Austintown Fitch High School introduced a new program on Aug. 23 to help give students entering freshman year and a new building an easier transition. There were 86 of the top juniors and seniors chosen to become Link Leaders, or mentors, to the incoming freshman students. Every Link Leader has a group of 10 freshman that they help mentor throughout the school year. The mentors attended 10 hours of training throughout a period of two days. During this training session the mentors learned what the faculty members learned during their training session in Detroit. The four hour session on Aug. 23 brought the mentors and their mentees together for the first time to learn about each other and about the high school. The mentorship and transition program will help strengthen the freshmen’s relationship to the high school. “We really want our freshman to know that they’re valued and supported. We also want them to learn the Falcon way,” said Assistant Principal Dave Purins. T h e r e a r e c h e c k p o i nt s planned throughout the year for the freshman to meet with their mentors. They will attend football games and other types

Mill Creek hosts historical day at Idora Falls By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Mill Creek MetroParks hosted a Day at Idora Falls event on Aug. 13 at Lanterman’s Mill. The morning and afternoon was dedicated to showing the history of Lanterman’s Mill, Idora Park and Youngstown. Guests could come and see the mill inside Lanterman’s in motion, food, activities and crafts. There were tables set up with posters and information the
guests could learn from to get an idea of what Youngstown, Lanterman’s Mill and Idora Park used to be like. The Day at Idora Falls was to celebrate the waterfall adjacent to Lanterman’s Mill getting one of its previous names, Idora Falls, back. Idora Falls was a name shared with a famous 20th-century amusement park, Idora Park, in Youngstown. This year is the park’s 125th anniversary making the event even more special and impactful.
In the morning there was a hike to Idora Falls that guests could participate in that would bring them to Lanterman’s Mill to enjoy the festivities. The g u ided h i ke prov ided information about the park, Idora Falls and Lanterman’s Mill. The Day at Idora Falls has been put on by the park before, but this year the Metropark looked to expand into more of it’s surroundings to include in the day of activities.

The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley hosted its ninth annual Buddy Walk of the Valley on Aug. 13 at the Shops at Boardman. The DSAV is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that was founded in 2007. The organization was created to provide support and resources for families with a member who has Down Syndrome. The Buddy Walk is an annual fundraising event that several people attend every year to show their support and promote inclusion of those with Down Syndrome. More than 1,500 people registered for the walk this year to show their support for those with Down Syndrome. The money that is raised comes from the registration fee, the raffle baskets, snacks provided at the walk and several other donations. All of the basket raffle items were donated from local businesses or communities. “Ninety-three percent of the money raised goes to DSAV to help us provide support, re-
sources, education, advocacy and opportunity for individuals with Down Syndrome, their families and our communities throughout eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Seven percent of the money raised goes to the National Down Syndrome Society for national advocacy and support,” said Lindsey Morris, the programming and events coordinator for DSAV. The funds that are given back to the DSAV are used for grants, scholarships, workshops, different walks and awareness events and several other programs to help families who has a member with Down Syndrome. The Buddy Walk is open to everyone who would like to participate in raising awareness. There was a pre-registration option and an online donation option for those who wanted to support the walk, but wouldn’t be able to attend in person. The Buddy Walk is the largest fundraiser for DSAV. The proceeds raised from the Buddy Walk of the Valley provide about 80 percent of the resources for the DSAV to complete its mission throughout the year.
