Meet Sherman! He turned 5 on Jan. 1 and is a handsome black and white cat. He was dumped in the shelter in a suitcase. Sherman was adopted out in 2015, but after some time went by he was returned in 2016 because he didn’t get along with the owner’s cat. Sherman must be the only cat in your home. He doesn’t like dogs either. West Side Cats thinks that Sherman would do best with an older couple who have a fairly quiet life. Could Sherman have a future with you?

Faith is a beautiful girl with gorgeous green eyes. She is so sweet she will melt your heart. She gets along with all of the dogs at the shelter and loves to play with her best friend, Emily. She is also good with cats. She keeps her crate clean but Pawz 2 Adopt is not positive she is completely housebroken yet. If you have a place in your heart and your home for Faith, send a personal message to the shelter’s Facebook page and help put a smile on her face!

C.H. Campbell Elementary School third-grade students had the opportunity to learn about local Canfield history during their day-long Canfield History Walking Tour on June 7. At the other historical stops, the third-grade teachers relayed the histor y of the locations to the students, highlighting the Ohio Historical Markers at the sites. “It was very nice of the volu nteers at t he bu i ld i ng to help our students learn about Canfield’s histor y. The kids learned a lot,” said CHC third-

grade teacher Kara Mikolich. Each class was assigned a color of T-shirt to wear, so teachers and accompanying parent volunteers could keep track of each class while taking the tour. To end their walking tour, the students enjoyed a brown bag lunch at the new Canfield library. This year marked the sixth year of the tour, which was or ig i na l ly created by C.H. Campbell third-grade teachers Marian Bailey and Heidi Snyder and Hilltop Elementary School third-grade teacher Jenny Beil. The teachers researched the historical stops to correlate with third-grade content standards, which includes learning about your community.

The Canfield High School Choral Department hosted its annual spring concert on May 26. Under the direction of Choir Director Kelly Scurich, the concert choir, One Octave High Choir and Canfield Chamber Ensemble performed several songs for family and friends. Clare Neff, Canfield Choral Boosters president, welcomed the audience to the concert. “Good evening and welcome to our Spring Concert. This is a very special night for our seniors. It is their last time on our stage. I also want to mention that our music program has been named one of the best in the area, state and nationally. This, in part, is due to the hard work and dedication of Mrs. Scurich, our students and our booster organization, which takes care of everything in the background. We are glad you joined us this evening and thank you very much for coming,” Neff said. The evening started with the recognition of the senior members of the choirs with a senior processional, during which students were escorted to the stage by parents and family members, while Scurich announced them and said a few words about each student. On stage, a current photo and childhood photo was displayed of each student. The concert began with the concert choir singing “Edelweiss,” from “The Sound of Music,” arranged by Linda Spevacek. The choir then performed “Ride On, King Jesus,” arranged by L.L. Fleming, featuring a solo by Lillijana Tomko. The choir closed its portion of the concert under the direction of Rebecca Enlow, student teacher from the Youngstown State University Dana School of Music. Enlow directed the students singing “You’ve Got a Friend,” arranged by Mac Huff and featuring solos by Abby Emerick and Anthony Mariani. The students also incorporated sign language into their performance. “These students have been delightful to work with,” Scurich said, as they took their bow.

The Canfield High School Concert Choir, under the direction of Kelly Scurich, performed at the school’s annual spring concert on May 26.

Senior soloist Annie Vallas performed “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel. Next to perform was the One Octave Higher Choir, and in introducing them, Scurich told the audience they had received a superior rating at the state competition. The choir started with their state performance song, “Go, Lassie, Go,” arranged by Christi Miller. Next, the choir sang “Cups,” arranged by Deke Sharon and then closed their performance with a fun rendition of “Ma, He’s Making Eyes At Me” by Con Conrad. Senior soloist David Labra performed “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Paul Simon. The Canfield Chamber Ensemble then took the stage. “The Canfield Chamber Choir received an excellent rating at state with our first song. Such artistic detail is needed to sing this song, this spiritual,” Scurich said in introducing the choir. The choir started with their state performance song “SoonAh Will Be Done” by William Dawson. They followed that song with “If I Can’t Love Her,” from “Beauty and the Beast,” arranged by Alan Menkin, featuring a duet by Camille Bagnola and Alex Kluchar. The final senior solo was performed by Rosie Bresson, singing “A New Life,” from “Jeklye and Hyde” by Frank Wildhorn. Before the final performance

of the evening, an awards presentation took place, with several students being recognized and honored, including Annie Vallas, the winner of the Steven Snodgrass Scholarship. “I would like to say thank you to the parents, and especially the retiring officers. It has been a pleasure working with these ladies. I can’t thank them enough for their contributions,” Scurich said. To end the concert, all choirs come together, and in keeping with tradition, alumni who had studied under Scurich who were in attendance were invited to join the choirs on stage to perform “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” arranged by Peter Wilhousky. The performance featured Ben Brucoli, Chase Chizmar, Kiel Fizet, Abhijitt Khatiwada, Austin Kupec, David Labra, Andrew Letscher, Anthony Mariani and Sabato Sorice. The choreographer for the concert was Scurich, with Kay Williams and Thomas Scurich serving as paraprofessionals. Sign language was taught by Rebecca Enlow. Accompanists were Ronnie Sue Gregory and Courtney Larson, with Nicole Schmidt and Maddie Urig serving as student conductors. Student accompanists included Emma Kadilak, Jessica Lee, Max Lee, Jonathan Scurich and Allyson Viano, with David Labra and Alex Kluchar serving as instrumentalists.

Ladies for literacy By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Literary Society for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County hosted a fundraising event on June 9 at the Lake Club in Poland. The fundraiser was called “Ladies in Little Black Dresses for Literacy,” and was to raise money for the Literacy Society. The women who attended were asked to wear their favorite little black dress and to bring in a copy of a book by their favorite author to swap with the other women attending. Guests could also bring in new or gently used children’s books to donate for the summer reading program. “Black symbolizes the print you read in a book, that’s why it’s black dresses for literacy,” said Debbie Liptak, the development director of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. There were about 200 guests who showed up to the fundraiser.

Guests bought tickets prior to the event and the price of the tickets included heavy appetizers. Upon the guests’ arrivals, they received a complimentary class of wine, a drawstring library bag and entered in the chance to win a door prize. “This is our first time; it’s a huge success. The people love it, they’re all wearing black dresses,” said Liptak. Three boutiques set up tables for the guests to visit and shop. E.J. Hannah, Suzanne’s and Ivory and Birch offered to give 10 percent of the money they raised to the literary society. A few of the women who attended the event wore dresses from the vendors to do some “informal modeling.” Liptak thought of the idea in January and the Literary Society started planning at the end of winter. The money is used for the famous authors the libraries bring in as guests. “We’re so excited to see the support of the literacy for the library,” said Liptak.

Several PTO parent volunteers helped out with the lunch and games. The students enjoyed time playing games, such as soc-

cer, basketball, volleyball and whiffle ball, organized by Ronie Haurin, C.H. Campbell physical education teacher, and utilizing the school’s gaga pit and the playground at the park. As a special treat, the students were visited by Kona Ice, which gave each student a cup of Hawaiian shaved ice, courtesy of the PTO. After the picnic, the students returned to the school to watch their fourth-grade memor y video. They also received their yearbooks and were given time for a yearbook signing to wrap up their special day.
