Spaghetti dinner to benefit family of local hero The Commons at Greenbriar and Greenbriar Health Center will host an honorary spaghetti dinner for local hero John Fritz, a 26-year veteran of the Austintown Fire Department who passed away recently, on July 30 from 12-3 p.m. Fritz spent his life helping those in need. All proceeds from this benefit will go to his family, which includes his wife and five young children. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children under 12-years-old and free for children under 3-years-old, and can be purchased at the Austintown Fire Department, Greenbriar Healthcare Center or the Commons at Greenbriar. The Greenbriar Campus is located at 8064 South Ave. in Boardman. More information can be found by contacting Janette Neal at 330413-5440 or Jennifer Roberts at 330314-5152.
Local YMCA to feature Ervin Newman paintings The Davis Family YMCA is hosting “Hooray for HOLLYWOOD,” an art show featuring 28 paintings by the late Ervin Newman of Poland. All of the works, created in the 1940s, feature movie stars of that era. They were painted while Newman was a student at Struthers High School or
shortly thereafter. “Hooray for HOLLYWOOD” runs from July 27 through Aug. 31 at 45 McClurg Road in Boardman. The official opening is on July 27 from 3-5 p.m. in the Gallery at the Y. The reception, which is free and open to the public, will include cake and punch, plus music by local favorites, Steve Fazzini and Mike Roncone. In the spirit of the theme, red carpet and/or 1940s era attire is encouraged. Cecilia Newman, who donated the works after reading about the Y’s arts programs, will be the guest of honor. Because the paintings were created before she met her husband, Cecilia doesn’t have much information regarding their origins. Anyone who remembers Ervin is asked to contact Suzanne Gray at the Boardman YMCA 330-480-5656 or sgray@ youngstownymca.org.
Lumen Christi scholarship available Lumen Christi Catholic Schools will be accepting Ed Choice Scholarship applications through July 31. Your child is eligible for a scholarship if he or she lives in the city of Youngstown and attends a Youngstown public school. Also, children who are entering grades K-3 whose family income is below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guideline are eligible to receive a scholarship to attend Lumen Christi Catholic Schools. Application information can be found at http:// education.ohio.gov/Topics or call Lumen Christi Catholic Schools at 330-788-6106 for additional details.

Meet Millie, a 6-year-old laid back female brown tabby. She is particular on who she likes, specifically other cats. No other cats can be in the home with her. West Side Cats is not sure how she does with dogs. She absolutely loves children and people, and would make someone a wonderful addition to their family. Her birthday is coming up on Oct. 13 and she would really love a home of her own to be able to share her birthday with some special people. She is very easy and really just does her own thing. Come and visit Millie soon!
Handsome Mr. Winston is still looking for the perfect country home. He needs room to run and play. He would like a home with other dogs, where he can romp around and be a dog. City life isn’t for him. Pawz 2 Adopt is not sure how he does with little children, but an older child would be a great companion for him. The shelter doesn’t know how he does with cats, he may chase them. Contact Nancy Ferrell Logero with Pawz 2 Adopt if you are interested in giving him the loving home this guy needs.

Olympic hopeful shows off skills By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
American taekwondo athlete Natalie Hershberger visited the Austintown library on July 14 with her father and coach, Chris Hershberger, to talk about what it is like to be an Olympic hopeful. “Taekwondo is something that is very much part of our family, we are all blackbelts,” said Chris Hershberger. Natalie started taekwondo
when she was 6-years-old after watching her brother train. Training and competing in taekwondo competitions made Natalie eager for more. She told her father she wanted to earn an Olympic gold medal. After Chris and Natalie talked about Natalie’s life growing up competing in competitions all around the nation, she showed some of her skills to the audience. The guests who attended were in amazement of the different types
of moves Natalie showed them. “I like to bike ride, I bike ride a lot. I like to read, listen to music is my number one favorite thing to do. I like to eat and of course do taekwondo,” said Natalie Hershberger. The presentation ended with a question and answer session to allow the audience get to know Natalie better. She answered questions not just about her taekwondo, but about her personal life. Natalie and her father also
gave away two autographed magazines that Natalie was featured in to two people who could answer the questions they asked correctly. A lt hough Nata lie travels around for training and competitions, she still attends school and keeps her academics first priority. Natalie is currently in the process of a 10-year training plan in hopes to make it to the 2020 Olympics to win an Olympic gold.

