Blasko attends STEM forum By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Ca n f ield V i l lage M idd le School eighth-grader Eliza Blasko attended the National Youth Leadership Forum: Explore STEM program at Loyola University June 25-30. Blasko, daughter of Rich and Paula Blasko, was nominated to attend the program by CVMS teacher Dominique Tozzi. Outstanding middle school students from across the nation took part in the National Youth Leadership Forum: Explore STEM, which is a unique academic development experience. The forum’s mission is to inspire scholars to explore career possibilities in the fields of

science, technology, engineering and mathematics. “The forum I attended was a great experience. I made new friends from all over the country and learned a lot about STEM and leadership skills. I wanted to go to see if I would like a job in this field when I grew up. Also, I knew that it would be a positive aspect on my resume in the future. When I grow up I would like to be a marine biologist,” Blasko said. Students who attend the program participate in a broad range of interactive simulations, hands-on workshops and educational site visits to discover the work of today’s professionals in fields, such as engineer-

ing, health care and environmental science. Scholars of the program also learned to develop critical success skills, such as time management, conflict resolution, information analysis, collaboration and public speaking. Blasko’s parents are happy to see Eliza recognized for her hard work and are proud of her academic accomplishments. “It was an honor for Eliza to be nominated and recognized for her hard work in the classroom. We were very impressed with the Envision program from the first initial contact through Eliza’s six day stay in Chicago. The forum provided her with a quality educational experience

as well as skills that she will use throughout her lifetime. She should be very proud of this accomplishment, as we are,“ said Rich and Paula Blasko. National Youth Leadership Forum: Explore STEM is part of the Envision family of programs, which enable students of all ages to explore their interests and gain learning experiences beyond the classroom. Since 1985, Envision programs have served more than 500,000 students in more than 145 countries. Envision programs are designed to help students develop leadership, scholarship and career skills needed to succeed in today’s competitive college and career landscape.

Canfield Historical Society takes a step back in time By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Canfield Historical Society will present Canfield Memory Walk: A Step Back in Time Sept. 24 and Oct. 8. The living history Memory Walk will guide visitors through Canfield’s past, from early pioneer days to the present era. The one-hour guided walking tour will consist of a dozen sites at which Canfield business professionals and citizens will portray historical persons such as Jacob Barnes, Elisha Whittlesey, Civil War veterans, German immigrants and more. “We will have many different characters from Canfield history stationed at the sites. For example, we will have a 1920s car dealer, a 1960s race car driver, a Civil War veteran, a linotype operator at the newspaper shop and a 1970s musician. We are going to have characters from all different eras, not just the old history of the 20s and 40s,” said Suzie McCabe, Canfield Historical Society president.

The last stop on the Memory Walk will be a reenactment of the 1921 bank robbery. “For the last stop, we are going to reenact the 1921 bank robbery. We will have the robbers running out of the bank in their pin stripe suits with the money and the tellers will be running after them. The robbers will jump into their ‘old fashioned’ car and speed away,” McCabe said. McCabe said the Mahoning Dispatch was an invaluable resource when researching the robbery. “The Mahoning Dispatch was an invaluable resource for us. We used the article about the bank robbery that ran in the Dispatch to piece together the reenactment. All that we know about the robbery came from the Dispatch. We also found an article about the 1930s fire and we will have news boys on the corner at the green handing out ‘newspapers’ highlighting the fire,” McCabe said.

Boys wrestlers win state titles A nt hony D’A lesio, Nick Crawford and Payton Kostelic all won OAC Ohio Jr High School Wrestling state titles in 2016 at the Covelli Center in March. All three have also earned a spot on the NHSCA All American Team as well. A nt hony D’A lesio, Nick Crawford, Tyler Stein and David Rhineheart all qualified for the the 2016 USA WrestlingOhio National Team for Grecco and Freestyle Wrestling. The boys had to win or place in multiple high level wrestling tournaments throughout the state and country to achieve

this honor. They also had the opportunity to wrestle for different teams from Ohio and other states throughout the year. The boys had to compete in tournaments that placed them in high school brackets, even though D’Alesio and Crawford were middle school wrestlers at that time. The Nat iona l Wrest ling Championships took place at the University of North Dakota in Fargo, from July 15-23. Prior to the National Championship, the wrestlers had to attend a very intense camp from July 10-14 at St. Edwards in Cleveland along with all the

other qualified wrestlers from the USA Ohio team. There were multiple coaches from the Team USA, as well as different Ohio college coaches there to prep and train the boys to get ready for the intense competition they were going to face in Fargo. Each state had a USA team represented in Fargo, so they were going to compete against some of the best wrestlers in the country. The tournament was broadcast on Flo Wrestling, which added to the intensity of the w rest ling as people from across the country were able to watch the matches.
