HONEY

Shelby was found as a stray in Canfield and she is just too wonderful to be left outside. She turned 3 on Jan. 1. She is a beautiful Calico. Shelby does get along with the other cats at the shelter. She seems to really love children and is very gentle and kind. The shelter doesn’t knowhow she would feel about dogs. Visit West Side Cats to see if you would be a great “furrever” match for Shelby.

A foster home is needed for Honey immediately. She is shutting down and needs out of the shelter ASAP. If anyone has any room in their home, contact the Pawz 2 Adopt Facebook page. She is about 4-years-old and 35 pounds. She seems a little dog selective at first, but once she gets to know them she seems fine. No cats. Her best friends at the shelter got adopted, and now she is very unhappy. She sits in her kennel and shakes, and is breaking hearts at the shelter. She is housebroken. Please share this information with anyone you think could foster her, or share the post that can be found on any of the Neighbors Facebook pages.

Hilltop fourth-graders experiment with science By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Hilltop Elementary School fourth-grade students put on their proverbial white lab coats as they prepared their experiments for the school’s annual Science Fair on May 27. The students put their experiments and results on display for family, friends and fellow Hilltoppers in the school’s gymnasium. The students worked on their projects and were guided stepby-step by their fourth-grade teachers.

Each student was required to conduct a scientific experiment on a topic that interested them and were then asked to create a display board describing their experiment. Each display included the project’s problem to be solved, the student’s hypothesis, the materials used, the procedure of the experiment, the results and a conclusion in which the student stated if the hypothesis was correct or incorrect and what he or she had learned from the experiment. Students could also include

photos of themselves conducting their experiment, charts, diagrams, illustrations, histograms and graphs on their displays. Several also had handson demonstrations. The students stood by their display boards in the gym and were available to explain their projects to attendees and fellow students, and answer any questions they may have had concerning their topics. The fourth-graders chose a variety of topics, such as: “What keeps apples from browning?,” “Which boils faster - hot water

or cold water?,” “Which type of chocolate melts faster?,” “Which type of pop is most damaging to teeth?,” “Does bread mold faster on the counter or in the refrigerator?,” “Which M&M color melts fastest in the microwave?,” “Does pasta cook faster with salt?,” “Which stain remover works best?,” and “Which solution makes the biggest bubble?” Each student received a red participant ribbon from their teacher to hang on their display boards and take home as a souvenir from the science fair.

C.H. Campbell Elementary School fourth-graders, under the direction of music specialist Michael Fay, presented “Destination: America! An Evening of Art and Music” by John Jacobson and Roger Emerson on May 24. Friends and family members gathered at the Canfield High School auditorium to enjoy music from around America, including rock and roll, country, Broadway and Motown.

Fay welcomed the large audience to the show. “Good evening. Welcome to our performance of “Destination: America!” The students are very excited to show you all what they have been working so hard on. We know you all have busy schedules and it’s a busy time of the year so we are very happy you are here. We have many people to thank for making this evening possible, but I would really like to highlight the parents who helped with the set decora-

tions. They are really amazing. And lastly, I would like to thank you for allowing me to work with your children. They are a blessing,” Fay said. The students began their program with “Destination: America!” and then moved onto “Hitsville, U.S.A.” The next song the students performed was “(That’s Why) They Call it Country,” with students line dancing. The fourth number the students performed was “Go, Go, Go Guitars” with glam rock dancers. “All Aboard for Broadway” was next in the program. The students then performed “It’s American as Rock N Roll.” The students closed their show with “Reprise: Destination: America!,” during which the students came out into the audience and sang in the aisles.

The students’ featured art work, “The Altered Book Project 2015-16,” was displayed in the cafeteria. C.H Campbell art teacher Diane Leonard organized the art portion of the evening. For the project, the fourthgraders used old and discarded text books, and upscaled old books into art journals with a theme of All About Me. Some of the pages in the art journals offered visual representatives of their lives and included, The Mica Hand - An Ohio Artifact Page, Our Future Colored Bubbles Pages, Woven Through Our Lives Pages, Cardinal Pages, Stamped Into Our Hearts Pages, Watercolor Secrets Pages, But Wait - Let me Take a Selfie Page, QR Code Pages and A Page a Day.

Kennsington Golf Club names worldranked long driver as Director of Golf Jeff Crittenden, a PGA professional and world-ranked long driver, joined Kennsington Golf Club as Director of Golf on June 15. Crittenden comes to the course from North Carolina Golf Academy, where he was owner and Director of Instruction. “I look forward to bringing a new and entertaining approach to golf,” Crittenden said. “Kennsington is an impressive course. I have a lot of plans for the golf club, which I’m excited to unravel.” For nearly a decade, Crittenden (a Pennsylvania native) has

done exhibitions all over the world and now finds himself in Ohio where he’ll add the Canfield course to his long list of credentials. Crittenden’s resume notably includes teaching at Swings the Thing Golf Schools, Grand Cypress Academy of Golf, Precision Golf Schools, ESPN Golf Schools and Golf Digest Golf Schools. He is also well known for his long drive, which has earned him several awards and recognitions plus a top-five world ranking. He recently finished fifth in the 2015 World Long Drive Championship and sec-

Joyce and Loran Brooks will serve as Grand Marshal in the 2016 July 4th parade in Canfield.

Canfield 4th of July Committee announces 2016 Grand Marshal The Canfield 4th of July Committee recently announced that the 2016 Parade Grand Marshal is actually a couple who have spent a lifetime in community service in Canfield. Joyce and Loran Brooks celebrated 58 years of marriage on June 15, but their extensive influence in Canfield and Mahoning County began long before they met. Dr. Joyce Brooks spent her early years in Austintown and has been an active member of the Austintown Community Church. Joyce began attending Canfield schools her freshman year of high school and, in addition to her academic growth, marched as a majorette in the high school band under the direction of Paul Rossi. Joyce began her education career just two weeks after her high school graduation in 1957 when she was hired as an elementary teacher in Greenford. She continued her education at Youngstown University’s College of Education. She earned her BS in Education, went on to complete an MS in Education and received an Honorary PhD in Humane Letters. She is a lifetime member of the YSU Alumni Society and Pete’s Pride and is an active supporter of the YSU Foundation. Loran Brooks can trace his roots in Canfield to his grandfather, Henry Brooks. Loran and his family were members of the Canfield Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Canfield High School in 1956.

Following high school, he attended Youngstown University’s College of Engineering, studying Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering. His career took him to the Research and Development Department of Youngstown Sheet & Tube, where he worked for 11 years, until the closing of Sheet & Tube in 1977. Loran’s second, part-time career as a farmer became his full-time career once the mill closed. He was a strong supporter of the vocational school, believing that it should not only provide vocational education but also offer advanced courses for students from small districts that couldn’t offer those courses, such as physics. He was actively involved in the Mahoning County Career and Techincal Center. A particular point of pride was when MCCTC’s Conference Room was named the “Joyce E. Brooks Conference Center” in honor of his wife in 2008. Loran and Joyce represent the Canfield community on regional, state and national levels. Loran chairs the Canfield Township Zoning Board of Appeals. Joyce has been a member of the New Canfield Library Steering Committee and a member and past president of the Canfield Republican Women’s Club. They both have strong ties to the Canfield Fair. The couple’s extensive list of accolades goes far beyond what is mentioned here, making them the perfect candidates for Grand Marshal.
