GA to meet Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

West Side Cats would like to introduce you to Oreo, a sweet, loving and friendly black female cat. She is roughly 11⁄2 years-old. She did come in with Alopecia, most likely because of over grooming herself, or possibly because of stress. Her hair is coming back in quickly. Oreo doesn’t like other cats and stays to herself. She loves children. The shelter doesn’t know how she would react to a dog. Stop by and see her. WSC is open from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Local race car driver Ryan Martino visited Jackie Glista’s C.H. Campbell Elementar y School third-grade classroom to discuss the importance of math in the career of racing and pit crew May 31. Martino was able to visit the class thanks to student Aidan Radinsky, who won the meet and greet in a Chinese Auction benefiting the Beautitude House. Martino first explained to the students how math factors into racing. “Math is essential in your day to day life. It is also very important in the world of racing. We use it in our everyday operations. We even use it when it comes to the weather in trying to calculate how the car will perform best in every type of weather. We us fractions, ratios and number spreads. We are constantly using math,” Mar-

tino said. Martino told the students his crew used math to figure out how to modify a car trailer instead of having to buy a new trailer. “My race car is 260 inches long. We already had a trailer, but it was a little too small for the car. We had to calculate how to make the new car fit. Using math, we figured out that we didn’t need to buy a new trailer, we just needed to cut a hole in the old trailer to make the car fit,” Martino said. Martino then played a multiplication board race game with the third-grade students, with two teams competing. He held a multiplication flashcard up for two students going head to head and the student who wrote the correct answer on the dry erase board first won a point for his or her team. Martino also took this opportunity to talk to the students

about sportsmanship. “Always shake the hand of your competitor, no matter what, even if you think it was an unfair win in your mind. Wish them luck down the road. For me, we are all in the same racing community and human race. We are all one together,” Martino told the students. When Martino is not racing, he serves as the bailiff for Judge Krichbaum and he called on a good friend of his to help

The staff was assisted by Canfield High School junior varsity and varsity basketball players. “We have about 20 varsity and junior varsity players helping us out with the camp this year with the 96 third-, fourth- and fifth-grade campers in the afternoon and 66 sixth-, seventhand eighth-grade campers in the morning,” said Mike Merritt, varsity assistant coach. Merritt, who also served as coordinator of the camp, varsity coach Todd Muckleroy and the players set up stations for the campers, at which they

worked on various basketball skills and drills. The primary objective of the camp was instructing the fundamentals of the game, while blending competitive events and games to exhibit growth in basketball skills. Awards and prizes, including cardinal towels, T-shirts and water bottles, were given out daily to campers who were chosen for best hustle, best defender, best rebounder, best teammate and rookie awards for third-graders and sixth-graders. The coaching staff and basketball players worked together to choose the

award winners. The winning three-on-three and five-on-five teams were also crowned champions and awarded cardinal basketball shorts. On the last day of the camp, attendees participated in the Blizzard Bowl, which is like a basketball Olympics with eight or nine competitions for the teams of campers. The prize for each member of the winning team was certificates for Dairy Queen Blizzards. All campers received a T-shirt and outdoor basketball for attending the camp.

County DD Special Olympics Committee. The warm-up event consisted of several activities to prepare the athletes for the State Summer Games in Columbus. There were a variety of running events, softball, mini javelin throwing and other games that are going to occur during the State Summer Games. This year was the 47th year of the State Summer Games and Austintown Fitch has been the location for the warm-up event for all 47 years. Volunteers from all over the valley attend the event to help out with the athletes, the concessions, the organization of different events

Many of the volunteers were from different civic groups, like the Masons and Knights of Columbus, and students from Austintown, Boardman, Poland and Canfield schools. Groups of three to four athletes would make their way to a special tent after they finished their game. Each of the athletes earned first, second, third or fourth place and received a medal for completing the games. The warm-up event provided an opportunity for the athletes to practice in different areas they may want to improve on before heading to Columbus for the State Summer Games.

Fourth-grade students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School were given the opportunity to display their talents during the school’s first Talent Show on June 8. Several students, whether by themselves or with a group of friends, wowed the audience during the show. The students took the stage as they were introduced to family, friends and fellow students by their teachers. Acts included piano solos and duets, basketball skills, several vocal soloists, hula hooping, dancers, magic tricks, a martial arts demo, poetry, a father accompanying his daughter on the guitar while she sang and a synchronized swimming performance. “It was the fourth-grade

teachers’ idea to organize this show. They wanted to showcase the talent of our fourth-graders,” said Travis Lavery, CHC principal. The Talent Show was part of the end of the school activities and a celebration of the fourthgraders’ last days at the school. As the show ended, fourthgrade teacher Dana ZarlengaBuist congratulated the students and thanked their parents for allowing the school to be a part of their talents. “Congratulations to all our talented fourth-graders. We have had some wonderful acts here today. Parents, thank you for allowing us to teach your children and be a part of their talents. Thank you to Mr. Lavery, too, for allowing us to showcase and display those talents,” ZarlengaBuist said.

Parents announce Morgan-Herman August wedding BOARDMAN

Barry and Linda Morgan of Boardman are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Allison Morgan, and Mike Herman, both of Boardman. His parents are Jak and Kelly Filisky of Hanoverton. The couple are planning a 5:30 p.m. wedding Aug. 20 and reception to follow at the Barn & Gazebo Ltd. in Salem. Invitations will be extended for both events. The bride-elect is a science teacher at Boardman Local schools. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio University and a master’s degree in library and information science from Kent State University. The future groom works as a field services manager for Northern States Metals. He received a bachelor’s degree in justice studies from KSU.

Hillary Koontz, John Libnoch plan to marry AUSTINTOWN

Jack and Sheila Koontz of Austintown are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Hillary Anne Koontz, and John Randolf Libnoch, both of Columbus. Parents of the future groom are Mike and Judy Libnoch of South Carolina. The couple are planning a 2:30 p.m. ceremony Aug. 12 at Whetstone Park of Roses in Columbus. A reception will follow at The Vault, also in Columbus. Invitations will be extended for both events. The bride-elect earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Mount Union College, a master’s degree from Waldon University and will pursue a doctorate at Ohio State University in the fall. She works as an editor for Zaner-Bloser in Columbus. The prospective groom attended the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He is employed as a leasing consultant for Cortland partners in Columbus.

Kunzer-McBride vows will be exchanged Alexis Kunzer and Kenneth McBride, both of Boardman, are engaged and planning to be married at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers. A reception will follow at the Lake Club in Poland. Her parents are Edward Kunzer and Sandra Kunzer, both of Struthers, and his parents are Kenneth (Victoria) McBride of Youngstown and Cassandra (William) Fusco of Daytona Beach, Fla. The bride-elect teaches third grade for Struthers City Schools. She graduated from Youngstown State University with a degree in early childhood education. Her fiancé earned a degree in finance from YSU, and works as chief financial officer for Comfort Keepers in Youngstown.
