Faith is a beautiful girl with gorgeous green eyes, awaiting her forever home. She is so sweet that she will melt your heart. She gets along with all of the other dogs at Pawz 2 Adopt, and loves to play with her best friend, Emily. She is even good with cats. She keeps her crate clean, but they aren’t positive she is 100 percent housebroken. If you have a place in your heart and your home for Faith, send a personal message to the Pawz 2 Adopt Facebook page and help put a smile on her face!

Handsome Mr. Winston is still looking for the perfect country home. He needs room to run and play. He would like a home with other dogs, where he can romp around and be a dog. City life isn’t for him. Pawz 2 Adopt is not sure how he does with little children, but an older child would be a great companion for him. The shelter doesn’t know how he does with cats, he may chase them. Contact Nancy Ferrell Logero with Pawz 2 Adopt if you are interested in giving him the loving home this guy needs.

Farmer’s Market creates unity in the community The Austintown Farmer’s Market occurs every Monday at Austintown Township Park from 5-8 p.m., rain or shine. Shannon Lehn, the market manager, came up with the idea to start a farmer’s market after traveling with her sister to Lake Milton’s Farmer’s Market.

Lehn taught yoga there while her sister was a vendor in the market. Trying to be closer to home, Lehn was able to teach yoga at Austintown Township Park and came up with the idea to create a farmer’s market in Austintown. There are several vendors who bring their products to the farmer’s market. The market

started three years ago with under 10 vendors, and currently there are about four times as many vendors than when the market first started. “There are no paid employees here. All of the money that comes into the market goes right back into the market,” said

beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes Swiss chicken, sand trap potatoes, kolbassi and sauerkraut, California blended vegetables, Caesar salad, tomato, pepper and onion salad, jello and dessert. The cost is $18 per person. Reservations can be made by calling Darlene Demjen at 330-755-9089 or Marilyn Abramski at 330-726-2527 by July 31. Mill Creek Chapter’s scholarship recipients will be guests at this meeting. This month’s guest speakers are twins Levi and Emily Smith, who run the Coze’ Coffee Shop at White House Fruit Farms. They are students at YSU and will speak about how they started their business and how it ties in with their education at YSU and their plans for the future. The public is welcome.

There are Facebook “like” and “share” contests, a bring your own bag contest and more to encourage people to attend. In August, if people bring in school supplies, they will be entered to win $10 in market

Food service staff sharpen culinary skills By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Food ser v ice st a f f f rom schools all over the Mahoning Valley took classes taught by a professional chef on July 19-22 and July 26-27 to sharpen their culinary skills. Boardman food service director Nata lie Win k le a nd Austintown food service director Tascin Brooks worked together with money they re-

ceived from a grant to create a program that helps schools from all around the area create better lunch options for the students. This was the first time there has been a program for the food service staff and the food service directors hope to continue to raise money to keep providing the program for years to come. More than 30 people participated in a two-day, eight-hour

class taught by Lauren McCabe, a chef from California. McCabe and Bernadette Paul, a dietitian, worked with each other to help the food service staff learn new techniques that the staff can use in their food preparation. “It shows they care about what they’re doing that they’ll give up their days to come and do it. FOOD SERVICE Continued from Page 10 It’s not something they’re being forced to do, it’s something they chose to do. They’re very open to learn,” said Winkle. The staff learns more than preparing new dishes for students. They also learn about customer service and quality food. The food they are learning how to make was taken from a contest that students participated in where they created their own dish they would

like to eat at school. “The most important thing of this training is to get all the food service professionals on the same page so that the students get consistent messages,” said Paul. Learning new and creative meals makes the students more excited to try new foods that they might not try on their own. The schools’ culinary service constantly tries to come up with innovative meals that follow the USDA guidelines while experimenting with ideas that would appeal to the students.
