Explore cub scouting in Mahoning county Cub Scouting is a year round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 years of age). Cub Scouting is the largest of the Boy Scouts of America’s three traditional membership programs with approx. 1.7 million boys and their families involved throughout the United States. The beginning of the school year is the traditional time for boys and their families to join Cub Scouts but a boy can join at any time. Boardman Band Night Sept. 10 The Boardman Spartan Marching Band and the Boardman Band and Orchestra Parents, Inc. will host Boardman Band Night ’16 on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. in the new Boardman Stadium on the high school campus. Participating high school bands include Springfield, West Branch, Lowellville, Austintown, Canfield, Howland and the Boardman Spartan Marching Band. Admission at the gates is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Senior citizens are admitted free to all Boardman Band events. Greenbriar benefit concert The Commons at Greenbriar will be hosting a concert to benefit Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana to help send Deanna to the Florida Theme Parks. This concert will feature Party of Two, an acoustic music duo, and will take place on Sept. 15 from 6:30-8 p.m. The cost will be $5 and includes refreshments. Furry friends visit Greenbriar residents By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Dogs from the Animal Charity of Ohio visited Greenbriar in Boardman on Aug. 21 hoping to find a forever home. This is the first time Greenbriar has had animals from the Animal Charity of Ohio to visit. The residents were excited to have the opportunity to play and interact with all three dogs. “The residents were talking to me about trying to get animals in here,” said Activities Director Meghan Miller. “They wanted to do something to help the animals.” The event was open for people in the community to come and look at the different animals that were up for adoption. Greenbriar advertised on their Facebook page to bring awareness to the event and try to help the animals find a home. “We are always looking for adoption events, volunteers to

come out and walk the animals, take them for a car ride, take them to the park, those kinds of things,” said Amy Manolio, Vice President of the Animal Charity Board. Animals Charity of Ohio has two facilities where the animals are taken care of. All of the animals are spayed or neutered, are vaccinated and are ready to be adopted. There is a special offer for veterans who wish to adopt a senior dog at a discounted price. Animal Charity is a little different from other rescues because they are the only non-profit who has humane agents in Mahoning County. All of the animals are taken from bad situations and are looking to find a better home. At the end of the visit, all three dogs that visited Greenbriar were in the process of being adopted into their new homes with new families. GA to meet Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Boardman Park to host family day and camp out Boardman Park invites the public to an Outdoor Family Day to enjoy the great outdoors in their community’s recreational haven the Green Oasis. Outdoor Family Day will take place on Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item donation for a local food bank. Bring the entire family to enjoy activities such as archery, fishing, deer blind demo, taxidermy animals, live snakes,

Buddy Walk promotes Down Syndrome awareness By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley hosted its ninth annual Buddy Walk of the Valley on Aug. 13 at the Shops at Boardman. The DSAV is a 501c3 non-profit organization that was founded in 2007. The organization was created to provide support and resources for families with a member who has Down Syndrome. The Buddy Walk is an annual fundraising event that several people attend every year to show their support and pro-

mote inclusion of those with Down Syndrome. More than 1,500 people registered for the walk this year to show their support for those with Down Syndrome. The money that is raised comes from the registration fee, the raffle baskets, snacks provided at the walk and several other donations. All of the basket raffle items were donated from local businesses or communities. “Ninety-three percent of the money raised goes to DSAV to help us provide support, resources, education, advocacy and opportunity for individu-

als with Down Syndrome, their families and our communities throughout eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Seven percent of the money raised goes to the National Down Syndrome Society for national advocacy and support,” said Lindsey Morris, the programming and events coordinator for DSAV. The funds that are given back to the DSAV are used for grants, scholarships, workshops, different walks and awareness events and several other programs to

The Boardman library hosted a special parachute- and colorthemed story time on Aug. 17. Karen Saunders, a youth librarian, led the story time with stories and activities with rainbow parachutes. The children sat behind the story snakes as Saunders read the books “Ten Hungry Rabbits” and “Brown Bear” to emphasize the theme of colors. papers with food on them from “Ten Hungry Rabbits.” When that colored food was brought up in the book, the children put their food and color paper on the white board. For the book “Brown Bear” some of the children received one of the animals from the book and others received colors of paper. As each animal was mentioned in the book, the child with that animal would stand in the front until all characters were called. After Saunders finished the stories, the children divided into two groups for the younger

and older children. Both groups got a rainbow parachute to play with that would be used for other activities. Saunders placed two balls on each of the parachutes and the children had to bounce the balls up and down and try to not let them hit the floor. The other activity Saunders had the children participate in was a game of animal hide and seek. A few stuffed animals would be put under the parachute and one of the children had to guess what color panels the animals were under. Story time programs are offered several times at the Boardman library throughout the month. The next story time will be on Aug. 24 and will be all about chalk.

The family includes 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. Spotleson and the former Jane Carbon were married May 5, 1956, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Youngstown. They are members of St. Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown. Mrs. Spotleson worked as a scheduler for Joe’s Home Appliance Repair in Boardman, which her husband founded and where he

worked as a technician. Both are retired. Mr. Spotleson served in the U.S. Army in Italy during the Korean conflict.
