Book Club members enjoy tea and mystery at Austintown library by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
The Tea and Mystery Book Club met on Sept. 12 in the small meeting room in the Austintown library to discuss literature. Librarian Lindsay Platt led the book club. The club does not all read the same book, as
some of the library’s other book clubs do. They all read different material and discuss the stories together instead. Platt began discussion by talking the books she read in the last month, “Pretty Girls“ by Karin Slaughter and “The Ex“ by Alafair Burke. Other members in the group had read Peter
Lovesey’s “The Vault“ and Jill McGown’s “Death in the Family.“ The style of the book club allows others to get good book recommendations and come back to talk about that book in a future meeting. However, the discussions can sometimes be difficult because the person
talking about a book has to tiptoe around the plot to avoid ruining a book for the other members. For example, the member discussing Lovesey’s novel often stopped herself and said “without giving too much away,“ and tried to explain parts of the story without spoiling it. The conversations on specific stories turned into a general discourse on mysteries. Some of the discussions went into other media, such as radio plays and movies, but some stayed in literature, like their conversation of praise for Agatha Christie. The Tea and Mystery book club meet the first or second Tuesday of every month. The group welcomes new members and does not require registration. Each meeting has tea for participants of the club.

We are descendants of adventurers, travelers and slaves. Our ancestors came to America willingly or by force, seeking escape from oppression or to become, for a time, the oppressed. Some came for opportunity and the rule of law, some for religious freedom and the right to own property. Whether they came as colonists or as 21st Century New Americans, many left documented “footprints” that serve as our passport back through time to our ancestors’ origins. This crucial part of genealogical research involves careful examination of historical records. Records discussed include passenger lists, citizenship and naturalization records, border crossings and passports, crew lists, immigration and emigration books, slave manifests, border crossings and passport applications. This event is for adults and teens on Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library.
Mill Creek Metroparks hosted a Children’s Nature Hour event on the eastern box turtle at the Ford Nature Center on Aug. 10. Marilyn Williams lead the event in the upstairs of the Ford Nature Center. To start, she read a book to the children that explained much of the turtle’s eating habits and unique characteristics, such as how it lives
in wooded areas and cannot swim. Each page had a picture for the children to see the turtle. Williams had a crafted eastern box turtle shell to show the children the qualities it holds, like a high bump. After the story, Williams gave the students paint and a small paper plate to design their own turtle shells. Later, the children received green paper and glue to paste the paper to the plate to

make it look more like a turtle. The children also got a block to stamp different colors on the plate to look like the eastern box turtle’s shell. The group went on a small hike around the Virginia J. Axemann Nature Trail For All People and into the area behind the nature center. Along the trail, Williams pointed out several areas where the eastern box turtle would hide, eat or drink. The group also pointed out other wildlife present in the area, such as caterpillars and a hummingbird. Williams led everyone back inside to meet the eastern box turtle that the nature center has in an observatory room. One of the children found a worm on the ground while in the back area, and Williams fed the worm to the turtle so the children could watch it eat. Then, Williams brought the turtle out for the children to touch, watch it walk around and point out the characteristics brought up in the book earlier. Easy Street closed out Live! At the Morley series with a blast By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Easy Street played a concert at the Judge Morley Pavilion on Aug. 16 as a part of Mill Creek’s Live! At the Morley summer concert series. The band covered a number of hit songs, starting with “Route 66“ by Nat King Cole. The audience got to know the Easy Street Little Big Band led by musical director Jeff Sanders and the groups’ five singers, Maureen Collins, Todd Hancock, James McClellan, Colleen Chance and Natalie Sprouse, over the course of the night. Most of the songs
were oldies hits from the 50s and 60s and included both pop and country songs. The crowd enjoyed the show that Easy Street gave them. A older couple danced during the opener and children ran and danced in front of the stage for the majority of the show. Local artist Leanne Binder received a warm welcome from the audience. When Hancock and the band started Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,“ the crowd happily clapped along. The group also played songs like “Love Me Tender“ and “Heartbreak Hotel“ to commemorate
the 40th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death. The Little Rascals came on stage and sang about halfway into the show. The Little Rascals are a group of children that Collins works with at the Adler Arts Academy Studios. These workshops run throughout the summer and end with performance at the Live! At the Morley concert. A single boy sang the first song, “Everywhere Man“ by Johnny Cash. The other children joined him on the chorus. The Little Rascals also sang “Fight Song“ by Rachel Platten
and “Walking on Sunshine“ by Katrina and the Waves. Easy Street Productions has played the final concert of Mill Creek’s Live! At the Morley every year since the event started in 1994. Collins and Hancock founded Easy Street Productions in 1988 and have put on Broadway shows such as “Annie“ in Edward W. Powers Auditorium. They will be putting on “Peter and the Starcatcher“ on Nov. 1012 at DeYor’s Ford Family Recital Hall. Live ! At the Morley runs throughout summer every year.
Authors & their worlds Match the authors with the worlds they created during the month of September at the Austintown library. Turn into the librarian and receive a prize. This event is for school-age children in grades K-6.
“Dragons Love Tacos” Go to the Austintown library on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. for a program on “Dragons Love Tacos.” Based on the best-selling books by Adam Rubin, the library’s fiesta includes story time, games and a taco craft bar. This is nacho average program, so bring the whole family. Snacks will be served. This event is for children of all ages.

