LEAH

Melody was found on the street in Youngstown. Melody does not like other cats or dogs, but she does, however, love children. She is a sweet girl who enjoys cuddling. She is a beautiful Calico and is approximately 2 1/2 years-old. She was born on Jan. 1, 2014. Stop by the shelter to visit Melody. It is imperative that your household be cat and dog free for this adoption to work.

Leah is getting worried that she may never get out of the shelter. She is sweet and lovable, and she is said to be good with cats. She seems to do well with other dogs and loves people. She would love to have a nice yard to run and play in. If you have a resident dog, please bring them to the shelter or make arrangements for a home visit. Leah is patiently waiting for her chance at a better life. Message Pawz 2 Adopt on Facebook if you can give that to her.

CHS students pitch it to win it By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

After Canfield High School students in Sherry Creighton’s Introduction to Business course completed their Shark Tank presentations on Jan. 8, Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley offered them another competition to pitch their products. During the course, the students had been learning about entrepreneurship through the Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley JA Be Entrepreneurial program. The Junior Achievement Quick Pitch Competition, in which the students “Pitch it to Win it,” was open to all students in the course and gave the students a chance to make a one-minute

video to pitch their product. The videos were then posted online where they could be viewed and viewers could vote for their favorite. Students competed for the Best Product Idea and Best Pitch. When the final votes were tallied, the Best Product Idea went to the Easy Strainer, pitched by Anthony Longo, Alyssa Cross and Lauren Slanker. The Best Video Pitch Presentation went to the Can Closer, pitched by Ryan Teminsky, Tyler Lantz and Pat Colonna. The students were recognized at the monthly Canfield Local Schools Board Meeting on May 18. Michele Merkel, president of Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, was also on hand to congratulate the students and

present them with their winnings. “T he goa l of t he Ju n ior Achievement of Mahoning Valley JA Be Entrepreneurial is to teach through experience. Our program gives them the knowledge of the skills they need to be successful in business. It is a partnership with educators where everyone benefits,” Merkel said. Members of the School Board also joined Merkel and Creighton in recognizing Kaci Carpenter and Rick Salmen for their work with the Canfield High School’s Cardinal Café. With money raised from a donation from Grange Insurance, the café, which has a physical location in the high school, was able to buy a coffee machine, table-

top refrigerator, grinder, a chest freezer and a Square System for their iPad to be able to accept Apple Pay and credit cards. “It’s amazing how far the Cardinal Café has come. The students have been very involved and are excited to see where the café is today. They have done a wonderful job,” Creighton said. The JA Be Entrepreneurial program introduces students to the essential elements of a practical business plan and challenges them to start an entrepreneurial venture while still in high school. Students learn about advertising, competitive advantages, financing, marketing and product development with local business mentors teaching the Junior Achievement lessons.

CHC kindergartners go back to the barnyard By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

C.H. Campbell Elementary School kindergarten students of presented “E-I-E-I Oops!” for family and friends at the Canfield High School auditorium on May 23. Michael Fay, C.H. Campbell music specialist, directed the students in this musical play for young voices by John Jacobson and John Higgins. The play opens in the barnyard of Farmer MacDonald and the whole barnyard is singing, including roosters, mules, chicks, pigs and sheep. But the cow cannot moo. The pigs, chicks and sheep all chime in to give suggestions, but Mr. Mule is the one who finds the secret to the cow’s silence. All the animals do their part to save the day. The play is an example of friendship, self esteem and confidence. The students opened the show with “E-I-E-I Oops!” and moved into “Ham it Up,” with a focus on the students portraying pigs.

C.H. Campbell Elementary School kindergartners, under the direction of Michael Fay, ran through their performance of “E-I-E-I Oops!” for fellow C.H. students before they performed it on stage at the Canfield High School on May 23.

The students told pig jokes and sang short solos. The next song was “Lost Sheep” featuring three sheep and Little Bo Peep. “Cute Chicks” was then performed with the spotlight on students dressed as chicks. The students closed their show with “The Whole Barn-

yard is Singin’,” with focus on all the animals helping the cow finally moo, much to the delight of their audience and barnyard animals alike. “This play is a wonderful example of friendship, self-esteem and confidence,” said Travis Lavery, C.H. Campbell Elementary School principal.

