New facility celebrated with two ribbon cuttings By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The Mahoning County Educational Service Center cut two ribbons to celebrate the opening of its new building, located on North Palmyra Road in Canfield, on Aug. 4. The Governing Boards of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center and the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center did the honors first. Then, nearly two dozen students representing Mahoning County Educational Service Center member districts and the more than 40,000 children served cut the second ribbon. Mahoning County Educational Service Center Superintendent Dr. Ronald Iarussi welcomed the large crowd to the ribbon cuttings. “Thank you for being here today. This is a very exciting day for all our districts. I would like to thank the many groups who are here today and the many community members. Thank you for coming out,” Iarussi said before the ribbons were cut. The $8.5 million building was completed on time, and on budget. Criteria Architect MS Consultants, Inc. and Olsavky Jaminet Architects, Inc. worked with Hammond Construction, using a Design-Build contract delivery method. This is fairly new to Ohio, and only allowed since Construction Reform enacted in July of 2011. Design-Build eliminates cost overruns and keeps the project
on budget, and better ensures top quality. The new building provides a central location for our nearly two dozen member school districts from Mahoning, Columbiana, Trumbull and Portage counties to collaborate. “The building is inviting and open, and includes state of the art technology that will allow valley educators to meet, and discuss ideas in a 21st century fashion,” said Iarussi. “The interactive abilities of the technology are sure to open new pathways for training for school administrators and staff.” After the ribbon cuttings, attendees were invited into the building for a short presentation and tours of the building. Mahoning County Career and Technical Center Governing Board President Beth Donofrio spoke to the large crowd. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in the construction and planning of this facility. The resources here at Mahoning County Educational Service Center are varied and many and are all in the name of education,” Donofrio said. Mahoning County Educational Service Center Governing Board President, Attorney Kathi McNabb Welsh, echoed Donofrio’s sentiments. “Today is a great day. This facility will offer creative, innovative and interactive 21st century public education inspired by Mahoning County’s rich diversity of students. Thank you to all who helped make this dream

Food service staff sharpen culinary skills By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Food ser v ice st a f f f rom schools all over the Mahoning Valley took classes taught by a professional chef on July 19-22 and July 26-27 to sharpen their culinary skills. Boa rd ma n food ser v ice director Natalie Winkle and Austintown food service director Tascin Brooks worked together with money they received from a grant to create a program that helps schools
from all around the area create better lunch options for the students. This was the first time there has been a program for the food service staff and the food service directors hope to continue to raise money to keep providing the program for years to come. More than 30 people participated in a two-day, eight-hour class taught by Lauren McCabe, a chef from California. McCabe and Bernadette Paul, a dietitian, worked with each
other to help the food service staff learn new techniques that the staff can use in their food preparation. “It shows they care about what they’re doing that they’ll give up their days to come and do it. It’s not something they’re being forced to do, it’s something they chose to do. They’re very open to learn,” said Winkle. The staff learns more than See CULINARY, Page 5

In-coming kindergartners learn about safety By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Ninety-five in-coming Canfield Local Schools kindergarten students came together for a day of safety instruction provided by Canfield PTO on Aug. 13. The soon-to-be kindergartners from Hilltop Elementary School and C.H. Campbell Elementary School participated in Kindergarten Safety Day at St. Michael’s Church. Kindergarten Safety Day was designed to teach and inform the children about important safety guidelines and included presentations from the Canfield Police Department, Canfield Fire Department, Canfield librar y, Hilltop Elementar y third-grade teacher Marie Rupert and Canfield Local Schools bus drivers. The children were scheduled to visit the four sta-
tions for 15 minutes each, rounding out the event with a bus ride to their respective elementary schools. The children were given name tags that were color coded and were instructed to follow the color coded corresponding schedule in the Safety Day informational handout they received at the registration table. Canfield Local Schools Resource Officer Steve Garstka of the Canfield Police Department focused on teaching the children pedestrian safety and stranger danger. The children were also able to check out the inside of a police cruiser. The Canfield Fire Department covered fire safety and described the firefighter’s gear and equipment they use during a fire and gave the children tips on what to do if there is ever a fire at
their home. The children also checked out all aspects of the fire truck and were given plastic fire helmets and stickers. Hilltop Elementary thirdgrade teacher Marie Rupert talked to the children about staying healthy in kindergarten and gave them a lesson on how to not spread germs, while a representative from the Canfield library read the children school safety books. The Bus Drivers Association provided four buses and eight bus drivers to educate the children and their parents on school bus safety. The drivers focused on showing the students how to get safely on the bus, the rules that need to be followed while on the bus and how to safely get off the bus. This year, one parent was able to ride with the student so both the student and the parent were educated on bus safety and procedures. The bus drivers also handed out a Bus Safety Rules brochure. Once the students and their parents boarded the buses, they were taken to either Hilltop El-
ementary School or C.H. Campbell Elementary School, where they were shown how to exit the bus and enter the school. W hen the buses returned from students’ first bus ride, all attendees gathered back in the Family Life Center for the conclusion of the program, which included each soon-to-be kindergartner receiving a Safety Day gift bag and a personalized Safety Day certificate. Inside the goody bag was coloring books donated by State Farm Insurance Agent Jason Reckard and crayons, the book “The Night Before Kindergarten” and a snack, all provided by the PTO. Sha nnon Eddy ser ves as C.H. Campbell PTO chair, with Shannon Raptis serving as C.H. Campbell PTO co-chair. Julie Kwaiser-Miller serves as Hilltop Elementary PTO Chair. “Kindergarten Safety Day is a collaborative effort between Hilltop Elementary School and C.H. Campbell Elementar y School. We have PTO volunteers here from both schools helping out,” said Julie Kwaiser-Miller.

