Local YMCA to feature Ervin Newman paintings The Davis Family YMCA is hosting “Hooray for HOLLYWOOD,” an art show featuring 28 paintings by the late Ervin Newman of Poland. All of the works, created in the 1940s, feature movie stars of that era. They were painted while Newman was a student at Struthers High School or shortly thereafter. “Hooray for HOL-
LYWOOD” runs from July 27 through Aug. 31 at 45 McClurg Road in Boardman. The official opening is on July 27 from 3-5 p.m. in the Gallery at the Y. The reception, which is free and open to the public, will include cake and punch, plus music by local favorites, Steve Fazzini and Mike Roncone. In the spirit of the theme, red carpet and/or 1940s era attire is encouraged. Cecilia Newman, who donated the works after reading about the Y’s arts programs, will be the guest of honor. Because the paintings were created before she met her husband, Cecilia doesn’t have much information regarding their origins. Anyone who remembers Ervin is asked to contact Suzanne Gray at the Boardman YMCA 330-480-5656 or sgray@ youngstownymca.org.

Meet Millie, a 6-year-old laid back female brown tabby. She is particular on who she likes, specifically other cats. No other cats can be in the home with her. West Side Cats is not sure how she does with dogs. She absolutely loves children and people, and would make someone a wonderful addition to their family. Her birthday is coming up on Oct. 13 and she would really love a home of her own to be able to share her birthday with some special people. She is very easy and really just does her own thing. Come and visit Millie soon!
Handsome Mr. Winston is still looking for the perfect country home. He needs room to run and play. He would like a home with other dogs, where he can romp around and be a dog. City life isn’t for him. Pawz 2 Adopt is not sure how he does with little children, but an older child would be a great companion for him. The shelter doesn’t know how he does with cats, he may chase them. Contact Nancy Ferrell Logero with Pawz 2 Adopt if you are interested in giving him the loving home this guy needs.

Hilltop third-graders honor famous Americans By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Hilltop Elementary School third-grade students honored famous Americans, past and present, during the school’s 30th annual Famous Americans program on June 2. “Welcome to our third-grade Famous Americans Program. Our third-graders have put a lot of work into this program. They put the most work in of all our shows, I think, with their research and learning about their Famous American. I‘d like to thank the third-grade teachers, Mr. Scurich and Courtney Larson for all the time they put into the program, too. Thank you for coming and enjoy the show,” said Joe Maroni, Hilltop Elementary School principal. Each third-grade student was dressed in a costume to portray a famous American figure of his or her choice. The students researched their choice, wrote a speech about him or her and cre-
ated a costume to wear during the program. The students chose a range of famous Americans, from entertainers to presidents, from singers to athletes, from stage and screen legends to inventors, from artists to authors and from military heroes to astronauts. Some of the famous Americans chosen by the students included John F. Kennedy, Sacagawea, Babe Ruth, Chris Kyle, Judy Garland, Betsy Ross, Jackie Robinson, Oliver Hazard Perry, Elizabeth Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, Andrew Carnegie and Wyatt Earp. To start the show, the Parade of Flags was presented. As a carrier and a guard escorted the flag down the aisle, a narrator gave the history of each flag. Flags presented included Continental, Gadsden, Grand Union, Betsy Ross, St. George’s Cross, King’s Colors, British Red Ensign, Bennington, Star Spangled Banner, Perry’s Flag, Alamo 1824, Bun-
ker Hill, Rhode Island Regiment, Fort Moultrie, Stars and Bars, Confederate Battle, “48 Star” and Old Glory. A student welcomed the audience to the show and led them in the Pledge of Allegiance. By class, each student took his or her turn at the microphone to give their memorized speech, which included facts which identified his or her famous American, as if the famous American were speaking. After each class had finished their speeches, the students joined together to sing, led by music teacher Tom Scurich and accompanied by Courtney Larson. Songs included “The StarSpangled Banner,” “Sing a Song of Peace,” “Fifty, Nifty United States,” “Armed Forces Salute” and “God Bless America.” During “Armed Forces Salute,” Scurich asked members and veterans of the armed forces to stand when their branch of military anthem was sung.
“Parents, grandparents and friends, welcome to our thirdgrade Famous Americans program. Our next selection is a tribute to the armed forces. I would like to invite our honored veterans, or family members of veterans, in the audience to stand when the anthem which represents your branch of the armed services in which you served is sung,” Scurich said. Before the “Armed Forces Salute” commenced, Scurich asked for a moment of silence as the POW/MIA flag was presented. As each anthem was performed during the salute, students presented the Army flag, Coast Guard flag, Marine flag, Air Force flag and Navy flag. As a grand finale to the show, the students unfolded and held up red, white and blue strips to form a giant paper American flag, much to the delight of audience members, triggering a standing ovation for the students.

Mill Creek MetroPark hosted a Life In and Around the Pond event on June 10 at the Birch Hill Cabin. Hillary Lenton and Julie Bartolone, naturalists at Mill Creek MetroParks, gave a lesson to 2and 3-year-old children who attended the event. The children learned about creatures that are found in and around a pond. “We try to stick to what’s going on that month and who we might see outside,” said Lenton in regards to how they pick the topics of the programs. The event started out with a coloring sheet until all of the children arrived. When the children finished coloring, Lenton read a book about different creatures they might find in a pond. Lenton used hand puppets along with the story to show the children what the creatures look like. After Lenton finished the story, the children pretended to be tadpoles and jumped up and down while Bartolone laid out lily pads for the next activity. The lily pads got laid on the ground and the children took turns being frogs and jumping from one lily pad to another. The next activity was craft time and the children made frogs out of paper plates, construction paper, googly eyes and glue.

