As has occurred for many years, on the Sunday morning of the Canfield Fair (Sept. 4 this year), singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 a.m. Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service. A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service. Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Canfield Fair steps up measures for Swine Flu The Canfield Fair will remove all hogs from the fairgrounds at the closing of the fair on Sept. 1, following the judging and auctions. The decision was reached after careful consideration and discussions with the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the United States Department of Agriculture, the State Veterinarian and the Canfield Fair Veterinarian.

Due to the recently confirmed cases of H3N2 – commonly known as Swine Flu – at an Ohio county fair, the Canfield Fair is taking all necessary steps for the health and safety of fairgoers. “While it is unfortunate we cannot host the hogs for the duration of the Fair, we want to honor the time and commitment the junior fair contestants have put in to the raising of

these animals, but still keep the health of our fairgoers a top priority, ” Bev Fisher, Canfield Fair Manager, said. The Canfield Fair encourages fairgoers to visit its website, canfieldfair.com, for further updates on the situation. There were also Lego cars the children could race their cars against. Saunders and Yingling demonstrated how the cars would go down the ramp and had the children guess which car would win. “The Lego cars were created by other children who attended our Lego program once a month here,” said Saunders. The children headed over to the tables to create their own cars to race. Children used clothespins, Styrofoam, push pins and other materials to create and decorate a car to race. There was enough material for each child to create two of their own cars. When the children finished making their cars, they would race t hem dow n t he ra mps against the other cars. Lynn Cardwell instructed a class at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Aug. 9 to teach guests how to make fused glass pendants. T hose who at tended t he fused glass pendant workshop had the opportunity to create two of their own pendants to be added to a necklace. Cardwell brought in samples of what the pendants were going to look like in four weeks after she fired them. The samples gave the attendees an idea of what they might want to do for their own pendant. One of the guests attending made his own sun catcher instead of a necklace pendant. Cardwell demonstrated how to assemble the pendants using pieces of colored glass and glue. Guests would choose what color base piece of glass they wanted then they would choose a few colors to glue on top of the base. The decorative pieces of glass could be cut into different sizes so more colors could be added on the base.

Kindergarten students practice safety lessons for school By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Just under 140 children attended the Safety Village program at Boardman Glenwood Middle School on Aug. 11 to practice and learn safety procedures before they start kindergarten. The Boardman PTA worked with the United Way and other Boardman board members to get the Safety Village program back after skipping a year in 2015. Safety Village, part of the Success by 6 program by the United Way, helps children entering kindergarten become used to the idea of being at school. “Mr. Lazzeri was adamant that we get this going again,” said Tanna Sebrell, PTA council member and event coordinator.

The children were divided up into groups of 15-20 children and each school had two groups. The groups would work in rotation and visit each of the four main stations including two fire safety stations, a police safety station and a bus safety station. Sgt. Charles Hillman of the Boardman Police Department, several Boardman firemen and Tom Davies, director of transportation, led the different stations and taught the children the importance of safety at each station. The students learn everything the police, fire and transportation department think the students should know as they enter their first year of school. “We thought it was really important to let them get to know a couple of the teachers’ faces

and kind of make a friend with somebody so the first day of school, they know someone,” said Sebrell. The collaboration of the PTA, school administration, United Way and more than 40 volunteers demonstrated how the community wants to make sure the children are prepared. The volunteers took time out of their schedules to come to Safety Village to bring important safety knowledge to the students. “I think it’ll be bigger next year because it’ll be at the end of Success by 6 again.
