LEAH
Melody was found on the street in Youngstown. Melody does not like other cats or dogs, but she does, however, love children. She is a sweet girl who enjoys cuddling. She is a beautiful Calico and is approximately 2 1/2 years-old. She was born on Jan. 1, 2014. Stop by the shelter to visit Melody. It is imperative that your household be cat and dog free for this adoption to work.
Leah is getting worried that she may never get out of the shelter. She is sweet and lovable, and she is said to be good with cats. She seems to do well with other dogs and loves people. She would love to have a nice yard to run and play in. If you have a resident dog, please bring them to the shelter or make arrangements for a home visit. Leah is patiently waiting for her chance at a better life. Message Pawz 2 Adopt on Facebook if you can give that to her.

Community comes together to celebrate Boardman By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Boardman hosted the annual Boardman Township Community Day on June 4 at the Boardman Township Building and the Boardman Park Stables. The Boardman Township Board of Trustees worked with Boardman Park to create an event for community members to enjoy and to celebrate their city. Community Day has been offered for more than seven years and businesses from all around Boardman pitch in to provide their services. Community Day is a free event for community members. Handel’s provided ice cream, Southgate Pizza provided pizza, Hitchcock Woods donated popcorn and Aqua Ohio provided drinks and hot dogs. There was also an inflatable slide and a bouncy
house for the children to play in. “Everything has been donated or through donations from when we seize assests,” said Jason Loree, a township administrator. Girl Scouts, Boardman Soccer League, the Boardman Lions Club and several other non-profits in Boardman set up tables for the guests to visit and get information from. The sheriffs provided Kids Identi-kits for families who wanted to get one for their child. Boardman High School Key Club members helped served the food and the National Fire and Water Repair representatives grilled all of the hot dogs on his truck. The Police Department, Fire Department, Boardman Local Schools and other community services brought in vehicles for the families to go and explore the inside. The 4H club of Board-

“It’s one of those days where we celebrate Boardman and we show off what we have here in the community that keeps everybody safe. It’s a fun event for families,” said Loree.

Glenwood Middle teachers Scott Lenhart and Laura Kibby were recipients of grants from the Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence.
Teachers put Excellence Foundation grants to work In the final two weeks of the school year, Boardman teachers who won grants from the Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence want to show how those grants were put to work in the classroom. Six teacher mini-grants were awarded in the fall, each project capped at $1,500. Perhaps the most visible project was Glenwood Middle School’s Blooming Biomes for Sprouting Skills. Teachers
Scott Lenhart and Laura Kibby used their $1,500 dollar grant to create a hydroponic gardening system for eighth-grade students. In the past two months t hey have g row n peppers, green beans and lettuce from seeds and engineered a “TomatoSphere” project using some seeds that had literally been in outer space. Students will investigate the effects of the space environment on the growth of the seeds and neither the stu-
dents nor the teachers will know which seeds have been in space, until they submit their results. Stadium Drive kindergarten teacher Tamie Socie explained that the new iPad Minis and docking station she purchased through the BSFEE grant, have been a powerful educational tool in her class. Students rotate through small groups using apps such as Teach Me Kindergarten, RAZ Kids and Sight Word apps to improve reading
skills. Stadium Drive second-grade teacher Jessica Meli purchased six iPod Touch 16GB MP3 players for her students to listen to stories in the Daily Five. The Daily Five is a research based program that enhances student’s fluency and comprehension skills. When students finish listening to their stories, they take a comprehension test on the Accelerated Reader App on the iPod.

They also have the opportunity to listen to noted authors of some of the books they have read as well as attend dramatic and artistic performances. All of the students participated in fun day and wore different colored shirts to represent what grade they were in. Half of the school comes outside in the morning while the other half stays in the classrooms to watch a movie and eat popcorn. The classes switch in the afternoon so everyone had a chance to play outside and watch a movie. “I try to think of different events. We have ‘Hungry, Hungry Hippos,’ ‘Ker Plunk,’ an inflatable relay race and kangaroo hops,” said Nicole Haggerty, a teacher at Robinwood and the PTA member who organized fun day. Haggerty puts the fun days together and has been doing so for seven years. She has certain activities that are put on every
year, but she also tries to bring in new ones the students will enjoy. The dunk tank was a big hit among the students. Fourthgrade students from each class volunteer to go in the dunk tank and have their classmates try to dunk them. Don Robinson, the principal at Robinwood, also sat in the dunk tank and gave the students a chance to dunk him. Many of the volunteers who help with the fun day events are PTA members and parents of the students. The volunteers are there to help run the different games and watch over the students. “These kids love the cups that you stack and they love the sidewalk chalk. When you’re looking for a filler that’s always nice,” said Haggerty. This was the last fun day the fourth-graders will have at Robinwood Lane before they transition to Boardman Center Intermediate School for fifth grade. This group of fourth-graders will be the first group to go to the new intermediate school.

Customers give furniture a new home By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Home Again Consignment store in Boardman is a family owned and operated business that opened in 2012. Larry Deckant first opened the store in 2012 as South Avenue Flea Market. Deckant’s daughter, Sophia DeRobbio, joined her father shortly after the f lea market was opened and turned South Avenue Flea Market into Home Again Consignment. Noticing that the smaller items weren’t selling well, DeRobbio started bringing in furniture and arranging room setups which brought in more customers. “It started taking off so we do consignment now. It’s great for families are starting out, who just had a baby or just got married who can’t go buy new. They can come here and get really nice stuff for cheap,” said DeRobbio. It’s an opportunity for people to earn a little extra income for those who want to sell their items, Home Again offers a 50/50 consignment rate. Items that come in range from one of a kind antiques to nickel-dime items and is constantly changing. Home Again offers layaway and delivery as an option when purchasing items. “We are going to do repurposing workshops, stuff that everybody has at home, where

we can redo different items and make them look cooler,” said DeRobbio. Customers w i l l have t he opportunit y to pa rticipate in workshops that DeRobbio is going to start doing once a month. For a small fee, people can sign up and bring in their own items they want to transform into something else. DeRobbio set the store up so that customers can get an idea of what different pieces of furniture look like as a set. Each part of the store is separated in different sections like the kitchen area, bedroom area,
living room area and more. Home Again Consignment is starting to introduce several new amenities for their customers. There is a new Ruff Room, a tent sale is being planned for July 22-24 and a Wish List is available for those who are looking for an item, but can’t find it.
