A foster home is needed for Honey immediately. She is shutting down and needs out of the shelter ASAP. If anyone has any room in their home, contact the Pawz 2 Adopt Facebook page. She is about 4-years-old and 35 pounds. She seems a little dog selective at first, but once she gets to know them she seems fine. No cats. Her best friends at the shelter got adopted, and now she is very unhappy. She sits in her kennel and shakes, and is breaking hearts at the shelter. She is housebroken. Please share this information with anyone you think could foster her, or share the post that can be found on any of the Neighbors Facebook pages.

Shelby was found as a stray in Canfield and she is just too wonderful to be left outside. She turned 3 on Jan. 1. She is a beautiful Calico. Shelby does get along with the other cats at the shelter. She seems to really love children and is very gentle and kind. The shelter doesn’t knowhow she would feel about dogs. Visit West Side Cats to see if you would be a great “furrever” match for Shelby.

One of the favorite letter assignments dealt with the book and movie “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.” The fourth-grade students took a picture of themselves and put it on a penguin’s body for t he second-grade students to see what they look like. “When we wrote about what we did with ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins,’ we had to send them a picture of us for them to see what we look like. When the students finished bowling, they had pizza and cookies before they went back to school. MCCTC Students get down and dirty By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center hosted its fifth annual McMudder race on May 20. This end-of-the-year event features teams and individuals who run an obstacle course that is just shy of one mile and includes everything from an arctic plunge to a car push. Competitors also ran through the woods and had to maneuver an over and under element before running through a muddy lake and then a swamp. At one point, the students who were competing as teams had to carry one team member to the next station. To end the race, the competitors had to slide through a slip and slide and then flip a truck tire to the finish line. MCCTC students have been preparing for this event for weeks. The Public Safety students were in charge of the

course and made sure everything stayed in order; MultiMedia and Visual Design students made all the signage and T-shirts; Construction students built the arctic plunge pool for the course and Auto Technology students donated a car to use in the car push. “We try to get as many MCCTC programs and students involved in the McMudder as we can. The race has doubled in size and now includes both students and teachers,” said Jessica Cene, MCCTC community engagement specialist. Prizes were given for first through third place for both teams and individuals. Prizes were also given for the top four costumes, which students could vote for on social media. Matt Putzier served as McMudder coordinator. In addition to the McMudder, the school offered an end-ofthe-year picnic for all students and staff, with the help of the Culinary Program students.

Students sing in honor of military members By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The kindergarten classes at Stadium Drive Elementary put on a Memorial Day program for their families and other guests on May 27. The name of the program was “We Love the USA.” The students wore blue bottoms and a red, white or some type of patriotic top. The performance consisted of the students reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing several patriotic songs. At the end of the performance, the guests who have served or are currently serving in the military were asked to stand. Several of the guests stood and received a round of applause. To finish the program, the students left the stage and sat to watch the video that was put together. The video consisted of pictures of the students’ family members who served in the military, what branch and what years they served. Tami Socie, Candace Fabry and Emily McFarland, the three kindergarten teachers, worked with their students for all of May to practice for their program to make it the best they could. The program was put on to celebrate Memorial Day. The students and teachers wanted to honor the holiday and show their respect for those in the military.