Fifth-graders compete in Field Day Fifth-grade students at Canfield Village Middle School were fired up and ready to play some games at the school’s annual Field Day on May 27. With the students split up into nine teams competing against each other, physical education teachers Bob Tinkey and Caitlyn Carver had several games and relays organized for the

students. Carver kept score throughout the competition to determine the winning team. Each team was assigned a team color and team members wore that color T-shirts to show team unity. Teams were split into boys and girls and then Tinkey had the students participate in such games as the over-the-shoulder ball toss, hula hoop relay, scoop ball relay, ball under the chin

relay, ball between knees relay, wall toss, and finally, tug-ofwar. After the final scores were tallied, Tinkey counted down where each team placed, pausing for cheers from each class. He finally declared Valerie Weingart’s team the champion, with the announcement barely audible above the cheers from the students who were ecstatic about their first place win.

art teachers at CVMS and Diane Leonard is the elementary art teacher at both Hilltop Elementary and C.H. Campbell Elementary. Best of show winner Brown, a junior, won with her self portrait oil painting assigned in her Advanced Art class taught by Hoopes. “I was pretty surprised I won Best of Show. Art is kind of a hobby for me. I like to be creative and make sculptures, too. I really enjoy Mr. Hoopes as an art teacher and he inspires us all,” Brown said. First runner up W histler placed with her pastel still life “Road Kill” assigned in her Advanced Art class taught by Hoopes. “The name of my piece is meant to portray the hazards of life and traveling on the road and reminding people to watch their speed. It is a direct obser-

vation. I want people to look at it and feel it,” Whistler said. Whistler’s piece also won a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and placed first in pastels at the Mahoning County Schools Annual Art Show. “Art is an excelling point for me. I am hoping to attend art school when I graduate and feel I could teach art and help people with their art. I would like to say thank you to my wonderful art teacher, Mr. Hoopes, and my wonderful family and friends for their support,” Whistler said. Teachers Hoopes and Antal are very proud of their students. “They are such good kids, It is a real privilege to work with them everyday,” Hoopes said. The art show brought together several types of art, including wood tech, engineering graphics and family and consumer science. The Canfield High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Mike Kelly, performed during the art show.

Dan Landers will be interim president of Mooney On July 15, Rev. Gerald DeLucia, president, Cardinal Mooney High School will return to pastoral work after four years guiding the Catholic preparatory school. “The entire Cardinal Mooney family – students, parents, alumni, faculty, administrator, employees and the Board - owes Father DeLucia a great debt,” Board Chairman Dan Landers said. “During these last four years, Father worked with the City of Youngstown to secure adjoining properties in Mooney’s neighborhood and plans for the expansion of the campus have begun. We secured the largest single donation in the school’s history. Denise DeBartolo York and family and Edward DeBartolo, Jr. and family are funding a multimillion dollar renovation of the entire school building, as well as enlarging the school’s endowment for student scholarships. A new state-of-the-art computer lab has become a reality and Chrome Books have been provided to all of the faculty members.” “I have decided to return full

time to parish ministry,” DeLucia said. “I am deeply grateful for the support of the administration and faculty over these years and I am especially grateful for having had the opportunity to become a member of the Mooney Family with its strong traditions and bonds of love. I have considered it a great honor to hold this position and to be a part of the Catholic Education of so many young people.” In addition to his duties as Mooney president, DeLucia also serves as associate pastor of St. Charles Parish and provides sacramental coverage for St. Luke Parish due to the illness of its pastor. “It is time for me to return my full efforts to parish work.” DeLucia said. Landers will serve as interim president of Cardinal Mooney during a nationwide search for DeLucia’s replacement. Landers, who is a 1975 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, has been chairman of the Mooney board since 2014. He is president of Landers-Lewis Insurance Agency & Consulting Services, LLC.
