Local children to audition to perform with Moscow Ballet The Moscow Ballet will be running a “Dance With Us” program in Youngstown for students ages 7-17. Anna Radik, soloist and a principal dancer from the Moscow Ballet, will be auditioning children from the Youngstown area on Aug. 29 at Ruth’s Dance and Fitness Co. LLC in Boardman to audition for “The Great Russian Nutcracker,” which will take place at Deyor Performing Arts Center on Nov. 26. The choreography will be taught Aug. 29 through Sept. 1, then after that Ruth from Ruth’s Dance and Fitness Co. LLC will work on the choreography with the students. All children from the Youngstown community between the ages of 7-17 are welcome to audition. If cast, the students will need to pay a $50 casting fee and must be able to attend all rehearsals between Aug. 29 and Sept. 1.
Cafaro Family Foundation supports the local Scoutreach Program The Cafaro Family Foundation has provided a $5,000 donation to the local Boy Scouts of America’s Scoutreach program for this coming
school year. This recent donation reflects the perennial support by the Cafaro Family Foundation for Scoutreach, which brings Scouting to disadvantaged youth in the Warren and Youngstown City Schools at no cost to either the schools or to youth that become Cub Scouts. This past school year, more than 1,000 boys in grades 1-5 participated in this Scouting program, which is not only well received by the children, but also by the teachers and school administrators. This Scouting program reinforces good study habits, attendance and individual recognition. The generosity of the Cafaro Family Foundation will support Scoutreach’s current initiative to expand the program to include sixthgraders, which is a request by school administrators.
Learn to square dance with Friendly Squares Learn to square dance at the weekly square dance lessons being offered beginning Sept. 13 from 7-9 p.m. at the Niles Senior SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. The lessons are being offered by the Niles Friendly Squares. All age groups are welcome. There is a nominal fee of $6 per lesson. Murder in the Library: “Pasta, Passion and Pistols” The succulent aroma of home cooked pasta is drifting from New York City’s most popular Italian eatery, La Speranza, but something else is heating up the kitchen... coldblooded murder! Restaurateur Pepi Roni has been shot in the back with his own pistol. Tonight his family and friends will gather to pay their respects to poor Pepi, but one of the guests won’t be shedding any tears. A representative from the Armstrong Air and Space Museum came to put on a presentation at the Boardman library on July 22. Families who attended the event learned about what astronaut’s lives are like when they go into space for long periods of time. Astronauts have to work out several hours a day to stay in the best physical shape they can, allowing them to make the transition from Earth to space and back to Earth as easy as possible. The children learned that there isn’t any gravity or oxygen in space so the astronauts have to wear special space suits to survive. There were question and answer sessions throughout
the presentation to help transition from one subject to the next. There were several props the children could see up close after the presentation, including a space suit, a helmet, moon shoes, a backpack and other items that astronauts use when they go into space. Three different activities were set up for the children to play before they left the program. There was a mini catapult that the children used to try and get a wad of paper in the trash can, a game where someone dropped a ruler and the other person had to try and catch it before it hit the ground and a puzzle one person put together blindfolded while listening to directions from the person they worked with. they were used for. Several questions were asked, including what Officer Mike did during his job and how long he has been working as a patrolman. Officer Mike also talked
about the two police dogs that Boardman has at the station. After the children learned about the life of a patrolman, they went outside and had the opportunity to look inside the police car. All of the children sat in the backseat to see what it was like and a few of the children were lucky enough to sit
in the driver’s seat. The children made some special gifts for Officer Mike as a ‘thank you’ for coming and talking to them. There were drawings, as well as a large poster with handprints in the shape of a heart that said “thank you for keeping us safe” on the inside.

