting. Several of the presenters are people

who have come in the past and are willing to continue coming to help the students. “We try and get a very diversified group,” said Lynn Mickey, the PTA member who organized Career Day. The students are encouraged to dress the part, like they are going in for a job interview. Many of the students said the presenters they listen to help them become prepared for the working world.
