they left off last year,” said Nick Crescimanno. Not only were the students able to build their own robots, they were also treated to an eye tracking demonstration by Dr. Sharif. Much to their delight and awe, several students were even able to try out the eye tracking program on a laptop. Crescimanno said the purpose of the camp is to get the students interested in robotics at a young age. “The purpose of this camp is to expose young students in grades five through eight to robotics and STEM elements, which they are not otherwise exposed to. This is a chance for them to get their feet wet. It’s a fun way for them to learn about programming, robots, applications and have handson physical interaction. They are at a young age and now is the time to get them involved and excited about robotics and plant the seed,” Crescimanno said. Case in point is CVMS fifthgrader Erica Kovach. “This is my first year coming to this camp. I wanted to come because the camp sounded cool and interesting and I wanted to learn how to program stuff. I am having fun and I am learning,” Kovach said. Crescimanno stressed the importance of the need for parental and community volunteers to help make the camp a success. “We want to grow the program and make it even better. To accomplish that, we really need parental involvement and volunteers of both parents

Canfield Fair steps up measures for Swine Flu The Canfield Fair will remove all hogs from the fairgrounds at the closing of the fair on Sept. 1, following the judging and auctions. The decision was reached after careful consideration and discussions with the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the United States Department of Agriculture, the State Veterinarian and the Canfield Fair Veterinarian.
Due to the recently confirmed cases of H3N2 – commonly known as Swine Flu – at an Ohio county fair, the Canfield Fair is taking all necessary steps for the health and safety of fairgoers. “While it is unfortunate we cannot host the hogs for the duration of the Fair, we want to honor the time and commitment the junior fair contestants have put in to the raising of
these animals, but still keep the health of our fairgoers a top priority, ” Bev Fisher, Canfield Fair Manager, said. The Canfield Fair encourages fairgoers to visit its website, canfieldfair.com, for further updates on the situation. Quarter auction aims to raise awareness for alopecia areata By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
In an effort to raise awareness and funds for alopecia areata, a Quarter Auction will take place at St. Charles Parish Hall in Boardman on Sept. 18. All proceeds from the Quarter Auction will be donated to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. “The goal of this Quarter Auction is to raise awareness and funds for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. September is National Alopecia Areata Awareness Month, so we thought this was the perfect time to hold the event,” said Nancy Mikos, event organizer. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease resulting in the loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. Alopecia areata patches usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth bald patches on the scalp or elsewhere. Total scalp hair loss is alopecia areata totalis. Complete body hair loss is alopecia areata universalis. Alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis are considered rare diseases. Alopecia areata affects approximately 2 percent of the population overall, including more than 6.5 million people in the U.S. and 145 million people worldwide. Currently, there is no cure for alopecia areata. The National Alopecia Areata Foundation has launched a seven-year first phase Alopecia Treatment Development Program to find an acceptable
treatment. Treatment options are limited at this time and depend upon the extent of hair loss. No one treatment works well for every person. During the Quarter Auction, various items will be available to bid on. Based on the value of the item, guests will bid quarters. For example, bidders could win a $25 item for a two quarter bid. Item values are determined by vendors and announced for each item. A one quarter bid is required for items valued at $1 to $19.99; a two quarter bid is required for items valued at $20 to $39.99; a three quarter bid is required for items va lued at $40 to $59.99 and a four quarter bid is required for items valued at $60 and up. Tickets must be purchased in advance for the event, as seating is limited. Admission is $5 and tickets may be purchased by calling Jen Kreps at 330-550-2180 or Dina DiVincenzo at 330-718-0994. The admission fee includes entrance into all door prize drawings and one bidding paddle. Reserved tables are available for eight or more guests only. St. Charles Parish Hall is located at 7345 Westview Drive in Boardman. Doors open at 4:15 p.m., with the auction to start at 5 p.m. Guests should bring their own quarters. An ‘All In Paddle’ will be available to purchase. Pizza and beverages will be available to purchase and ‘Bring Your Own Food’ is permitted.

Lynn Cardwell instructed a class at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Aug. 9 to teach guests how to make fused glass pendants. Those who attended t he fused glass pendant workshop had the opportunity to create two of their own pendants to be added to a necklace. Cardwell brought in samples of what the pendants were going to look like in four weeks after she fired them. The samples gave the attendees an idea of what they might want to do for their own pendant. One of the guests attending made his own sun catcher instead of a necklace pendant. Cardwell demonstrated how to assemble the pendants using pieces of colored glass and glue. Guests would choose what color base piece of glass they wanted then they would choose a few colors to glue on top of the base. The decorative pieces of glass could be cut into different sizes so more colors could be added on the base. Neighbors wants fall sports news Fall sports have begun and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you com-
mit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.