Austintown officials work to improve Wickcliffe area By AMANDA TONOLI atonoli@vindy.com
Township Zoning Inspector Darren Crivelli put his final signatures on grant forms to accept 75 percent reimbursement from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources on a $16,000 project to preserve green space
in the Wickliffe area. A triangular-shaped 3.61-acre plot of land on the northwest corner of Oakwood Avenue and North Four Run Mile Road is now part of a national effort to preserve wildlife – animals and plants. With the help of the Clean
Ohio Grant, Austintown officials have ensured that land will remain an undeveloped, wooded area for the sake of surrounding property owners and the township. The grant will pay about $12,000 of project costs; the remaining 25 percent – $4,000 –

is being paid by the township’s general fund. Crivelli said keeping the area undeveloped is one of many efforts to better preserve and improve the Wickliffe area, one of the most densely populated and developed areas in the township. “It serves as a nice buffer for residents on Navarre Avenue and the Wickliffe area from industrial areas,” he said. “It was
a great acquisition for the township, as well.” The land is owned by township trustees and is managed and maintained by Austintown Township Park. Todd Shaffer, park supervisor, said he was pleased about the natural barrier, which will look nicer than a man-made look. “I’m all for what’s going to make the residents in that area happy and content,” he said.
A purple sky for Pappas By AMANDA TONOLI atonoli@vindy.com
A purple sky above Fitch High School was filled with messages on balloons loved ones wrote to Maddison Pappas as they celebrated her 16th birthday without her. Maddison died March 30 of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, a blood disorder causing blood clots to form in blood vessels, cutting off oxygen flow to various organs. Her unexpected death left Maddison’s family and friends leaning on their community to help them celebrate her life, rather than mourn her death. Sheila Green cried for the Pappas family, sharing a grim bond after losing her son just one week after Maddison’s death. Green’s son Christopher, 15, died of a breathing-related condition. “I know what [they’re] going through, and it’s not something you want to imagine. I know just every day as a mother – they just need this support,” Green said. Brandon Rucker, 16, and a friend of Maddison’s, said his favorite thing to do was to tell stories about her – recalling their adventures and keeping her memory alive. “The support from everyone is wonderful,” said Shannon Pappas, Maddison’s mother. “It’s the only thing saving this day for me. We were dreading her birthday so badly, but knowing how much she would have loved this gives us reason to look forward to it again.”
Taylor Gregory, Maddison’s 20-year-old aunt, said it was hard to put it into words on her balloon, but said she was most grateful for the opportunity to watch Maddison grow in her short 15 years. “Even though I’m the aunt, she was like my favorite sister, and I will never forget her,” she said. Sarah Linton, 16, another friend of Maddison’s, mirrored Gregory’s feelings and said she was happy to know such an amazing person and friend. “Today, we are celebrating the years she had here and the life she had,” she said. “We will make sure no one forgets her.” Maddison’s memory is also living on through charity – something she was passionate about during her life. She “just had the biggest heart,” Shannon Pappas said. “She would rather go without than see someone without.” Those joining the vigil were asked for a small donation to help furry friends Maddison cared about most at Falcon Animal Rescue, 6520 Mahoning Ave. Erik Pappas, Maddison’s father, said she would have loved the ceremony. Ava Pappas, Maddison’s 8-year-old sister, agreed, remembering releasing lanterns into the sky this past Fourth of July, which aligned into the shape of an M – something Ava saw as a sign from her sister. Erik Pappas also suffers from life-threating glioblastomas, tumors that cut off blood supply in his brain.

Family garden provides family fun By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Garden hosted a flower-themed Family Fun Friday on June 17. Every Friday during the summer, families are welcomed to Fellows Riverside Gardens to participate in various drop-in activities in the Family Garden. The afternoon is free and includes activities like yoga, face painting, storytelling and much more. Special guests attended the Family Fun Friday to paint faces and to teach yoga. Several yoga mats were set out in an open space in the garden for guests to use during the lesson. There is a different theme each Friday for the families to learn about. Those who attended the event on June 17 learned all about different flowers in the garden. Employees of Mill Creek MetroParks were available for families to ask questions and to lead the different drop-in activities.