Cardinal Mooney hosts cheerleading camp The Cardinal Mooney High School cheerleaders hosted their 16th annual cheer camp on the CMHS campus grounds on Aug. 2-4 to promote school spirit, fellowship and physical fitness for more than 100 girls between the grades of kindergarten and eighth. Under the direction of advisor, Leslie Groubert, the CMHS Cheer Squad mentored campers in various clinics on cheer style, safety and spirit motivation.
All campers received a t-shirt and participated in a cheer exhibition on Aug. 4 for parents. In addition, eighth-grade campers had the opportunity to participate in an All-Star tryout for the chance to cheer with the CMHS cheerleaders at a home football game this fall with all seventh- and eighthgrade squads invited to cheer at this year’s Mooney-Ursuline rally.

A ria Gu zzett i, her sister, Rihanna Guzzetti, and brother, Brenton Bush, might be only 2, 5 and 11, respectively, and nowhere near old enough to attend high school, but they share one important characteristic with those in caps and gow ns at com mencement: They have earned diplomas. “The kids like bugs, and this is a nice, free event,” said their father, Neil Guzzetti, after the three East Palestine youngsters had received their “Master of Bugology” diplomas. Their accomplishment was courtesy of having successfully gone through at least six of 10 stations that made up Mill Creek MetroParks’ Bug Day program at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road (state Route 46). The six-hour gathering offered a variety of activities, exhibits and games, along with live and preserved displays to better educate people of all ages “about some of nature’s less-loved creatures,” noted Carol Vigorito, the MetroParks’ recreation and education director. “Learning about bugs is a fun process,” added the children’s mother, Sheila Guzzetti. The youngsters listed praying mantises, ladybugs and spiders as their favorite insects. Main attractions were a live honeybee exhibit that featured information on pollination, five long tables covered with framed butterfly and moth collections and a series of small microscopes under which to examine a black widow spider, a dragonf ly, ticks, honeybee wings, a louse and the head of a mosquito. Another draw for many attendees was part of Jim Smolka’s collection of unusual small creatures in containers such as an 8-inch Vietnamese giant centipede, an Arizona desert hairy scorpion, several varieties of Mexican tarantulas and a giant African assassin bug. Smolka, of Hinckley, spent
about 15 years in integratedpest management for the Ohio State University Extension Service and conducts occasional demonstrations in park districts throughout Northeast Ohio, he said. During one such effort Sunday, Smolka had in his hand a unicorn beet le, t he likes of which are common in the southeastern U.S., especially in Georgia and Florida. Nevertheless, the insects can migrate as far north as the Ohio River in southern Ohio, he noted. They had neither the speed nor the size of competitions at Indianapolis 500 events, but a series of maggot races were an exciting draw for many. MetroParks volunteers Vince Tr inckes a nd Linda Mi l ler oversaw the fun competitions in which one maggot each was placed under a cup in the center of six circular pieces of cardboard. Small prizes were given to those whose tiny insects were the first to reach the edge of the cardboard slabs. Other children seemed content to engage in less hands-on interactions with insects, such as those who opted to color on pieces of paper over plastic stencils and create impressions of various insects. Happy to do so were brothers Gionni Vince, 4, and Bryson, 9, of Struthers, who quickly formed on their papers images of a carpenter ant and a fly caught in a spider web. “He is a bug fanatic,” said the boys’ father, Pete Vince, referring to Gionni. “He always wants to go to the park to see bugs,” their mother, Melissa Vince, added. Other festivities included stories about insects, hunts for various bugs in a nearby field and “bug bingo” with 24 insects per card. Winners took home small plastic bug replicas. Bug Day was the idea of popular former MetroParks naturalist Ray Novotny, who started the program a few decades ago, noted Vigorito, the recreation and education director. In addition, the event was to

help people form a deeper perspective on and understanding of the purpose of insects that many find annoying, irritating and a nuisance, she continued. “I hope they learn that everything has a place in nature,” Vigorito said. “It’s important to have those insects at the bottom of the food chain; otherwise, we would not have things at the top of the food chain.”
