“We like to get the younger girls in here early so they can progress each year as they get older. We have a lot of fun with the young ones. Our high school cheerleaders love teaching the girls and we could not do this without all the hard work of our girls,” Williams said. This year, the theme was Disney, which Williams said was meant to be an inspiration to the young girls. “Disney is our theme this year. It was the theme at our high school cheer camp this year and we wanted to bring it home to share with our young campers. Disney movies serve as an inspiration for kids to be anything they want to be and follow their dreams. Besides learning cheers and chants here, we want the girls to also learn to be a good person,” Williams said. Each age group was taught a dance and to showcase their talents and what the girls learned at the three-day camp, a performance took place at the end of the third day, during which each group performed cheers and a dance for their parents and fellow attendees. Williams welcomed the large audience to the camp-ending show. “Thank you for coming out today. I would like to start with thanking the high school cheerleaders for all their hard work during this camp. They did an amazing job with our campers. I would also like to thank the

17 cheer moms for all their help this week. This camp would not be possible without you. You have all been a huge help. Our theme this year is Disney and we wanted our campers to be inspired by what Disney movies portray, which is you can so anything you put your heart to. Thank you again and enjoy our show,” Williams said. The show started with a performance by all CHS cheerleaders, followed by the Canfield Little Cardinals seventh- and eighth-grade squads and then
all campers and CHS cheerleaders danced to “Hang on Sloopy.” Continuing with the show were the 3- and 4-year-old group, the 5- and 6-year-old group, the freshman cheer squad, the 7 and up group, the Canfield Little Cardinals 115 squad, the seventh-grade squad, the Canfield Little Cardinals 135 squad, the eighth-grade squad and the Canfield Little Cardinals 155 squad. The CHS junior varsity squad then performed for the large crowd, with the varsity cheerleaders ending the show with their performance. CHS senior cheerleader Sophia D’Alesio said she hopes the
young campers were inspired by the Disney theme. “I had so much fun working with the young girls this week. We wanted to integrate the Disney theme we had at our team camp into this camp. Every year Coach Ashley picks a team word. This year she pick ‘Ohana,’ which means family. We wanted to pass this down this theme of family to all the cheerleaders at our kiddie camp and hope that they are inspired to do whatever they want to do,” D”Alesio said. The camp is a fundraiser for the cheer squads and each camper received a T-shirt and hair bow.

Mill Creek MetroParks hosted a Day at Idora Falls event on Aug. 13 at Lanterman’s Mill. The morning and afternoon was dedicated to showing the history of Lanterman’s Mill, Idora Park and Youngstown. Guests could come and see the mill inside Lanterman’s in motion, food, activities and crafts. There were tables set up with posters and information the
guests could learn from to get an idea of what Youngstown, Lanterman’s Mill and Idora Park used to be like. The Day at Idora Falls was to celebrate the waterfall adjacent to Lanterman’s Mill getting one of its previous names, Idora Falls, back. Idora Falls was a name shared with a famous 20th-century amusement park, Idora Park, in Youngstown. This year is the park’s 125th anniversary making the event even more special and impactful.
In the morning there was a hike to Idora Falls that guests could participate in that would bring them to Lanterman’s Mill to enjoy the festivities. The g u ided h i ke prov ided information about the park, Idora Falls and Lanterman’s Mill. The Day at Idora Falls has been put on by the park before, but this year the Metropark looked to expand into more of it’s surroundings to include in the day of activities.

Canfield Village Middle School’s Michael Crawford (25) is pictured bursting through the Alliance defense on Aug. 31.
Ca n f ield V i l lage Midd le School seventh-graders opened their 2016 campaign with a 36-0 victory over Alliance on a rainsoaked Bob Dove Field on Aug. 31. Canfield opened the scoring on their first possession when quarterback Paolo Papalia hit Toby Smith in the right flat with
a 30-yard scoring strike. The drive covered 65 yards in five plays and was keyed by a 23yard strike from Papalia to Conner Julian. The two hooked up again for the 2-point conversion and a 8-0 lead. The Cardinals struck again in the waning moments of the first half when Papalia scam-
pered 2-yards around right end to paydirt. Papalia then found tight end Jake Grdic in the end zone for the 2-point conversion to make it 16-0 at the half. Canfield stretched their advantage to 22-0 in the third quarter when Michael Crawford darted 15 yards for the touchdown. The home team struck again moments later when Drew Carrocce rumbled in from 13 yards out and Oliver Kovass tacked on the conversion to make it 30-0. Toby Charnesky raced 15 yards on a fourth and one to round out the scoring. Papalia finished the day 6 of 12 through the air for 81 yards and a touchdown; he also tossed two 2-point conversions. Crawford led all rushers with 47 yards on five totes, while the fullback tandem of Smith and Carrocce combined for 58 yards on seven carries. Canfield’s defense was stellar throughout, led by Ryan Hively, AJ Wise, Anthony Canacci, Grdic and Ian Hull. Coach Donadee cited offensive linemen Chris DeDonato, Ryan Bennet and Andrew Seaman for their play.
CVMS eighth-grade football Neighbors | Submitted
The Canfield Village Middle School eighth-graders opened their 2016 season with a hard fought 12-12 tie versus the visiting Alliance Aviators. Alliance struck first on a long aerial to take a 6-0 advantage. Canfield responded by driving the length of the field to tie it up behind the hard running of Chris Sammarone and Tony Pannunzio. Canfield appeared to take the lead late in the first half on a Ethan Fletcher to Pannunzio scoring toss, but a holding penalty negated the play. Alliance stuck again through the air late in the fourth to take a 12-6 lead. Canfield mounted a furious comeback driving 65 yards in under 2 minutes to knot the score when Fletcher sprinted 8 yards to paydirt. The Cardinals 2-point try fell just short of the mark for the final margin. Pictured is Canfield quarterback Ethan Fletcher handing the ball to Tony Pannunzio.

Buddy Walk promotes Down Syndrome awareness By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley hosted its ninth annual Buddy Walk of the Valley on Aug. 13 at the Shops at Boardman. The DSAV is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that was founded in 2007. The organization was created to provide support and resources for families with a member who has Down Syndrome. The Buddy Walk is an annual fundraising event that several people attend every year to show their support and promote inclusion of those with Down Syndrome. More than 1,500 people registered for the walk this year to show their support for those with Down Syndrome. The money that is raised comes from the registration fee, the raffle baskets, snacks provided at the walk and several other donations. All of the basket raffle items were donated from local businesses or communities. “Ninety-three percent of the money raised goes to DSAV to help us provide support, resources, education, advocacy
and opportunity for individuals with Down Syndrome, their families and our communities throughout eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Seven percent of the money raised goes to the National Down Syndrome Society for national advocacy and support,” said Lindsey Morris, the programming and events coordinator for DSAV. The funds that are given back to the DSAV are used for grants, scholarships, workshops, different walks and awareness events and several other programs to help families who has a member with Down Syndrome. The Buddy Walk is open to everyone who would like to participate in raising awareness. There was a pre-registration option and an online donation option for those who wanted to support the walk, but wouldn’t be able to attend in person. The Buddy Walk is the largest fundraiser for DSAV. The proceeds raised from the Buddy Walk of the Valley provide about 80 percent of the resources for the DSAV to complete its mission throughout the year.
