Poland library welcomed Bob Walls from Stevens Puppets to perform “Aladdin” with his marionettes on July 26. Before the show began, Walls talked about his life and the history of Stevens Puppets and the marionettes. “This year, 2016, is our 83rd year of doing this type of puppet show at schools and libraries all across the country,” said Walls. The show used prerecorded voices that Zan and Dan Raynor, the current owners of Stevens Puppets, and their family recorded. There were some parts throughout the presenta-
tion that Wells would add in a sound effect or a few words of his own to make it funny. Wells handled all of the marionettes on his own, he didn’t have any help behind the scenes. When the show ended, Walls introduced each marionette and brought out the magician and the genie for the children to see up close. Walls explained how the marionettes were made to be controlled with just a few strings and a small, wooden structure. Walls hosted a question and answer session before the children left. There were questions Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci about the presentation, about the marionettes and several The marionettes from Bob Walls’ presentation of “Aladdin” from Stevens Puppets were on display for the children to look at after the show on July 26 at the Poland others. library.

Boardman Park Recreation Director Karen McCallum said the focus of the evening is to offer families a little to no cost evening out. “We want to offer families an opportunity to enjoy an evening out with little to no cost. All activities here tonight are free. We have activities for the children, a great band, a great magic show and then the movie. It’s a fun-filled night,” McCallum said. McCallum also stressed the family nights are for all communities to enjoy, not just Boardman. “Our family nights are for all communities and everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy a free family night out. Some people bring dinner and enjoy listening to the music of the band. We have waves of people who come for the certain ac-
tivities and we have people who come for the entire night,” McCallum said. The park hosts family nights four times per summer, with the last one being a family camp out. “Our last Family Night this summer is a camp out. Families can camp out in the park and have a great time. This year, the Boy Scouts are going to be here to hold a memorial flag burning ceremony, which will be a neat experience,” McCallum said. McCallum said the park offers a whole host of events. “People can check out website at boardmanpark.com for a list of all our activities. We have events for everyone and offer diversity in our programming. Boardman Park is an oasis in the heart of Boardman and we invite everyone to check us out,” McCallum said. Family Night in the Park sponsors include Cortland Banks, Armstrong, Boardman Bounce and iHeart Radio.

It’s not something they’re being forced to do, it’s something they chose to do. They’re very open to learn,” said Winkle. The staff learns more than preparing new dishes for students. They also learn about customer service and quality food. The food they are learning how to make was taken from a con-
test that students participated in where they created their own dish they would like to eat at school. “The most important thing of this training is to get all the food service professionals on the same page so that the students get consistent messages,” said Paul. Learning new and creative meals makes the students more excited to try new foods that they might not try on their own. The schools’ culinary service constantly tries to come up with innovative meals that follow the USDA guidelines while experimenting with ideas that would appeal to the students.
