HONEY
Shelby was found as a stray in Canfield and she is just too wonderful to be left outside. She turned 3 on Jan. 1. She is a beautiful Calico. Shelby does get along with the other cats at the shelter. She seems to really love children and is very gentle and kind. The shelter doesn’t knowhow she would feel about dogs. Visit West Side Cats to see if you would be a great “furrever” match for Shelby.
A foster home is needed for Honey immediately. She is shutting down and needs out of the shelter ASAP. If anyone has any room in their home, contact the Pawz 2 Adopt Facebook page. She is about 4-years-old and 35 pounds. She seems a little dog selective at first, but once she gets to know them she seems fine. No cats. Her best friends at the shelter got adopted, and now she is very unhappy. She sits in her kennel and shakes, and is breaking hearts at the shelter. She is housebroken. Please share this information with anyone you think could foster her, or share the post that can be found on any of the Neighbors Facebook pages.

Run to raise autism awareness By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The third annual Valley Autism Walk took place on June 4 at Austintown Township Park, hosted by the Autism Society. The Autism Walk was divided into three different walks and runs. The first run was a Kids Fun Run in which the children had the opportunity to participate in their own short run. The second was the 5k run around the park, and the final one was a Big Family Fun Walk for large families or groups to participate in. Several groups attended the Autism Walk in matching shirts they created in support of those who have autism. Some of the groups who made matching shirts were small families, while others were a large group of people who were friends, family or coworkers. “It’s a great opportunity for the whole community to gather
and raise awareness about autism and what it’s like for families to live with a diagnosis,” said Aundrea Cika, an Autism Society board member. A DJ, petting zoo, bounce houses and food trucks were available for people who attended the Autism Walk. “The Autism Society is an umbrella organization for all things autism. We deal with families at Rich and Easter Seal and public schools. You don’t have to be in an autism school to be involved with us. We are a source of information,” said Cika. People were able to pre-register for the walk or register before the walk started. “This is my first year doing this. We just recently got involved with the Autism Society and the social group my son participates in,” said Tina Davis. B.J. Alan, Davis’ place of employment, was one of the sponsors of the Autism Walk. Children recycle to make blooming bouquets By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Peg Flynn from the Mahoning Valley Green Team visited the Austintown library on June 6 to read a book and prepare an activity for the children. Flynn read the book “Recycle Every Day!” by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. The book is about a rabbit named Minna who prepares a poster about recycling every day. Wallace made the book out of recycled materials like bubble wrap, envelopes and
wallpaper. When Flynn finished reading the book, she taught the children how to make a flower bouquet with supplies that Flynn provided. The supplies were materials that could be found around the house like a Styrofoam egg carton, coffee filters and pipe cleaners. Each of the children had three cut out egg cartons to make the flowers, three pipe cleaners for the stems, a coffee filter to put the flowers through and a ribbon to tie them all together.

Peg Flynn of the Green Team read the book “Recycle Every Day!” to children at the Austintown library on June 6.
“We’re doing ‘Recycle Every Day!,’ then we are making a craft and they’re getting an activity book they can take home that’s about the environment,” said Flynn. This event was part of the Summer Discovery Summer reading program. Children who enroll in the program earn badges, and for every so many
badges, the children get to pick out different prizes. The Summer Discovery program runs from June 1 until Aug. 31 and is open to children and adults. Flynn and her coworker, Kim Lewis, will be going to several libraries in Mahoning County throughout the summer to continue to give the presentation on recycling.
