Boardman Park to host military bands The Green Oasis of Boardman Park will host The 122nd Ohio Army National Guard Band’s performance at Maag Theatre on June 30 beginning at 7 p.m. On July 2, the Wright Brass Air Force Band of Flight will perform at the Maag Theatre at 7 p.m. Additionally, in celebration of Independence Day, the Park will presents the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus on July 5 at 8:15 p.m. with fireworks to follow around 9:45 p.m. Rain location for the July 5 concert only will be at the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center.

Annual children’s pet show The Boardman Kiwanis Club will host its annual Children’s Pet Show on June 26 at the Boardman Township Park Maag Outdoor Arts Theatre. Children who have just completed K-6 grades are eligible to enter their pet. Categories to be judged include Purebred Dogs, Mixed Breed Dogs, Cats, Other Types of Pets, All Pets and Outstanding Pet of Show. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and the show starts 1 p.m. Children with their parents should arrive 30 minutes early in order to register their pet. Multiple trophies and certificates will be awarded. Adult supervision for all children and

Cookie is a 3-year-old orange male cat that was left in a foreclosed house. He gets along with the other cats in the shelter and is no problem at all. Cookie is a nice cat that would surely make someone very happy. The shelter is not sure how he would react around dogs and children, but he seems pretty mellow so he may do great with children. New threater camp to begin July 11 Camp Show Biz!, a new “all around” theatre camp for students in grades K-12 will host its first four week session, Mondays through Thursdays, July 11 until Aug. 5 at Trinity Fellowship Church, located at 4749 South Ave. in Boardman, from 9 a,m. until 1 p.m. Campers will be led through the entire experience of creating and producing a show “from auditions to opening night.” Classes will include acting, movement, voice, marketing and theatre games, as well as set construction, lighting, sound design and make up. The experience will culminate in a performance for parents and invited guests on the last day. Instructors for Camp Show Biz! are local theatre artists and drama teachers. The cost for the camp is $130, which includes a daily lunch. Some scholarship assistance is available for qualified applicants. All campers will be offered roles in the Kids’ First Theatre Initiative production of “The Wizard of Oz” in October. The organization recently hosted a vocal competition, The Mahoning Valley Singing Star, Jr. and will shortly unveil plans for upcoming performance opportunities and classes for young people interested in theatre. Kennedy Furano is a seventhgrade student at Glenwood Middle School. Furano has been on the Relay for Life committee ever since she was in kindergarten. Furano’s family has had a concession stand at Boardman Relay for about 10 years that she has helped run. This year, Furano decided she wanted to have her own stand at Relay. Furano came up with the idea Kennedy’s Crepes after going to the strip district in Pittsburgh on a Saturday. At the strip district, Furano saw a crepe station set up and immediately said, “I can do this!” Furano has been making crepes ever since. In just two hours at the Relay, Furano raised more than $200 that she donated to her friend’s Relay Team. Furano would like to

continue her crepe stand at the Boardman Relay for Life for the years to come. Furano also said that she would like to expand her crepe stand to places outside of the Relay. She wants to start setting up her stand at places like local markets, crafts shows, etc. With the money Furano raises she wants to be able to save enough to buy a fishing boat, as fishing is of her passions. Kennedy’s Crepes is a something Furano is passionate about. She loves making the batter from scratch, using her crepe machine to cook them and then assembling them with fruit and other fillings and toppings. “I think she likes the idea that she thought about this on her own and it’s not a business that ever yone has to offer,” Neighbors | Submitted said Furano’s mother, Sandy Kennedy Furano stood with one of her customers from Kennedy’s Crepes Furano. during the Boardman Relay for Life on May 13 and 14.

Boardman School Board approves new Director of Operations On May 23, the Boardman School Board unanimously approved longtime Boardman Coordinator of Special Education and Student Services Jack Zocolo as Boardman School District’s new Director of Operations. He will fill the position vacated by Tim Saxton, when Saxton becomes Boardman Superintendent on Aug. 1. Director of Operations is a crucial part of the Administrative Team in Boardman. The Operations Director is responsible for the safety and security of the district, overseeing maintenance and building, food service and transportation. The district spent the past month reviewing resumes from more than 20 applicants from Cleveland to New York City. Experience ranged from building administrators to current and former superintendents. Zocolo’s career in education started in Portsmouth, Ohio in 1985, then onto Western Reserve Local in 1989, Mahoning County Educational Service

Center in 1991, Westerville City in 1995 and eventually landed in Boardman as Coordinator of Special Education in 1996. “Jack’s organizational skills, attention to detail and strong work ethic will greatly add to his success as he enters this new area of administration,” said incoming Superintendent Tim Saxton. Zocolo resides in Boardman with his wife, Jacqui, a 1981 Boardman graduate. His children both graduated from Boa rd ma n Schools, Ch loe (2010) and Dominic (2013). “I a m bot h honored a nd humbled in the confidence the Board of Education and district staff have had in my job performance and knowledge during my 19 years as a District Administrator for Special Education,” Zocolo said. “My job has given me many cherished memories working with our district families of students with disabilities. I hope that I have made a difference in guiding our district in meeting the educational needs of our special education stu-

BHS orchestras recognized

The Boardman High School Orchestras were awarded top honors at the Fiesta-Val National Music Competition in Nashville, Tenn. The Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra participated in this event. Both orchestras received a “Superior” rating for division 6, while the Symphony Orchestra also received an additional “Superior” rating in division 5. Divisions 5 and 6 indicate the two most difficult levels of music in the competition. The judges also awarded special “Adjudicator Recognition” trophies to violinists Julian Reyes and Adam Zocolo as well as cello soloist Simon Pusateri. The Orchestra program in Boardman Schools is taught by Michele Prokop, Bill Amendol and Tim Tuite. The senior class is pictured here.

