Faith is a beautiful girl with gorgeous green eyes, awaiting her forever home. She is so sweet that she will melt your heart. She gets along with all of the other dogs at Pawz 2 Adopt, and loves to play with her best friend, Emily. She is even good with cats. She keeps her crate clean, but they aren’t positive she is 100 percent housebroken. Handsome Mr. Winston is still looking for the perfect country home. He needs room to run and play. He would like a home with other dogs, where he can romp around and be a dog. City life isn’t for him. Pawz 2 Adopt is not sure how he does with little children, but an older child would be a great companion for him. The shelter doesn’t know how he does with cats, he may chase them. Contact Nancy Ferrell Logero with Pawz 2 Adopt if you are interested in giving him the loving home this guy needs.

Boardman High School had a ground-breaking ceremony on June 23 for the creation of a new band shell. Bill Bonte, president of the Booster Club, started the ceremony with an introduction of those who helped the idea of creating a band shell come to life. About six years ago, the Boa rd ma n Booster executive committee started going through several phases to get to the point they are at now in the project. Phase one was the turf, phase two was the stands, scoreboard and press box and phase three consists of resurfacing the track, a naming rights Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci facade and a new walkway with Pictured, from left, are Tom Ruggieri, Dave Wolfe, John Landers, Tom Madej, Tim Saxton, superintendent Frank See BAND, Page 4

The Veris donated $150,000 to fund the construction of the band shell. Bill Veri met Tom Ruggieri, the Director of Bands, about four years ago. Children met at Fellows Riverside Gardens for the monthly Sprout Club program on June 16 and learned all about ladybugs. Mill Creek MetroParks interns, Wendy and Paige, led Sprout Club and taught the children about ladybugs and how they help gardens and different plants. The children started off the program with a coloring sheet to color in their own ladybug. A strip of red construction paper, black dots and pipe cleaners were supplied for the children to make a ladybug headband to transform themselves into a ladybug. The black dots were placed on red paper to give it spots, and the pipe cleaners were stuck on top of the red paper for the antenna. Dressed up as ladybugs, the children each got a small container with two ladybugs inside of them. Magnifying glasses were passed around for the children to examine the ladybugs closely. After everyone had the chance to look at the ladybugs, they went outside to the rose garden and the children released their ladybugs onto the roses. The children watched their ladybugs fly into the rose garden and then they got to run around flapping their arms to pretend they were ladybugs. Toward the end of the program, the children made their

No team played more games than Boardman —seven in six days— and the locals had the home team, Dover, waiting for them in the final. A protested run gave Board-

We just had one bad half-inning, then we played every day,” Boardman coach Rob Hyde said. “It tough to manage the pitching aspect of it at that age, but it was sort of a blessing in disguise. having a day off.” In the first game, Boardman took a 4-2 lead in the fourth before Dover tied the game in the top of the sixth. Boardman’s Jack Ericson doubled to open the bottom of the inning. Two batters latter, Zach Ganser doubled to center field to bring Ericson around to home plate. The throw made it to home plate, but Ericson jumped over the catcher and home plate, reaching backward to score the run. Dover protested the run arguing that the run shouldn’t count because Ericson left his feet. Officals called the Little League regional office in Indianapolis to get a ruling, which came down in Boardman’s favor. “It’s a unique heads-up play,” Hyde said. “We don’t practice that.” Gavin Hyde threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Dylan Barrett collected two RBIs and T.J. Richey added one more. Boardman never trailed in game two. Caleb Satterfield had three hits, including a two-run home run. Richey and Ganser each had two hits. Boardman’s season ends with the state title.
BCB team claims victory over Loveland LL The Boardman Community Baseball 10-year-old All Star team defeated Loveland LL with a score of 6-5 on July 29 in the 9-10 year-old State Tournament in Dover. The team is 5-1 in State Tournament play.
BCB team takes tournament title The Boardman Community Baseball 10-year-old All Star team defeated Dover LL twice on July 30 to win the Ohio 9-10 State Tournament in Dover. Boardman took the first game 5-4. Dover protested the game when Boardman’s Jack Ericson’s dove over the catcher to score the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The on-field call was upheld by the Little League Regional Office in Indianapolis, Ind., forcing a second game to determine a tournament champion. The BCB All Stars then defeated Dover LL 10-4 in a rain-delayed second game to win the State Championship.

Local YMCA to feature Ervin Newman paintings The Davis Family YMCA is hosting “Hooray for HOLLYWOOD,” an art show featuring 28 paintings by the late Ervin Newman of Poland. All of the works, created in the 1940s, feature movie stars of that era. They were painted while Newman was a student at Struthers High School or shortly thereafter. “Hooray for HOLLYWOOD” runs from July 27 through Aug. 31 at 45 McClurg Road in Boardman. The official opening is on July 27 from 3-5 p.m. in the Gallery at the Y. The reception, which is free and open to the public, will include cake and punch, plus music by local favorites, Steve Fazzini and Mike Roncone. In the spirit of the theme, red carpet and/ or 1940s era attire is encouraged. Cecilia Newman, who donated the works after reading about the Y’s arts programs, will be the guest of honor. Because the paintings were created before she met her husband, Cecilia doesn’t have much information regarding their origins. Anyone who remembers Ervin is asked to contact Suzanne Gray at the Boardman YMCA 330-480-5656 or sgray@ youngstownymca.org.

