Cafaro Family Foundation supports the local Scoutreach Program The Cafaro Family Foundation has provided a $5,000 donation to the local Boy Scouts of America’s Scoutreach program for this coming school year. This recent donation reflects the perennial support by the Cafaro Family Foundation for Scoutreach, which brings Scouting to disadvantaged youth in the Warren and Youngstown City Schools at no cost to either the schools or to youth that become Cub Scouts. This past school year, more than 1,000 boys in grades 1-5 participated in this Scouting program, which is not only well received by the children, but also by the teachers and school administrators. This Scouting program reinforces good study habits, attendance and individual recognition. The generosity of the Cafaro Family Foundation will support Scoutreach’s current initiative to expand the program to include sixth-graders, which is a request by school administrators.

Special characters made an appearance for the children to visit with. Children lined up to get pictures taken with Captain Hook, Ana and Elsa from “Frozen,” and a pair of Minions. Games like balloon darts, a bean bag toss and many more were set up in a grassy area for children to play and have a chance to win prizes. A bouncy house from Austintown

Bounce was set up for children to play in. Tables from multiple local businesses were set up around the park with different information and activities available to the guests. Home Depot in Austintown had a table where they provided the children with different woodworking crafts to make things like birdhouses. Several concession trucks were open for the guests to get a snack from when they got hungry. Law enforcement members stood next to their vehicles and were available for children to

talk to and ask them different questions about their jobs. The vehicles were opened up for children to go inside and explore what they were like. Being able to explore and talk to law enforcement allowed the children to become more comfortable around them and learn that they are their to help. “It helps let people in the community know we are watching our neighborhoods, we’re taking care of our neighborhoods. We want to make them safer and bring everyone together,” said Wilfong.

He also brings a wealth of knowledge to the program being a former baseball player for Rich Coppola and a pitcher for The University of Akron baseball team. Paris will fill the position of long time coach Wally Ford, who dedicated many years to the baseball program in addition to being a teacher at Fitch. Night Out creates better community communication

CLASSIC ROCK CONCERT SERIES 2016

The township’s fourth annual National Night Out observance Tuesday evening added a new attraction to make the community aware of an offense on the rise: distracted driving. Brent Rose of Columbiana County, an Ohio Department of Transportation transportation manager, brought a distracted-driving simulator for all to try. The simulator provided participants two options: to drive impaired or to drive distracted. “It gets kids aware of how distracted they really are, even when they don’t think they are,” he said. John Beckett of Austintown drove distracted, running over a few virtual pedestrians and missing several stop signs. “It’s good to get people to realize how dangerous it is,” he said. Another danger that Night Out brings awareness to is not having open lines of communication with emergency personnel or first responders. Todd Shaffer, Austintown Tow nship Park super v isor, said it’s important, especially recently, to encourage positive interactions with police officers and the community. “We just want to inform people that the badge is not something to fear,” he said. Ohio State Highway Patrol officer Dan Deluca agreed and said letting residents see officers as “just regular people” helps them see officers in a better light. “It’s nice to be a part of the community and not just a police officer,” he said. “We’re friendly, and we care about your families, too.” Sara Macovitz of Girard said she enjoys bringing her family to the fun free event in a safe environment with so many members of the community together. Her daughter, Gabrielle Macovitz, 12, said the event is all about spreading “knowledge about what’s going on in the community.”

The Walter Terlecky playground at Austintown Township Park has equipment for children of all ages to play on.

Austintown Township Park creates new play areas By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Austintown Township Park has recently completed some new additions to the park, including a playground and a pickleball court. The new playground, named after Walter Terlecky, opened in June and is still installing new equipment for the children.

The playground will be getting a set of monkey bars and a spiral slide. One of the favorites among the families is the adultchild swing. “Moms line up for it. We have two swings and I’ve seen the line six or seven moms deep,” said Todd Shaffer, Park Supervisor. Terleck y, who prev iously owned the Westchester build-

ing, gave it to the Austintown township on the condition that they would use the money made from the building to improve the community and benefit the youth. The old playground was 21-years-old and was starting to become unsafe for the children to play on. The playground is divided into two areas with certain equipment, one for child ages

18 months to 5-years-old and one for children 5-13 years-old. This allows the children to play with others closer to their age and have equipment that is more suited for children in that age group. The new addition of the pickleball court has been a huge hit among many of the guests at Austintown Township Park. There are people playing pick-

leball from early in the morning when the courts open to night time until the sun goes down. “This morning we had standing room only, t here were several people waiting,” said Shaffer. Shaffer and the Austintown board of trustees are continually looking for ways to improve the park and enhance the experience of the guests.

They arrived in Ohio on July 23, and will return on Aug. 19, using their entire summer break from school to live with an American family. The visitors talked on many new experiences with their host families, such as working with animals, travel to sporting events, travel to Lake Erie and the ocean, meeting entire families, working in gardens, farm life, and trying many new foods. The age range is from 10 - 15 for both visitors and their host sibling. Families are encouraged to live their “normal” lives and treat the visitor as one of the family. Pictured are: Front: Anri Nakatani and host Kaylee Burcaw from North Benton. Back from left to right: Mai Miura and host Kiah Nelson of Copley, Analyse Sutton of Farmdale, and guest Arisu Takubo, Garrett Roach of Bristolville and guest Yuto Ishii, Seth Zorica of Atwater and guest Hayato Takahashi, and Maggie Graber of Louisville and guest Erika Takata.

Corrine Sanderson, Community Organizer, partnered with the Austintown and Struthers Police Department to plan a stuffed animal and baseball card drive to help the families in the community. The community was asked to bring in new or gently used stuffed animals and baseball cards. The donated items will be given to families in the community by the police officers in their own neighborhood. Donations were accepted by the Austintown and Struthers

Police Department Aug. 1-5. The Shrine of Our Lady also accepted donations on Aug. 5. All donations were greatly appreciated by the police departments and communities. The idea of this event is to help show people how dedicated the Police Departments are to their communities. With the recent loss of lives of civilians and police officers across the country, the police departments in Mahoning County want to education the people in the community that the police have a mission to help protect and serve.