Children who attended the Life In and Around the Pond on June 10 at the Birch Hill Cabin pretended they were frogs and jumped on the lily pads.
The children could color the plate however they wanted, then glue on the frog parts made of paper. The final step was to add eyes and the frog would be complete. The last part of the event was when the children walked around the Lily Bond outside of Birch Hill Cabin. Lenton and Bartolone led the children in hopes of searching for some of the creatures they learned about. The children saw different kinds of frogs, turtles, fish and many
others. There were also turtle nests with a few of the egg shells the children could see up close. Lenton brought out a machine that made frog noises to try and attract some frogs for the children to see. One of the frogs the children saw was a green frog and Lenton demonstrated the sound a green frog makes. The next children’s program will be on July 15 and it will be a special night time program. The children will learn about fireflies and make s’mores.

Hilltop fourth-graders leave school in style By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Hilltop Elementary School fourth-grade students celebrated the end of their time at the school with a fourth-grade picnic and day of fun on June 3. The day is meant as a festive send-off to the fourth-graders as they leave Hilltop and enter Canfield Village Middle School in the fall. To start their day, the students gathered in the gym to watch a video of themselves, set to music, which consisted of hundreds of photos of the students from their kindergarten year at Hilltop to their fourth-grade year. After the video, Hilltop physical education teacher Linda Magyar held a field day for the students, including relay races, a water balloon toss, tug-of-war and a sprint race. Lunch, which consisted of pizza, watermelon, chips and water, was provided for the stu-
dents by the PTO and parents of the fourth-grade students. A special lunch was also provided for the fourth-grade teachers. The students enjoyed a dance party with D.J. Anthony in the gym throughout the afternoon. The students danced till they dropped and enjoyed dancing with their teachers. As a treat for their special day, the Kona Ice truck arrived at the school and served Hawaiian ices to all the students. Also provided for the students as a way to remember this special day, was a photo booth where they could have their pictures taken with all their friends, props and all. At the end of the day, the students were presented with Canfield Cardinals cinch bags, courtesy of the PTO. Several PTO members helped throughout the day, with Debbie Napolitano and Catherine Ambrose serving as picnic cochairs.

Dogs and owners learn freestyle dancing at the park By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
MetroMutts of Mill Creek MetroParks hosted a Dancing with your Dog event on June 15 at the Slippery Rock Pavilion. Katie Costello, owner of The Learning Dog, taught guests and their dogs Canine freestyle. Canine freestyle dancing is a choreographed performance that is organized with music. The choreography the dogs are taught is based off
basic training the dogs have previously learned. Julie Bartolone, the MetroMutts organizer, puts together several events for dogs and their owners throughout the year. They go on hikes, dog dance, dog art and many more activities that incorporates both human and dog. This was the first time Bartolone orga n i zed a Da ncing with your Dog event. The Learning Dog works with Bartolone and MetroMutts to put on several of the activities that
are planned for the year. Dancing with your Dog was free for MetroMutts members, but non-members paid a small fee to attend. Costel lo sta r ted out t he class by teaching the dogs and their owners small parts one at a time before putting anything together. Once the dogs got the hang of the steps, the pieces were slowly combined until each separate step was turned into one dance. Costello turned on music and the dog and human pairs demon-
strated the choreography with the music. “We try to do new things, this is a new thing. After, I’ll talk to Katie and ask ‘what can we do?’ to see how we can make it better,” said Bartolone. MetroMutts is always welcoming new members to join them on their hikes and other activities. Those interested in joining the group can visit the Mill Creek MetroParks website to find more information on the different activities and how to join.

and showed the students what hard work looks like in the end. The students lined the halls of their schools, and while the graduates walked the halls, the young students bid a final farewell to the graduates with a Clap Out. “This is the first time we are doing this, and we are excited for the youngsters to see the students in caps and gowns walk the halls where it all began with Cardinal pride,” Canfield Local School Superintendent Alex Geordan said.

Giulia let the ladybugs go on the roses in the rose garden at Fellows Riverside Gardens on June 16 during the Sprout Club ladybug event.
Children spotted learning about ladybugs By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children met at Fellows Riverside Gardens for the monthly Sprout Club program on June 16 and learned all about ladybugs. Mill Creek MetroParks interns, Wendy and Paige, led Sprout Club and taught the children about ladybugs and how they help gardens and different plants. The children started off the program with a coloring sheet to color in their own ladybug. A strip of red construction paper, black dots and pipe cleaners were supplied for the children to make a ladybug headband to transform themselves into a ladybug. The black dots were placed on red paper to give it spots, and the pipe cleaners were stuck on top of the red paper for the antenna. Dressed up as ladybugs, the children each got a small container with two ladybugs inside of them. Magnifying glasses were passed around for the children to examine the ladybugs closely. After everyone had the chance to look at the ladybugs, they went outside to the rose garden and the children released their ladybugs
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

onto the roses. The children watched their ladybugs fly into the rose garden and then they got to run around f lapping their arms to pretend they were ladybugs. Toward the end of the program, the children made their way to an outside patio to participate in one last activity and enjoy a snack. The children looked for plastic bugs in a big container filled with gravel and
other small objects. The children tried to see who could find the most bugs and who could find the only ladybug hidden in the container. When all of the bugs were found, a snack of strawberries, chocolate chips, pretzels and other foods were put together to look like a ladybug for the children to enjoy. The next Sprout Club program in July will teach children about sunflowers.
