LEAH

Melody was found on the street in Youngstown. Melody does not like other cats or dogs, but she does, however, love children. She is a sweet girl who enjoys cuddling. She is a beautiful Calico and is approximately 2 1/2 years-old. She was born on Jan. 1, 2014. Stop by the shelter to visit Melody. It is imperative that your household be cat and dog free for this adoption to work.

Leah is getting worried that she may never get out of the shelter. She is sweet and lovable, and she is said to be good with cats. She seems to do well with other dogs and loves people. She would love to have a nice yard to run and play in. If you have a resident dog, please bring them to the shelter or make arrangements for a home visit. Leah is patiently waiting for her chance at a better life. Message Pawz 2 Adopt on Facebook if you can give that to her.

Newcomer Club learns the value of police dogs

Canfield Police Department Officer Chad Debarr recently attended a Newcomer Club of the Mahoning Valley luncheon meeting with Tron, one of the department’s K9 Officers. With the help of Officer Debarr, Tron demonstrated some of his duties to the club. Police dogs are trained specifically to assist police and other law-enforcement personnel in their work. K9 dogs are expected to perform well in various situations, such as finding a suspect through smell, protecting its handler, finding hidden objects, knowing how to respond when under fire and detecting explosives and narcotics. Officer Debarr stated that Tron will retire in March 2017 after serving for seven years. The Canfield Police Canine Fund has been set up to help defray the cost of acquiring and training a new police dog. The Newcomers Club made a donation toward the fund. Dan Landers will be interim president of Mooney On July 15, Rev. Gerald DeLucia, president, Cardinal Mooney High School will return to pastoral work after four years guiding the Catholic preparatory school. “The entire Cardinal Mooney family – students, parents, alumni, faculty, administrator, employees and the Board - owes Father DeLucia a great debt,” Board Chairman Dan Landers said. “During these last four years, Father worked with the City of Youngstown to secure adjoining properties in Mooney’s neighborhood and plans for the expansion of the campus have begun. We secured the largest single donation in the school’s history. Denise DeBartolo York and family and Edward DeBartolo, Jr. and family are funding a

multi-million dollar renovation of the entire school building, as well as enlarging the school’s endowment for student scholarships. A new state-of-the-art computer lab has become a reality and Chrome Books have been provided to all of the faculty members.” “I have decided to return full time to parish ministry,” DeLucia said. “I am deeply grateful for the support of the administration and faculty over these years and I am especially grateful for having had the opportunity to become a member of the Mooney Family with its strong traditions and bonds of love. I have considered it a great honor to hold this position and to be a part of the Catholic Education of

so many young people.” In addition to his duties as Mooney president, DeLucia also serves as associate pastor of St. Charles Parish and provides sacramental coverage for St. Luke Parish due to the illness of its pastor. “It is time for me to return my full efforts to parish work.” DeLucia said. Landers will serve as interim president of Cardinal Mooney during a nationwide search for DeLucia’s replacement. Landers, who is a 1975 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, has been chairman of the Mooney board since 2014. He is president of Landers-Lewis Insurance Agency & Consulting Services, LLC.

First Night Youngstown announces annual button design competition Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci

Children who attended the Listen and Lego event at the Poland library on June 9 played with Legos after a story was read to them.

Learning and Legos at the library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Poland library hosted a Lego story time event on June 9 for children to attend. Amanda Koller, a Poland librarian, read the book “Pete the Cat, I Love my White Shoes,” to the children who came to story time. Koller chose the book because it was one of her favorites and because the Poland library is going to have a Pete the Cat

event on July 23. Pete the Cat will be making an appearance to the event. W hen Koller finished the book, the children got up and went to the tables covered with Legos. The children used the Legos to create whatever they wanted. There were Lego people, animals and original Lego blocks to choose from. Some children built different Lego creations on their own, while others worked together to make

a big Lego object. Now that school is out for many of the children, the Listen and Lego program provides a good opportunity for children to get some reading in and also have a fun activity to participate in. The Poland librar y hosts two different Lego events per month. One is a story time Lego event with books and Legos and the other is a time for children to come and play with the Legos.

sion button. The winning artist will be promoted at all press events. The artist will also be a celebrity guest in the Downtown Christmas holiday parade and tree-lighting event. The button series is traditionally intended to celebrate downtown Youngstown’s unique historic buildings and architecture. Buttons may be designed using any medium and then digitally saved as a .jpeg. Artists should depict Youngstown in a manner that highlights New Year’s Eve, no champagne glasses or images of drinking alcohol; First Night events are family-friendly. The design must include the phrase “First Night Youngstown 2017.” Interested artists should call 330-744-9966 or email firstnightyoungstown@gamil.com. Submission deadline is Aug. 31. Each year, admission buttons provide entry to all First Night events on New Year’s Eve in downtown Youngstown, sold at $5 and $10 each. Proceeds from the sale help compensate performers.
