City life isn’t for him. Pawz 2 Adopt is not sure how he does with little children, but an older child would be a great companion for him. The shelter doesn’t know how he does with cats, he may chase them. Contact Nancy Ferrell Logero with Pawz 2 Adopt if you are interested in giving him the loving home this guy needs.

Guests surrounded the gazebo at the Poland Village to watch the unveiling and listen to the speeches by the Poland Historical Society. Judge James Kennedy’s two greatgrandchildren, Mary Jane and Barbara, attended the unveiling to help Poland celebrate. Becki Trivison, program coordinator at Ohio History Connection, presented Poland with their seventh historical marker. “The marker honoring Poland Village and the Poland

Town Hall joins the other state markers that tell the unique story of Ohio’s history. And to be congratulated on the initiative to identify such an important historical aspect of your community,” said Trivison. The rest of the day was filled with guests stopping at all the different vendors who had a table set up. There was an arrange of products from clothing to baked goods for people to purchase. Multiple organizations had a table for guests to visit and register for those different groups. There were bounce-a-rounds for children to play on, a fire truck, police trucks and other

service vehicles to tour, a dunk tank and vendors selling carnival food all day. Guests got some entertainment from the Poland Idol competition as they cheered on their favorite contestants. Three local musicians volunteered their time to be the judges of Poland Idol and give the contestants some constructive criticism. “We are ver y blessed and lucky to have people who care about this town and research it and put these events on,” said Mayor Tim Sicafuse. The night ended with fireworks and a performance by musician Cody Gibson.

The children rode their bikes after they decorated them at the bike decorating event at the Poland library on June 24.

Children bling bikes for parade By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Poland library hosted a bike decorating event on June 24 for children to decorate their bikes for the Celebrate Poland parade. Children brought their bikes to the Poland library to decorate them with red, white and blue decorations. Ribbons,

stars, bows and other items were on hand for the children to choose from. Poland librarians Annette Ahrens and Jen Kuczek helped the children decorate their bikes. The Celebrate Poland parade, which took place on June 24, gave the children an opportunity to ride and show off their newly decorated bikes. “It’s a way to get prepared for

the parade,” said Kuczek. The supplies were provided by the Poland library and the children could spend the morning outside getting ready for the Celebrate Poland activities happening later that day. The children covered their bikes, from the handle bars to the wheels, in red, white and blue decorations. As they rode their bikes, the ribbon would blow in the wind.

Local resident working towards dreams of Broadway By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Julia Cooper is a 17-year-old Poland resident who is attending Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School to pursue a career in musical theater. Cooper has been singing since she was 5-years-old and has been performing at local community theaters in places like New Castle and Salem. One of Cooper’s friends from the theater told her about Lincoln Park and piqued her interest. Cooper had to audition to be accepted into Lincoln Park. She is now approaching her senior year at the school and is preparing to audition for colleges to pursue a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in musical theater. College auditions begin in January and Cooper has been spending her summer making sure she is prepared. Cooper has been selected as a national finalist to participate in the Great American Songbook Academy in Indiana. Cooper is also attending a twoweek ArtsBridge summer intensive program for the second year in a row at DePaul University. “If I get into a show, I’m at school from 8 in the morning to 9:30 at night. It does get tiring after awhile, but it’s so worth it.

Julia Cooper, a resident of Poland, was one of 40 national students chosen to participate in the National Songbook Academy summer intensive program.

Especially when the end product is this big show you get to show everyone,” said Cooper. Cooper participates in at least 10 shows a year at Lincoln Park. She explained that getting into a show is hard as a freshman, but as the students get more experience and involvement, it’s easier to become part of the show. “After college I plan to move to New York City. The goal is to be on Broadway, that’s my main

Cooper put together a show of her singing and a piano with interludes of concert in between. Cooper uses the show as a fundraiser to help her pay for the summer intensives.

Local YMCA to feature Ervin Newman paintings The Davis Family YMCA is hosting “Hooray for HOLLYWOOD,” an art show featuring 28 paintings by the late Ervin Newman of Poland. All of the works, created in the 1940s, feature movie stars of that era. They were painted while Newman was a student at Struthers High School or shortly thereafter. “Hooray for HOLLYWOOD” runs from July 27 through Aug. 31 at 45 McClurg Road in

Boardman. The official opening is on July 27 from 3-5 p.m. in the Gallery at the Y. The reception, which is free and open to the public, will include cake and punch, plus music by local favorites, Steve Fazzini and Mike Roncone. In the spirit of the theme, red carpet and/or 1940s era attire is encouraged. Cecilia Newman, who donated the works after reading about the Y’s arts programs, will be the guest of honor. Because the paintings were created before she met her husband, Cecilia doesn’t have much information regarding their origins. Anyone who remembers Ervin is asked to contact Suzanne Gray at the Boardman YMCA 330-480-5656 or sgray@ youngstownymca.org.

Lumen Christi scholarship available Lumen Christi Catholic Schools will be accepting Ed Choice Scholarship applications through July 31. Your child is eligible for a scholarship if he or she lives in the city of Youngstown and attends a Youngstown public school. Also, children who are entering grades K-3 whose family income is below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guideline are eligible to receive a scholarship to attend Lumen Christi Catholic Schools. Austintown Fitch football players cheered on the athletes as they completed their race during the State Summer Games warm-up event on June 18 at Austintown Fitch High School.

Athletes prepare for summer games By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Au st i ntow n Fitch H ig h School hosted a warm-up event on June 18 for those who are participating in the Special Olympics in Columbus on June 24-26. More than 300 athletes who are participating from Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage and Stark Counties. “A lot of the athletes like to come out and showcase their talents locally before they take them to Columbus,” said David Grossman, chairman and local coordinator of the Mahoning County DD Special Olympics Committee. The warm-up event consisted of several activities to prepare the athletes for the State Summer Games in Columbus. There were a variety of running events, softball, mini javelin throwing and other games that are going to occur during the

State Summer Games. This year was the 47th year of the State Summer Games and Austintown Fitch has been the location for the warm-up event for all 47 years. Volunteers from all over the valley attend the event to help out with the athletes, the concessions, the organization of different events and whatever else needed to be done. Many of the volunteers were from different civic groups, like the Masons and Knights of Columbus, and students from Austintown, Boardman, Poland and Canfield schools. Groups of three to four athletes would make their way to a special tent after they finished their game. Each of the athletes earned first, second, third or fourth place and received a medal for completing the games. The warm-up event provided an opportunity for the athletes to practice in different areas they may want to improve on before heading to Columbus for the State Summer Games.