Austintown Fitch High School hosted a warm-up event on June 18 for those who are participating in the Special Olympics in Columbus on June 24-26. More than 300 athletes who are participating from Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage and Stark Counties. “A lot of the athletes like to come out and showcase their
talents locally before they take them to Columbus,” said David Grossman, chairman and local coordinator of the Mahoning County DD Special Olympics Committee. The warm-up event consisted of several activities to prepare the athletes for the State Summer Games in Columbus. There were a variety of running events, softball, mini javelin throwing and other games that are going to occur during the State Summer Games. This year
was the 47th year of the State Summer Games and Austintown Fitch has been the location for the warm-up event for all 47 years. Volunteers from all over the valley attend the event to help out with the athletes, the concessions, the organization of different events and whatever else needed to be done. Many of the volunteers were from different civic groups, like the Masons and Knights of Columbus, and students from Austintown,
Boardman, Poland and Canfield schools. Groups of three to four athletes would make their way to a special tent after they finished their game. Each of the athletes earned first, second, third or fourth place and received a medal for completing the games. The warm-up event provided an opportunity for the athletes to practice in different areas they may want to improve on before heading to Columbus for the State Summer Games.

Children attended the Stevens Puppets performance on June 23 at the Boardman library to watch a performance of “The Wizard of Oz.”
Puppets bring stories to life By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Boardman library hosted a puppet show presentation on June 24 as part of the summer reading program. Gnoli Raynor, a puppeteer from Stevens Puppets, performed “The Wizard of Oz” for families to watch using only 10 hand-carved, wooden marionettes. The show consisted of music and prerecorded voiceovers for the puppets to act along to. Raynor’s parents, Dan and Zan, are the current owners of Stevens Puppets. She has been touring her entire life watch-
ing and taking part in the performances her parents put on for others. Stevens Puppets consists of 157 total puppets and performs nine shows. The puppeteers at Stevens Puppets travel all over the world putting on performances for families. Raynor has been touring on her own for four years and says her favorite part is the children and watching them react to puppetry. “There’s a lot of kids who won’t sit and watch a 45-minute mov ie or T V show, but they’ll sit and watch my show because they are so entranced by the puppets. I just enjoy bringing it back to the kids,”
said Raynor. Stevens Puppets specializes in classic fairy tales and literature. Martin Stevens, founder of Stevens Puppets, started the company in Middleberry, Ind. in 1933. They are the oldest and largest puppet company in North America, aside from The Muppets. “My dream is to bring it back into mainstream media. I want to bring puppets that much more into society, have them on TV, on stage, in schools,” said Raynor. Raynor is majoring in theater and studio art and hopes to use her studies to keep performing with Stevens Puppets.

POLICE REPORTS July 21 Arrest: Authorities near York and California avenues took into custody 69-yearold John F. Steele of Terraview Drive, Boardman, who was wanted on two domestic-violence charges and one felony count of disrupting public services after his wife alleged an enraged Steele had thrown her to the floor during an argument, then tossed a vacuum cleaner, striking her left knee. Later, officers discovered the phone lines had been cut in the basement, according to a report. Attempted burglary: A man in the 8100 block of Tod Avenue noticed pry marks and a broken knife in a hole in a door knob, apparently after someone had tried to enter the apartment. Felonious assault: Members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested William S. Rios, 27, of Oregon Trail, Boardman, on a felonious-assault charge, and 29-yearold Donald F. Bucci II of Pine Hill Drive, Poland, on one count of simple assault related to a fight July 12 at a South Avenue restaurant. During the altercation, a man alleged Bucci had poured beer over his head and shoulders and, as he fought back, Rios struck the accuser’s head with a beer bottle, leaving a 2-inch gash. Arrest: Officers picked up Jeremy Daviduk, 31, as he walked in the 7400 block of Market Street. Daviduk, of Moherman Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on a Youngstown Municipal Court bench warrant accusing him of failing to appear in court on a criminal-trespassing charge. Breaking and entering: Acting on a search warrant, police took into custody two Boardman boys, 16 and 17, on charges of theft and breaking and entering. Earlier this month, someone had entered a home in the 4200 block of Chester Drive before stealing $80 and three packs of cigarettes. Criminal damaging: A vehicle in the 5000 block of Aravesta Avenue was found with several dents and scratches, resulting in $2,000 worth of damage. Employee theft: Yolanda M. ward as she took his cellphone in an effort to discipline him. Theft: Police charged 22-year-old Timothy D. Arrest: Authorities assisted members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in arresting 62-year-old Norman J. Hageman Jr. at his Meadowbrook Avenue residence on one count each of felonious assault and domestic violence. An elderly family member alleged the Boardman man had pushed her down; X-rays taken at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital revealed the victim had suffered a broken right hip, a report showed. Theft: A man noticed his cellphone missing while at a business in the 4900 block of Market Street. July 24 Arrest: A traffic stop near Indianola Road led to 20-year-old Nicholas A. Pollifrone’s arrest on a charge of operating a vehicle impaired. Pollifrone, of Devonshire Drive, Boardman, had a 0.124 blood-alcohol content, which exceeds Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit, a report stated. Drugs: Authorities on Market Street pulled over and charged 22-year-old Darren L. Boatwright Jr. of Parkcliffe Avenue, Youngstown, with two felony counts of trafficking in drugs, and 23-year-old Anthony D. Goddard of Lakewood, Ohio, with obstructing official business. Boatwright admitted having a bag of suspected marijuana; in addition, found were two bags of pills determined to be Oxycodone, a narcotic often used to treat moderate to severe pain, police alleged. Criminal damaging: A woman noticed her car’s driver’s-side window had been broken while she was at her boyfriend’s Meadowood Circle residence.