Boardman High School art students hosted their 64th annual art show on May 19 and 20 at Boardman High School. The students have been working on their projects all year to put on display for friends and family to see. The art department consists of six teachers, four in fine arts, one for metal shop and one for wood shop. Alyssa Birch is the department chair and photographer teacher. For the last two years, guests and students have voted for different projects to be a part of the Top 30 out of all of the projects. Those 30 projects then get photographed and hung up. “It’s a combination of graphics, photography, studio art and wood shop. It’s a combination of everything all of the classes have done all year, freshmen through seniors,” said Kate Johnson, a visual arts teacher. More than 400 people attended the open house on May 19 to look at the student’s artwork and vote for the Top 30. Local athlete shows off skills in Rome You ngstow n a nd Boa rdman native Michael Mannozzi earned his ticket to Rome to compete in the World Race Walking Team Championships on Feb. 21 in Santee, Calif. when he finished third at the USA Track and Field Olympic Trials for the 50k Race Walk, bettering the qualifying time of 4 hours and 35 minutes. This was Mannozzi’s fifth time donning the red, white a nd blue a s a member of the USA National team. The trip was also something of a homecoming for Mannozzi as his family emigrated from Le Marche, Italy. One of his highlights was a visit to Ristorante Mannozzi in Rome, a restaurant owned by distant cousins. Ma nnozzi a nd his tea mmates were also part of a Papal Audience during their visit

to the Vatican. Mannozzi was one 21 Americans named to the USA Team, and one of t wo from Ohio. Five races took place over the weekend of May 7-8 involving the best race walkers in the world. Five Americans represented the USA in the 50k (31.1 miles) race. This marked the first time a woman competed at the 50k in a worldwide competition. Erin Taylor-Talcott of Owego, N.Y. has been pushing for gender parity in race walking. The 50k is still a men-only event at the World Track and Field Championships and Olympic Games. T he 50k e vent i nclude d mu lt iple world a nd Oly mpic Champions within the 65 starters. The event started in front of the Arch of Alexander and finished in a track sta-

dium named Terme di Caracalla. This event was the final opportunity for Nick Christie (El Cajon, Calif.) and Mannozzi to chase the Olympic qualifying standard. Christie was on pace through 30K, before slowing with stomach issues. He finished 35th in a time of 4:24.55 and was followed by Steven Washburn (a dual citizen from Sydney, Australia) in 4:28.20 and 36th place. Mannozzi was 37th, overall, and the third American and final point scorer for the US team in 4:39.33. Taylor-Talcott finished 40th in 4:51.08 and Ian Whatley of Greer, S.C., the eldest competitor in the competition, suffered a disqualification on his 56th birthday. The USA 50k team finished seventh in the World. Mannozzi will also compete

at the 20K Olympic Trials in Salem, Ore. on June 30. Mannozzi is grateful to his many sponsors and supporters who have helped his athletic progress. Boardman Park hosted the 12th biannual Baby Bargain Boutique on May 21. The Baby Bargain Boutique is put on twice a year, in the spring and fall, at Boardman Park for families to buy and sell gently used items. There were 150 different moms selling to moms, there weren’t any

commercial vendors. “It’s a great way to find good deals and support other moms in the community,” said Karen McCallum, Boardman Park’s Recreation Director. Many people come out, rain or shine, to look for deals. More than 2,000 people attended the four hour event to bargain shop for themselves and for others. There are several vendors who continue to come back year af-

ter year to shop and sell. Aaron and Michelle Dellorco attend the event in both spring and fall and usually set up two spots to sell items. This is their fifth year and are looking forward to keep coming to the event for years to follow. “People get good deals. I feel better about selling my stuff, it benefits us, it benefits people who are shopping. I shop here as well,” said Michelle Dellor-

co. W hi le some people have been coming for years, this is only the first or second time for many vendors. This is the second Baby Bargain Boutique Jenny Arnaut has set up a stand to sell items. Her first time was in October and she is planning on continuing to come again. The next Baby Bargain Boutique will be at Boardman Park on Sept. 24.

Ashley Orr of Youngstown and Daniel Catello of Kent, Ohio, are engaged and planning to be married. Their parents are announcing their engagement. Her mother is Cara Burt-Orr of Columbiana, and his parents are Wayne Catello of Kinsman and Diane and Michael Jordon of Austintown. The couple are planning a July wedding at Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Columbiana. Invitations will be issued. The bride-elect graduated from Youngstown State University recently with bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and economics. She will pursue a degree in economics at the University of Oxford in London, England, as a Rhodes scholar. The prospective groom graduated from YSU with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics. He is employed as an actuarial analyst for National Interstate Insurance.
