LEAH
Melody was found on the street in Youngstown. Melody does not like other cats or dogs, but she does, however, love children. She is a sweet girl who enjoys cuddling. She is a beautiful Calico and is approximately 2 1/2 years-old. She was born on Jan. 1, 2014. Stop by the shelter to visit Melody. It is imperative that your household be cat and dog free for this adoption to work.
Leah is getting worried that she may never get out of the shelter. She is sweet and lovable, and she is said to be good with cats. She seems to do well with other dogs and loves people. She would love to have a nice yard to run and play in. If you have a resident dog, please bring them to the shelter or make arrangements for a home visit. Leah is patiently waiting for her chance at a better life. Message Pawz 2 Adopt on Facebook if you can give that to her.

Children leap into learning By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Mill Creek MetroPark hosted a Life In and Around the Pond event on June 10 at the Birch Hill Cabin. Hillary Lenton and Julie Bartolone, naturalists at Mill Creek MetroParks, gave a lesson to 2and 3-year-old children who attended the event. The children learned about creatures that are found in and around a pond.
“We try to stick to what’s going on that month and who we might see outside,” said Lenton in regards to how they pick the topics of the programs. The event started out with a coloring sheet until all of the children arrived. W hen the children finished coloring, Lenton read a book about different creatures they might find in a pond. Lenton used hand puppets along with the story to show the children what the creatures
look like. After Lenton finished the story, the children pretended to be tadpoles and jumped up and down while Bartolone laid out lily pads for the next activity. The lily pads got laid on the ground and the children took turns being frogs and jumping from one lily pad to another. The next activity was craft time and the children made See POND, Page 5

frogs out of paper plates, construction paper, googly eyes and glue. The children could color the plate however they wanted, then glue on the frog parts made of paper. The final step was to add eyes and the frog would be complete. The last part of the event was when the children walked around the Lily Bond outside of Birch Hill Cabin. Lenton and Bartolone led the children in hopes of searching for some of the creatures they learned about. The children saw different kinds of frogs, turtles, fish and many others. There were also turtle nests with a few of the egg shells the children could see up close. Lenton brought out a machine that made frog noises to try and attract some frogs for the children to see. One of the frogs the children saw was a green frog and Lenton demonstrated the sound a green frog makes. The next children’s program will be on July 15 and it will be a special night time program. The children will learn about fireflies and make s’mores.

entered in the chance to win a door prize. “This is our first time, it’s a huge success. The people love it, they’re all wearing black dresses,” said Liptak. Three boutiques set up tables for the guests to visit and shop. E.J. Hannah, Suzanne’s and Ivory and Birch offered to give 10 percent of the money they raised to the literary society. A few of the women who attended the event wore dresses from the vendors to do some “informal modeling.” Liptak thought of the idea in January and the Literary Society started planning for the fundraiser at the end of winter. The money for the Literary Society is used for the famous authors the libraries bring in as guests. “We’re so excited to see the support of the literacy for the library,” said Liptak.

Dogs and owners learn freestyle dancing at the park By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
MetroMutts of Mill Creek MetroParks hosted a Dancing with your Dog event on June 15 at the Slippery Rock Pavilion. Katie Costello, owner of The Learning Dog, taught guests and their dogs Canine freestyle. Canine freestyle dancing is a choreographed performance that is organized with music. The choreography the dogs are taught is based off basic train-
ing the dogs have previously learned. Julie Bartolone, the MetroMutts organizer, puts together several events for dogs and their owners throughout the year. They go on hikes, dog dance, dog art and many more activities that incorporates both human and dog. This was the first time Bartolone organized a Dancing with your Dog event. The Learning Dog works with Bartolone and
MetroMutts to put on several of the activities that are planned for the year. Dancing with your Dog was free for MetroMutts members, but non-members paid a small fee to attend. Costello started out the class by teaching the dogs and their owners small parts one at a time before putting anything together. Once the dogs got the hang of the steps, the pieces were slowly combined until each separate step was turned into one dance.
Costello turned on music and the dog and human pairs demonstrated the choreography with the music. “We try to do new things, this is a new thing. After, I’ll talk to Katie and ask ‘what can we do?’ to see how we can make it better,” said Bartolone.

MetroMutts is always welcoming new members to join them on their hikes and other activities. Those interested in joining the group can visit the Mill Creek MetroParks website to find more information on the different activities and how to join.