Librarian Allison Graf stamped her feet during the song “Can’t Wait to Celebrate” at Austintown library’s Gotta Move Story Time designed to get children up and moving.
Austintown library delivers educational workout for children By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Austintown library hosted a Gotta Move story time event on Aug. 17 to get children active while teaching learning skills. Librarian Allison Graf greeted the children as they walked into the main meeting room and sat on the floor. Many children came to the event, as it is one of the more popular events the library does. The group danced, sang and read throughout the event, but they never stopped focusing on learning. The children first ran freely in an exercise similar to the Red Light/Green Light game where children run until instructed to freeze by Graf. The game works on the children’s listening skills as they await for Graf to tell them to freeze. Similarly, the first song played, “Can’t Wait to Celebrate,“ asks the children to dance and follow the directions the song gave them, such as stamping their feet or clapping. They also listened to “Bop Til You Drop.“ The dance that follows the song requires the children to dance and fall on command.
The children also worked on their number and reading skills. The group counted all the children in the room and then counted all the adults separately. Later, Graf rolled a dice with a different workout on each side. Then, Graf rolled two bigger number dice to see how many repetitions of that exercise they will do. After she rolled the dice, she had the children add the dice amounts together to work on their addition skills. They did nine pushups and six jumping jacks. The children also read two books with Graf. The first book kept everyone active through yoga. Each page of the book showed a different bug along with a yoga pose. The children performed these poses. The second book, “Hop Jump,“ described the jumping techniques of animals. Austintow n librar y has a Gotta Move Story Time every Thursday morning and it has become somewhat popular. Each session is designed to combine movement activities and workouts to literary skills. The books read and CDs listened to are all available to check out at the library.
Fitch won 4-3 in a very emotional and intense game. Striking first was Canfield at the 13th minute mark when RJ Thomas hit a laser into the net. Fitch senior Blake Baker found the net from distance to make it 1-1 at the half. In the second,

Baker scored again, but Canfield answered seven minutes later with a Will Files goal. Fitch keeper Trevor Hykes saved a PK and the rebound to keep things level. CJ Sobien scored from a great cross from Mitch Desiato and Baker slotted home a PK to go up 4-2. Canfield senior Alec Simone made it 4-3 when he scored a PK and a couple of Cardinal shots that just hit the bar ended the game with an unbelievable Falcon win. Scorling goals for the Falcons were Blake Baker (3) and CJ Sobien (1). Assists for Austintown were Chad Phillips (1) and Mitch Desiato (1) with saves from Trevor Hykes (7).
