Cars and Coffee Car Show takes place at Canfield library By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

High Octane Coffee Company and the Friends of Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County partnered to present a Cars and Coffee Car Show in the parking lot of the Canfield library on July 10. The event was open to cars, trucks and motorcycles, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. “The money raised here today will go to support children’s library programs, which is so important. We are excited to have great children’s programs in our libraries,” said Deborah Liptak, Development Director of the Mahoning County Library System. With approximately 25 participants, awards, such as High Octane T-shirts and gift certificates, were given out by anonymous judges. Liptak said the library hopes to build on the car show’s success. “This is the first time we have done this and we hope to do more, especially with High Octane Coffee Company. We hope to build on today’s success for future events. This is something new, a car show on a Sunday morning. It‘s a positive thing and a great place to hang out,” Liptak said. The High Octane Coffee Company, with a branch inside the Canfield library, offered their fresh by the cup coffees at the event. High Octane Coffee Company, owned by Joe Sylvester and Jen Rodway, uses a motor sports theme to name their coffee drinks, such as the Super Charger and the Flat Tire. They also offer teas and hot chocolate.

Operation Blessing receives huge donation By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

What started as a contest between local Dollar General stores quickly became an inspiration to contribute to a good cause for the employees of the Canfield Dollar General. The employees took it upon themselves to coordinate donations to Canfield Operation Blessing. The employees encouraged customers to buy a Dollar General item or two to be donated to Canfield Operation Blessing. Items which were promoted were toiletries and other items which Operation Blessing clients cannot purchase with their food cards. The store collected 28 large boxes of items, including toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, toothpaste, tissues, napkins, hand soap, body wash, trash bags and aspirin, which Canfield Operation Blessing will distribute to their clients in July and August. “We would like to thank the employees of Canfield Dollar General and especially Manager Sherri Lupole. We would also like to thank the customers of Dollar General. They are so good to us. The Dollar General employees, customers and people of Canfield are wonderful,” said Julie Kercher, Director of Canfield Operation Blessing.

Director of Canfield Operation Blessing Julie Kercher (left) and Assistant Director and Treasurer of Canfield Operation Blessing Sandy Daniels (right) prepared to pack up the hundreds of items donated to their organization from the Canfield Dollar General, which they will distribute to their clients during the months of July and August.

The Canfield Dollar General also collects donations of toys at Christmas for Operation Blessing and is considering the possibility of collecting school supplies for the organization to distribute to their clients. Lupole said if her store wins the contest between the Dollar General stores, they have an idea of what to do with the prize. “Whichever store wins the

contest will receive a $50 pizza party. I talked to my employees and they all decided that if we win the contest, we will donate the $50 to Operation Blessing. The employees here are amazing and they really care about the Canfield community. I would also like to thank the people of Canfield for buying and donating items for Operation Blessing. We really appreciate their support,” Lupole said.

Boardman Park welcomed families to its Family Night in the Park with a variety of activities, providing something for everyone, on July 16. The evening bega n w it h bounce-arounds for children, wagon rides, Jocko the Balloon Man, the music of Backbeat, Porgie the Clown’s magic show and, to close out the evening, a showing of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Boardman Park Recreation Director Karen McCallum said the focus of the evening is to offer families a little to no cost evening out.

“We want to offer families an opportunity to enjoy an evening out with little to no cost. All activities here tonight are free. We have activities for the children, a great band, a great magic show and then the movie. It’s a funfilled night,” McCallum said. McCallum also stressed the family nights are for all communities to enjoy, not just Boardman. “Our family nights are for all communities and everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy a free family night out. Some people bring dinner and enjoy listening to the music of the band. We have waves of people who come for the certain activi-

ties and we have people who come for the entire night,” McCallum said. The park hosts family nights four times per summer, with the last one being a family camp out. “Our last Family Night this summer is a camp out. Families can camp out in the park and have a great time. This year, the Boy Scouts are going to be here to hold a memorial flag burning ceremony, which will be a neat experience,” McCallum said. McCallum said the park offers a whole host of events. “People can check out website at boardmanpark.com for a list of all our activities. We have

events for everyone and offer diversity in our programming. Boardman Park is an oasis in the heart of Boardman and we invite everyone to check us out,” McCallum said. Family Night in the Park sponsors include Cortland Banks, Armstrong, Boardman Bounce and iHeart Radio.

Local YMCA to feature Ervin Newman paintings The Davis Family YMCA is hosting “Hooray for HOLLYWOOD,” an art show featuring 28 paintings by the late Ervin Newman of Poland. All of the works, created in the 1940s, feature movie stars of that era. They were painted while Newman was a student at Struthers High School or shortly thereafter. “Hooray for HOLLYWOOD” runs from July 27 through Aug. 31 at 45 McClurg Road in Boardman. The official opening is on July 27 from 3-5 p.m. in the Gallery at the Y. The reception, which is free and open to the public, will include cake and punch, plus music by local favorites, Steve Fazzini and Mike Roncone. In the spirit of the theme, red carpet and/or 1940s era attire is encouraged. Cecilia Newman, who donated the works after reading about the Y’s arts programs, will be the guest of honor. Because the paintings were created before she met her husband, Cecilia doesn’t have much information regarding their origins. Anyone who remembers Ervin is asked to contact Suzanne Gray at the Boardman YMCA 330-480-5656 or sgray@youngstownymca.org.

The Canfield Cardinals 10-11 District 2 Baseball Team was crowned State Champions of the 2016 Little League Baseball 10-11 Ohio State Tournament on July 31. The tournament, played at the Fields of Dreams in Boardman, ran from July 23-July 31. The Cardinals started their road to the State Championship by beating Hamilton West Side Little League 16-10 on July 23. The Cardinals then moved on in the winners’ bracket to beat Washington Court House Little League 13-1 on July 25. Continuing in the winners’ bracket, the Cardinals suffered a loss to Maumee Little League with a score of 12-10 on July 26. With the team taking to the losers’ bracket, they defeated Hamilton West Side Little League with a score of 11-4 on July 28, and continued to knock off competitors with a win over Mount Vernon Little League with a score of 12-2 on July 29. Forced to face Maumee Little League again, the Cardinals dominated that game and came out on top with a score of 7-2 on July 30, earning them a trip to the Championship Game versus Dover Little League July 31. In order to win the State Championship, the Cardinals would have to beat Dover twice, due to the fact that the tournament was double elimination and Dover had not suffered a loss. With a huge home crowd behind them, the Cardinals rallied in the first game to beat Dover 7-6 in seven innings, triggering a second Championship Game. In their final match-up, the Cardinals came out firing and beat Dover 13-2 in four innings to be named the 2016 Ohio Little League State Champions. Team members included, fromt left, (front) Dom Marzano, Ethan Prout, Ty Stricko, Jack Davis, Jake Schneider; (middle) Broc Lowry, Connor Miller, Luca Ricchiuti, Ben Slanker, A.J. Havrilla, Peyton Ahlquist, Jameson Beck, Logan Cayavec, Connor Daggett; (back) coach Wes Prout, coach Rick Havrilla, team manager George Beck, coach Barry Daggett and coach Dan Stricko.