Boardman Park welcomed families to its Family Night in the Park with a variety of activities, providing something for everyone, on July 16. The evening bega n w it h bounce-arounds for children, wagon rides, Jocko the Balloon Man, the music of Backbeat, Porgie the Clown’s magic show and, to close out the evening, a showing of “Star Wars: The
Force Awakens.” Boardman Park Recreation Director Karen McCallum said the focus of the evening is to offer families a little to no cost evening out. “We want to offer families an opportunity to enjoy an evening out with little to no cost. All activities here tonight are free. We have activities for the children, a great band, a great magic show and then the movie. It’s a fun-filled night,” McCallum said.
McCallum also stressed the family nights are for all communities to enjoy, not just Boardman. “Our family nights are for all communities and everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy a free family night out. Cardinal Mooney hosts cheerleading camp The Cardinal Mooney High School cheerleaders hosted their 16th annual cheer camp on the CMHS campus grounds on Aug. 2-4 to promote school spirit, fellowship and physical fitness for more than 100 girls between the grades of kindergarten and eighth. Under the direction of advisor, Leslie Groubert, the CMHS Cheer Squad mentored campers in various clinics on cheer style, safety and spirit motivation.
All campers received a t-shirt and participated in a cheer exhibition on Aug. 4 for parents. In addition, eighth-grade campers had the opportunity to participate in an All-Star tryout for the chance to cheer with the CMHS cheerleaders at a home football game this fall with all seventh- and eighthgrade squads invited to cheer at this year’s Mooney-Ursuline rally.

Food service staff sharpen culinary skills By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com Food service staff from schools all over the Mahoning Valley took classes taught by a professional chef on July 19-22 and July 26-27 to sharpen their culinary skills. Boardman food service director Natalie Winkle and Austintown food service director Tascin Brooks worked together with money they received from a grant to create a program that helps schools from all around the area create better lunch options for the students. This was the first time there has been a program for the food service staff and the food service directors hope to continue to raise money to keep providing the program for years to come. More than 30 people participated in a two-day, eight-hour class taught by Lauren McCabe, a chef from California. McCabe and Bernadette Paul, a dietitian, worked with each other to help the food service staff learn new techniques that the staff can use in their food preparation.
“It shows they care about what they’re doing that they’ll give up their days to come and do it. It’s not something they’re being forced to do, it’s something they chose to do. They’re very open to learn,” said Winkle. The staff learns more than preparing new dishes for students. They also learn about customer service and quality food. The food they are learning how to make was taken from a contest that students participated in where they created their own dish they would like to eat at school. “The most important thing of this training is to get all the food service professionals on the same page so that the students get consistent messages,” said Paul. Learning new and creative meals makes the students more excited to try new foods that they might not try on their own. The schools’ culinary service constantly tries to come up with innovative meals that follow the USDA guidelines while experimenting with ideas that would appeal to the students.

Happily Ever After Riches will celebrate 50th with family Samuel and Kathleen Rich of Austintown will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends July 16. Mr. a nd Mrs. Rich were ma rried July 16, 1966, at Holy Trinity Chapel in Campbell. Mrs. Rich worked in the loan processing department at Dollar Bank and retired in 2000. Mr. Rich was employed by GM Lordstown for 30 years and retired in 1994. He is a member of St. Joseph Church. Their children are Michelle (Ray) Penny, Thomas Rich and Robert Rich, all of Austintown. They have seven grandchildren.
Mr. & Mrs. White celebrate 50th anniversary Mr. and Mrs. John (Jeff) White of New Bern, N.C., formerly of Poland, marked their 50th anniversary June 11 with a celebration dinner at Holiday Inn in Boardman hosted by their family before embarking on a three-week cross country trip. Their children are John Jr. of Forest City, N.C., Amy of New Bern and Paul of Durham, N.C. They also have nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The former Cynthia Centofante and Mr. White were married June 17, 1966, in Columbia, S.C. Mrs. White works as a human resource assistant for Bosch and is a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, both in New Bern. Mr. White retired as a station manager served in Germany as a sergeant for two for FedEx and is a U.S. Army veteran. He years.

The former Charlotte McCusker married Mr. Allen on July 2, 1966, at Old Springfield United Church of Christ in New Middletown. Mrs. Allen owned and operated DiGiorgi Florist in Canfield before retiring. Mr. Allen worked as a tool and die maker at General Motors in Lordstown and retired in 2005. The couple are members of Mount Olivet United Church of Christ in North Lima. Their children and their spouses, who will host the dinner, are Don and Dacia Allen of Poland, Ryan and Kim Allen of Columbiana, and Carri and Jeff Austin of Canfield. They have nine grandchildren.
